For as long as I can remember, I have appreciated all types of music from pop to classical. If it is pleasing to the ear, I enjoy listening. It was nearly three summers ago, I attended a local festival in a town just east of where I live. As I walked down one of the streets, I heard the most beautiful music waifing through the air as if it were calling me and me alone. I followed that sound until I came upon a booth where a young man was playing a wooden flute. I stood there mesmerized as I listened to him play and was afraid that if I walked away, I would never hear such beauty again. The man was selling his CD's but I had no money and had to leave that day empty handed but the joy of his song was planted in my heart.

The months that followed, were filled with memories of standing near that booth at the festival wishing I had been able to purchase one of those CD's and hoping that next year, I would again run across this booth so that I could once again share in this delightful and awe inspiring joy. My dream was realized and this time, I had a litle money with me and I purchased 3 of his CD's that day. I brought them home and listened to them day and night. I was captivated and addicted. I had to have more. Later that year, at Christmas time, I attended our Gift and Hobby Show. Again, I heard that wonderfully, beautiful sound and I followed it. I met and talked with a man from Peru. In front of him, stood 3 gorgeous, hand crafted flutes. One, I am sure was made from red cedar. I asked who made his flute and he said he did. This is when I knew that somehow, I would have to learn to play the Native American Flute. This way, I would always have a way to play the songs that were within me that wanted to be shared.

I searched the Internet looking for all the sites I could find on the Native American Flute (NAF) and flute makers. I purchased a High Spirits Flute in the Key of Mid G. I also came across a group on the Internet for people interested in the NAF, The Montana Flute Circle, and joined. It was here that I learned we have a local flute circle right here in Indianapolis and was invited by several members to join them. The Indiana Flute Circle consists of several very talented and knowledgable people from all walks of life that enjoy making, collecting, and playing this wondrous instrument.

I had been playing my flute in the Key of Mid G when I decided that I would like another flute in a lower Key. I posted to the Montana Flute Circle about my desire to purchase another flute and a very nice lady offered to make one for me. I mentioned to the members of the Indiana Flute Circle that this lady had offered and a couple of eyes shot up immediately when I mentioned her name. I was asked by Gary if I was aware that Geri LittleJohn was one of the "elite" and that I could not go wrong by going with her.

Geri and I worked for a few months on making a flute that would be mine in every way possible. Let me tell you, everyone that had nothing but praise for Geri's skill was correct. I now have a beautiful hand-made, hand-tuned flute made from spalted beech in the Key of F (the key of the heart). My library now consists of over 20 CD's of various artists, including R. Carlos Nakai. I still wish to purchase many CD's from the people I have met at the Indiana Flute Circle and on the Montana Flute Circle mailing list; one of these being John DeBoer. I am still a novice but you can usually catch me on the front porch or in the back yard playing my heart away. I even played to the Atlantic Ocean off Myrtle Beach, this past April (06).
