Study Your Bible
A skit for GMA
by Mrs. Edna Patrick
Props: Pictures of two Bibles about 3’X 4’ held in front of each girl. One new Bible and one old Bible.
NEW- Hello, I’m Jane’s Bible. To whom do you belong?
OLD- Hi, there! I belong to Betty, the cute little redhead. She only left me on the table for a few minutes so we’ll have to talk fast. Are you new around here? I don’t recall having seen you? To whom did you say you belonged?
NEW- I belong to Jane. She’s the one with the big mouth and the red dress. I’m not really new here, I just don’t get around too much, especially to GMA. Say, have you been sick? You look like you might have had yellow jaundice or something.
OLD- Oh, no, nothing like that! I guess I do look a fright. My cover is all tattered and torn and many of my verses are underlined and there’s scribbled notes all through me. But, this makes me real happy, for this is a good sign that Betty and I are real close. We are not often far apart.
NEW- Well, I must say, that I look much nicer than you do. My cover is still a smooth, handsome black and my pages are nice and crisp with no markings. Jane takes real good care of me. I’m not allowed to hang around hospitals and places like those Gideons! Oh, I go to church each Sunday and sometimes used when the preacher gives his text. It’s not often that I get to go out on Wednesday night, but when we get home, I’m put on a shelf where everyone can see me. That’s how I can stay looking so nice. I look just as good as when Jane got me six years ago.
OLD- Don’t you get lonely just sitting there?
NEW- Well, yes, I must admit, I do. Somehow, I just never seem to get through to Jane when she reads me. But, it’s like Marie’s Bible said to me last Sunday (We were left on the bench all day), “You just can’t force your human to read you. She has to want to, or it won’t work.” Does Betty read you very often?
OLD- Oh, my, yes! This is how I know she loves me. Every night before she goes to sleep, she reads at least one chapter. And there’s all the reading for Sunday School and BTS and GMA. Does Jane belong to the GMA group?
NEW- Yes, she joined about two years ago. For a while, she really studied in the books of Romans, John and Galatians. But, the new wore off and she quit studying. Her counselor kept nagging until she finally finished the Maiden Step. Now, she’s supposed to be working on Lady-in-Waiting Step, but, she’s quit trying, for she says that Matthew 5: 1-16 is too hard to learn.
OLD- That is quite a long scripture, but not all that hard. Man, I’ve really had it with all this step work. Betty takes it seriously and really works at it. She is now working on her Imperial Queen Step. She keeps me on the table by her bed and is always picking me up to check and see if she is right when she is repeating scripture. She actually loves me, I believe.
NEW- Oh, If Jane could only understand what she is missing! She thinks it’s silly to memorize all that scripture. She feels she knows all she needs to know about the Bible-you know- all those stories in Sunday School and such? But don’t get me wrong about Jane, she’s a great person, patriotic and loyal to her church--usually.
OLD- Oh, dear, this is sad for you! I’m glad Betty used me, for dust is terrible for my allergy. What we need to do is get Jane more interested in GMA’s and she’ll have to use you more often. Then, she will grow to love you. Maybe we should try to get acquainted with that Counselor’s Bible. I see her around all the time. She looks worse than I do, so keep your eyes open for her. We can reach the Counselor through her. Here comes Betty after me, so I must go. Don’t give up on Jane. Bye now and good reading to you. (exits)
New- Oh, me, I sometimes wonder if Jane is ashamed of me. It’s hard to tell with her, but, if she is ashamed of me, then she must be ashamed of God, because I contain His words. But, what can I do? I’m just Jane’s Bible.
