Here is who we are ...

 Communi ... What?

Communiqué (pronounced Ko-muna-kay / noun),
1. to communicate. 2. bulletin.

If you're having a hard time finding services or getting information, you have picked up the right paper. The CommuniQué is an information resource program. We will be telling you about some good opportunities available in our community.

The staff at The CommuniQué all know what living "Welfare Poor" in Spokane is like. "We've been there." We also know the struggles one can face once you have a job. We really care about the issues that affect us all, and together we can make a difference.

Whether you are working or on public assistance, poverty can cause isolation, hopelessness and shame. We are building a network with agencies and we will share what we learn about them with you. We want you to be successful in your journey to a better life.

The CommuniQué believes that it is necessary for low-income people to actively become part of the poverty solution. We can support, encourage and learn from each other.

We are here for the long haul ...
now let's get busy!

About the CommuniQué Co-founders

One of them is a native born Spokanite. A single parent who raised three children, was on welfare for about twenty years, and is now a full-time graphic designer at an area college.

The other comes to Spokane from Philadelphia, is also a single parent of three, and has been on and off welfare for eleven years. She is currently an AmeriCorps Vista Volunteer for an area organization, and hopes to find permanent work with a local non-profit organization. They are both graduates of Spokane Falls Community College and have AAS degrees in graphic design.

Their idea began in the late summer of 1997. As they talked about how hard it was to find out what help was available and the fact that they had to learn about networking to be successful, they decided they were going to figure out a way to help other low-income people. The idea of The CommuniQué was born.

They attribute their success to accessing local area agencies. They understand the importance that a good education, a strong support system, positive encouragement and better self-esteem can make while struggling from welfare to self-sufficiency. At the time of this printing they are donating their time, money and equipment to researching and producing The CommuniQué.
