Mission Objective ~ To place a man into earth orbit, observe his reactions to the space environment and safely return him to earth to a point where he could be readily found. The Mercury flight plan during the first orbit was to maintain optimum spacecraft attitude for radar tracking and communication checks.
Mission Highlights ~ Mission Successful. First American in orbit. Total time weightless 4 hours 48min 27sec. During the flight only two major problems were encountered: (1) a yaw attitude control jet apparently clogged at the end of the first orbit, forcing the astronaut to abandon the automatic control system for the manual-electrical fly-by-wire system; and (2) a faulty switch in the heat shield circuit indicated that the clamp holding the shield had been prematurely released ~ a signal later found to be false. During reentry, however, the retropack was not jettisoned but retained as a safety measure to hold the heat shield in place in the event it had loosened.

This poem/prayer was written in 1961-62 by Mary Trisel upon John Glenn's first flight into space.
Quote: By Mary Trisel, Tues. a.m. before take off. "A rendezvous with destiny way out in outer space."
It's what I heard Walter Cronkite say;
and I said a prayer that God would take John Glenn safely on his way.
If it were Gods' will that he should go to realms so far above.
Then God would shield and keep him with his infinite love.
And let him go where no man has gone and safely bring him back.
To let us know just what God has that our planet, earth might lack.
To make men happy and content with life and love below.
So good luck John Glenn; count down zero.
p.s. He did it!
A note: This beautiful tribute was written so long ago by a beautiful lady with a big heart and a Love for God that she just had to put it to verse. Mary Trisel, passed on to Gods' realm just too soon for all of us as her family who so loved this sweet soul, Mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and her family is still growing. I know I am honored to say Mary was my mother-in-law, but I feel she was more than that, she was my heart, my friend, my mother. I was welcomed into her family 40 years ago to her son Marty with whom I love more as the years pass. He carries her qualities, and that love for God and family still grows
to this day.
Just before her leaving us to go back home to our Father in Heaven, Mary, predicted John Glenn would go up one more time into space, she was right! But not in her time here with us. John Glenn did go up...it was on her birthday October 29th when he made his second trip. I was so sadden when I had heard that her one wish in life was to give this prayer to John Glenn to let him know God was watching over him. We could never locate his address to forward this to him, so I am sending her wish over the internet to share with the world, a world that she loved and all that God created. So Mom here is your wish...Count down zero!
p.s. She did it!
I know she is smiling now and laughing that beautiful way she did when she was with us here. We love you Mom, from your family 'The Mary Trisel family.' Thank you all for taking the time to read her prayer, I know she is finally getting her one wish fulfilled now. Love and Gods' Light to all of you.
