These are some of the old-fashioned remedies and cures which were passed down from generation to generation by folks on both my Dad's and Mom's sides of the family. They are not recommended for use. Please consult your physician. Do I need to say that? (:

For Whatever Ails Ya

  • An "asphidity" bag necklaced around a child will help prevent colds. (An "asphidity" bag is filled with specific herbs/spices which are unknown to me at this time. I do remember, however, that it carried a pungent odor!)

  • A teaspoon of castor oil will relieve tummy aches (sometimes just "offering" the castor oil will cure the problem.)

  • Camphorated oil rubbed onto a bruise will help prevent the bruise from developing into cancer.

  • Mixing together a bit of tobacco from a cigarette with a little saliva and rubbing the mixture into a wasp sting will draw out the stinger and ease the soreness.

  • Cigarette smoke blown into a sore ear will help ease the pain (the smoke needs to be sealed into the ear canal with a cotton ball.)

  • Rubbing olive oil onto a pregnant belly will prevent it from developing stretch marks. (I tried this and it worked for me -- of course, my OB-GYN laughed and teased me about my belly smelling like Italian dressing -- but, hey, no stretch marks!)
