These are some of the superstitions which were passed down from generation to generation by folks on both my Dad's and Mom's sides of the family. A lot of these came from Nanny (my Dad's Mom) who lived with Mom and Dad for ten years or so.

  • Never say "thank you" when a person gives you roses. (It causes the roses to wilt faster).
  • Never take out the garbage after the sun goes down.
  • Never sweep dirt out the door after the sun goes down.
  • Never have your picture taken while you are pregnant.
  • Never raise your arms above your head while you are pregnant.
  • Never let the baby see himself in the mirror before he's one year old.
  • Never keep a lock of a baby's first haircut.
  • Never turn around and go back to the house for a forgotten item when you are starting on a journey.
  • Never let a cat get close to a baby because the cat will smell the milk on the baby's breath...the cat will take the baby's breath away.
  • Never walk in the early-morning dew if you are menstruating. (It will bring you illness, and possibly death).
  • Never walk through a vegetable garden if you are menstruating. (Doing so will kill the vegetables).
  • Never clip your nails on Sunday.
  • Never change the sheets on your bed between the Christmas and New Year holidays.
  • Never begin projects on a Friday.
  • Never move a broom from an old residence to a new residence.
  • Never go out the front door and re-enter through the back door (or vice-versa).

  • If your left hand itches, you will get money soon.
  • If your right hand itches, you will spend money soon.
  • If the bottom of your foot itches, you will go someplace new.
  • If your ears are ringing, someone is talking about you.
  • If your nose itches, you will have company soon.
  • If you dream about snakes, you have an enemy.

"I'm from West Virginia, too. Mom and Grandmother use to tell us if you dream of a wedding a baby would be on the way to someone you love. If you dream of dirty water death of someone you know and love. If you dream of a birth, there is death lurking. That is all that comes to mind right now. I wish Grandmother was still around to ask. Carla Snead, Charleston, WV (Really Malden)."

"Never leave your purse on any table, it will cause bad luck for the remainder of the day. Kim Wheeler."
