"I really enjoyed seeing these pictures. I was born in War in 1948 and attended grammar school there. I also remember when Lake Berwind was created. I remember going on a school hike to see it. I haven't been back to War in almost 25 years. The last time I was there, I didn't see anyone that I knew and it had changed so much. I remembered it as being bigger, or perhaps that is the way I saw it as a child."

"I used to take my father up to Lake Berwind which I think was man made when we were living there in the 50's. My father had lost his eyes in a coal mine explosion at the Bartley coal mines where we use to live up Cow Holler. That's when we moved to War. War at that time was a big city to us after living in the hills for so long and the change did us good. Yes, the big attraction for my dad and I was to go to the Hole In The Wall and eat chili dogs. There was a drug store there on the right past Jones and Spry Grocery store and they had a long bench outside, and my father and I would go into the drug store and get a large fountain drink, go outside, sit on that bench and drink it, and I thought that was the coolest thing we did. I used to have to lead my father around because of his blindess and he used to stop at an old beer joint, I think was called Stuckys, Stokeys, I am not sure at this time, but that was a hang out for a lot of the miners. My sisters would hang out at the SWEET SHOP. That was the place for teenagers. Will write more later."
