Colleen Barlow Obituary

Margaret Colleen Barlow was born August 6, 1924, the first born child to Needham and Brunell Bashlor Barlow. Colleen was loved by all in her family. Her grandmother, Bessie Bashlor, just adored her, and she and her Aunt Janette, Brunell's youngest sister, grew up together. Janette says that they loved each other very much.

Colleen had a very good disposition, and she played well with others. Her health wasn't always the best, and she had problems with her kidneys. (She possibly had Bright's disease.) Her brother, N.A., tell about one time in her young life when she got hold of some matches and set a fire. There was some high brush that blazed up, and this caused quite a stir around the yard and house.

As Colleen grew she was only an average student in school, but she was quite popular with the young people. Her mother and
Grandmother Bessie saw that she was never without pretty dresses.

On the Monday before Colleen's death, Janette received a card from Colleen inviting her to a party, and she seemed so happy about the event. On Wednesday, May 28, 1941, Colleen and a few friends were at Oakwell on the St. Marys River when a tragic accident occurred. Colleen and her very best friend, Pauline Strickland, were drowned. Colleen had been staying at the Strickland home after the Barlow home was destroyed by fire.

Colleen is buried in the Barlow family plot at Lawnwood cemetery in Kingsland, Georgia.
