Session Start: Sat Jan 24 18:46:22 1998 *** Now talking in #webdesign < Channel is NOT moderated at this time> *** Ghatten has joined #webdesign Hello all... what's going on... Not much yet Tawanda...great job on the class URLs page...I put your info up at the Desk... Lesson 3 covers finding and using graphics on the web, & scanning images ... Is the PSP book a good one to get? And how long does it take to arrive once ordered I liked the book Ro. It was fairly easy to understand...and not expensive...I have heard that some folks did not like it and there is no requirement to get the book--I have a list of about 10 tutorials for PSP that will do fine and are free. can I ask about geo city Sure Trendar Do you have a listing of those tutorials somewhere Ghatten? How would I get your list Ghatten? I don't mind getting the book if I can get something out of it. I have PSP and am comfortable with it but just need to learn how to use it more fully. I will have it posted this week! Along with the recommendations from the "Mac testers" for graphics software Thanks Ghatten. I would be happy to include the list on my HTML resource page is that is acceptable. Sure How much does PSP cost? http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/8693/reference1.html... .....there are some PSP tutorials listed under Graphics Tutorial Library at my site also dddd- you can get it for 69.00 from jasc, inc. I just bought it yes and their is a nice manual with PSP that is nearly as good as the basic book! I heard it is $50 at Best Buy. url is http://www.jasc.com Let's see if the folks at the top of the list have questions... AnnieL do you have an HTML question for the Instructors? I have a Web Page address but couldn't upload my partial page... AnnieL where were you trying to upload and what happened? I got to GeoCities and all went ok until time to upload then a message came saying: wait I'll copy it Could not upload file "First Web Page.htm" - Filenames may only contain the characters 'a-z" "A-Z", '0-9' - _ and . and may not start with ' a' >> AnnieL << you have spaces in the title no spaces allowed The file name had spaces? you need to leave the spaces out of the file name >> AnnieL << you can use a - instead though I guess so though Zonie is right--what they were trying to says is no to use spaces....however On GeoCities if you want others to get to the page by going to the address You should name that page index.htm Here is a web page for a tutorial on how to upload to GeoCities..... http://www.geocities.com/members/zine/tutorial.html That way all the visitor needs to do is go to the address you have reserved in GeoCities...... Thanks Flamingo...you must have been reading my mind again...I was sifting around in bookmarks for that Did that help Annie? I hope so...if not let us know okay???? Let's see Nan was next? What can we help you with Nan? My question is on bordered backgrounds. How do you center your text on the page without it overlapping onto the border? And if I wanted to put links just on the border how can I do that? Well, I changed it. Now I'll go back and try again. Okay great Annie! That is a rather complicated question Nan...with several solutions. Sorry to make it hard.. S'okay --it's just that it is a bit detailed for description here. Is there a place where I could read about it to find out? Suggestion...if I may And none of the solutions is that perfect answer that we so love LOL >> Nan << one method is to use Tables This is a good spot to use View Source find a page that looks like what you want then study its source Nan -- I use borders all the time -- email me and I'll try to help you. Wendy@Vu.org Here is an URL with ONE of those ways...it's a tutorial or email Otter...sigh http://www.htmlgoodies.com/sideline.html Ok thanks everyone...I try your suggestions and I may be emailing you Otter!!!*S* Tables are covered in Lesson 3 so you might want to go over the next lesson and then explore some of the options (The tutorial, viewing the source code of pages with the background..emailing Otter LOL or emailing the class address for assistance! Thanks Ghatten!!! Borders are fun to use -- but most people have a lot of trouble aligning them properly Links to Tutorials, Cyber Schools, Web supplies, and more http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/8043/ Okay--Ro said something about a different book for PSP for $29.99 that included software... great tables tutorial there, very basic, and simple I think that this was the book Called "Creating Your Own Web Graphics with PSP" Actually, The book is on a CD and has the eight lessons that are used in VDU course. I believe that it is sold to anyone for $29.99. Those that took the course got the CD for $19.99 at the time I got it. VDU? or ZDU? okay then I am out of the loop on that one...got Hei, it worked! That's great! But now I have another question: >> z-Ro << what is the URL for VDU ? If you know how to order it please let us know and we will mention it in the postings at the Desk Some folks might find it helpful Annie okay? Ziff Davis University ok for a great set of tutorials on Tables, Forms, and Frames http://junior.apk.net/~jbarta/tutor/makapage/index.html for a great reference get the HTML Reference Library (The HTML Bible) . . Published by W3C the authority on HTML, w/color wizard FREE at http://www.hooked.net/~tails/html DMH: do you have only ONE tag? <DMH> lesson 2-create a new page <DMH> 2 /HEAD tags I see, I need to delete the /head before the body tag Remove the tag that comes after the tag After? Okay, I will try that - Thanks a lot DMH: delete the 2nd /HEAD Deleted second /head - page still shows as white background yes Flamingo speaks truth That worked - why did that line stop colors from working?? The closing /body tag is the next to last thing on the page Correct? DMH...yes DMV: yes I am having a little trouble understanding why I had to delete by level one (H1) heading to get the colors to show DMH--it was in the wrong place put it after the body colors DMH: You did NOT have to delete a H1...it was in the wrong place you should just move it to AFTER the tag Should it come before or after body tag?? DMH, the thing is that you don't put coding in between the tags. Let's have a quick review of the tag order for the four tags to make the page..... I think DMH is trying to use the H1 tag for title?? Yes When it saw a coding line (the

) your browser automatically assumed a tag Lesson says H1 tag set to set a heading on your page The problem occurred because DMH had accidentally written a tag *AFTER* the opening tag where the colors were specified This confused the browser and the colors did not show Once the extra closing tag for the HEAD element was deleted...no more confusion Is that a little more clear?? The text that you put between the and is the title that shows at the very top of your browser ... not on your web page... it is to be used for your bookmark/ favorites title... Nothing to do with your actual viewed web page. DMH:

GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS

Okay, I think I understand what happened now, thanks a lot for your help. DMH: <z-kittycat> DMH: lesson 2-create a new page <z-kittycat> DMH: DMH: DMH: Did Annie or Tawanda or TK have questions?? Ghatten since you are here...will you be able to post tonight's questions somewhere so we can read them Yeah. How do you add spaces to text? I can TRY to get them before we go Not a Question...But a few Points of Interest.....1) If anyone's interested, http://www.insight.com has Paint Shop Pro available for less than $39....... and found a cool Tutorial site at http://www.cwru.edu/help/introHTML/toc.html .....Also....I Believe the book you mentioned is available to read online @ http://www.mcp.com/........Thought maybe these would be of Interest   for spaces I will try to get something up but can't post logs Tawanda... You want a simple single space?? my whole household have gone to sleep already... I was asked not to post logs due to server space they eat up what time does class start? No. I usually want x number of spaces... here and there. Thanks Ghatten 10 EST >> Tawanda << 1 space is   Ghatten...how much space do logs take? Perhaps we can put up a separate page on another server? ---------type the entity for non-breaking spaces------ ------that's an ampersand, lower case letters nbsp and a semicolon THANK YOU! Then you can add one for each little space you need! :) Someone could post the logs for the class Thanks also, Ghatten! I was also worried about the spaces! OK now my question: I already use up more than my share of server space here LOL with Lessons etc. Ok AnnieL How come I put my nickname as AnnieL and they show me as "You said"? you are worth it Ghatten G: if its less than 5meg I'm sure I can find the logs a home It shows you that only!!! We see Annie L >> AnnieL << cause your still using the Java Applet instead of mIRC Annie...we see ....you see "you said" thetas just the way mIRC works Who: Duncan: It doesn't take up too much space to put the logs up.. I did it for the last class and it took about a half meg it just take time to edit the logs!!!! :( So...me or some eager student can post the logs if someone has them? Okay..sorry for all the tech troubles tonight! Yes Otter is correct .. it took me lots of time to edit the logs Any last questions?? Ghatten: our study group had a question about cascading what exactly is it and how does it work? also what is the code used for showing the html codes, so they show up on the screen? (granny-why is really Granny-Wicked) Ahhh okay First To *SHOW* HTML Tags on a webpage you need the special entities for those.... the < is < (that is ampersand, letters "L" and "T" and the semicolon the > is > (that is ampersand, the letters "G" and "T" and the semicolon) Ghatten: someone pointed out to me that enclosing coding lines in allows you to show the source code....but it does change the font So to show the tag on a page type in <HTML> is either deprecated or out dated <Granny-why> cool thanks ghatten, that will help me with my notebook <Granny-why> now to part one! <Granny-why> Ghatten: our study group had a question about cascading what exactly is it and how does it work? <Ghatten> Ok <Ghatten> Here it goes <flamingo> Just be very careful.. if using GeoCities... don't take that page into the editor or it will get rid of the coding needed to show the coding on your web page <Ghatten> Let's see if I can still make sense at this hour LOL <Who> same problem with FreeYellow and some others <Who> I have to recopy the whole source to change a single line* Otter2 agrees with flamingo -- GeoCities s steals codes!!!!:) <Ghatten> Cascading stylesheets refers to how the different types of style sheets "defer" to one another's authority <flamingo> I learned the hard way... :-( <Ghatten> First, you need to understand there are three types of styles <Ghatten> There are INLINE <Ghatten> These are the ones that we did an example of in the last lesson <Ghatten> And they are a lot like HTML tags and ATTRIBUTES <Ghatten> There are EMBEDDED <Ghatten> This type of style sheets is used at the top of a page <Ghatten> to set the *STYLE* for the page or a particular element for the page <Ghatten> For example--one could EMBED a style at the top <Ghatten> which would make all <H1>'s GREEN and centered!!! <Ghatten> The third type <Ghatten> is LINKED <Ghatten> This is a really cool kind <Ghatten> You can write ONE style sheet <Ghatten> with a large set of defined values <Ghatten> and LINK it over a series of pages <Ghatten> So that they all shared for example <Ghatten> A background color*** anna1 is now known as anna1brb <Ghatten> a font face <Ghatten> a <H1> color <Ghatten> etc. etc. etc. <Ghatten> So we have LINKED, EMBEDDED and INLINE styles*** z-Kayroller (Kayroller@172-21-28.ipt.aol.com) has left #webdesign <Ghatten> Before I get to the actual "explanation" does that all make sense?? <Granny-why> I understand the linked yes <z-Ro> yes...* Ghatten says great everyone is sleeping <Ghatten> ok <z-Dowie> somewhat <Greta> no <Blossom^> yes.......it makes sense to meeeee........ <Granny-why> does the html library reference give examples of this cascading? <Ghatten> I will be putting this in a future lesson <z-Dowie> Good! <Granny-why> with sample pictures? please :) <Ghatten> Now on to HOW the cascading works <Ghatten> Why they call it cascading is that the styles defer to each other <Ghatten> If for example I wrote a web page <z-Nan> I found a page that explains the cascading style sheets...not sure of the URL but I will find it and put on the discussion board if you want me to Ghatten <Blossom^> yes Granny the HTML Library does...... <Ghatten> and I had used a LINKED style sheet <Ghatten> to set several features of the pag <Ghatten> page <Ghatten> BUT I wanted to change ONE of those on this page ONLY <Ghatten> I could use an EMBEDDED style to "Override" the LINKED sheet <Ghatten> and then I could change the element throughout that page <Ghatten> If I wanted to go further <Ghatten> I could use and INLINE style <Ghatten> To override my EMBEDDED sheet <Ghatten> and change one occurrence of the item <Ghatten> So they sort of cascade downward <z-Dowie> Makes sense. <Granny-why> so there is an order to it also? <z-Jill> Good explanation! <Ghatten> LINK defers to EMBEDDED or to INLINE <Ghatten> EMBEDDED defers to INLINE <Granny-why> cool I think I will like this style, I just have to learn it lol <Ghatten> :) <z-Ro> I understand but to remember is yet another story! <Ghatten> Just be really careful <Ghatten> It is still very strangely supported by browsers <Granny-why> I hope that when you explain further, you will show examples <Ghatten> Yes <Granny-why> that helps me a lot <Granny-why> great thanks ghatten <z-Dowie> Me, too, Granny. Thanks, Ghatten. <Who> Isn't cascading 4.0? <Otter> isn't is fairly browser specific? <Ghatten> yes who..and it's SORT of browser specific at this time <Zonie> the HTML reference library has lots of info on CSS <Zonie> for a great reference get the HTML Reference Library (The HTML Bible) . .
