BOWDOIN FAMILY

The BOWDOIN Family History

The original spelling of Bowdoin was Baudoin and originated in France. Pierre Baudoin, a Hugeunot, fled France in 1683,going first to Ireland and then to Boston. Pierre and his wife, Elizabeth had four children, John, James, Mary and Elizabeth. The spelling was changed to Bowdoin around 1706, as evidenced by Pierre’s will in which he signed his name, Peter Bowdoin.

John Bowdoin, eldest son of Pierre ( Peter ), left Boston and migrated to Virginia. John Bowdoin’s name first occurs in the records on Northampton County, VA 28 October 1698. He was a maritime merchant as well engaged in the acquisition of farm lands and servants. John married Susannah ? and had 4 children, Peter, John, Jr. Susannah and Mary. The Bowdoins continued migrating south, living in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia.
