Fantasyland

Fantasyland is home to many of the Magic Kingdom's most famous rides. A lot of rides come straight from classic Disney animated movies, and who can forget the song from It's a Small World? The gateway to this magical wonderland is Cinderella Castle, a preview of what's in store for guests.

Trivia:
The Fantasyland at Disneyland in California was closed on opening day due to a gas leak.

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh --- One Hunny of a ride!A Fastpass Attraction This new children's ride that opened in June '99 is probably the most protested Disney ride ever. The uproar is over the fact that, sadly, it replaced one of WDW's few remaining original rides, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. This ride was a favorite among many guests. In the new ride, after boarding Hunny Pot vehicles in front of the building, guests will move through several scenes that show Pooh and his friend's many adventures (hence the title...duh...) before finally ending up at a large party with all of the Pooh characters. The ride, following a tradition started with Pirates of the Carribean, will unload in the gift shop. (Aren't you just thrilled?)

Trivia:
Winnie the Pooh is based on the A.A. Milne series of Pooh books.
The newest Pooh movie is Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin which takes up where the original Pooh movie, with the same name as the ride, left off.

Cinderella Castle
This may very well be the most photographed building in the entire world. Standing at over 185 feet tall, this fairytale castle is the theme building of the Magic Kingdom, and the symbol of Walt Disney World. Many different architectural styles were used in the designing of the castle, including medieval fortresses and Renaissance chateaus. Out in front is the castle forecourt stage where many of the park's musical productions are put on. The foyer of the castle has several murals depicting the story of Cinderella, which in French means "Little Cinder Girl". They were made using tiny pieces of imported Italian glass in over 500 colors, and took two years to complete. Inside, there are specialized shops, selling anything from pens with Disney characters on them to real swords, and a restaurant, Cinderella's Royal Table. In the restaurant, the Disney family coat of arms is displayed over a fireplace, consisting of 3 red lions on a field of white.

Trivia:
There is a very popular rumor that says that the unfinished office of the late Walt Disney is contained up inside the castle walls. Supposedly, he wanted a place where he could look out at all of the happy guests enjoying his park. When he died in 1966, five years before the grand opening of WDW, construction was halted and the beginnings of the suite were left, untouched to this very day.
There is also a rumor that the castle can be quickly disassembled in case of a hurricane or some other large-scale disaster. This is definitely not true. The delicate looking castle was built to withstand hurricane speed winds.
Once upon a time, Fantasyland had an attraction that used the moats around the castle. Guests would board large swan boats to take a relaxing journey around the fantastic palace. There are even reports that the area where guests loaded is still visible...

It's A Small World
The most famous of all Disney rides!

Not to mention the one with the most contagious tune ever....but I'm not complaining! Presented in the 1964 World's Fair along with Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress, this is "The Happiest Cruise That Ever Sailed". Oh, and that song you hear on board? You'll be humming that for years to come. No, really. When you step on this boat, you will travel around the world and see Audio-Animatronic children and animals of all nationalities from 6 continents that dance and sing this attraction's theme song, "It's a Small World After All".

Trivia:
There are 257 Audio-Animatronic Children in the ride.
The ride system used in this ride was the first of it's kind. You board a flat-bottom boat that moves slowly through a canal of water. This was different in that it was quiet and more reliable than other ride system of the time.
The Sherman brothers, who wrote the songs for Mary Poppins, Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress, and many other Disney movies and attractions, were called upon to write the famous tune.

Cinderella's Golden Carrousel
Straight through the arched tunnel of Cinderella Castle, guests find an ornately fashioned antique carousel, complete with an organ tooting fairground-style Disney music. In addition to providing ambiance to the area, the carousel makes a great setting for the Sword in the Stone show, where Merlin finds some lucky kid to free the blade from its' rock prison.
Fireworks Viewing Tip:
Behind the carousel is one of the best spots to see Magic Kingdom's nighttime fireworks display, Fantasy in the Sky.

Trivia:
When Disney obtained this beauty built in 1917, it was refurbished and 18 scenes from Cinderella were hand painted on the canopy above the horses and riders.

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride Although this now extinct ride had become unpopular in it's last few years, there was a large outcry when Disney made the announcement that it was going to replace it with The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. There were even several protests outside of the ride, headed by the webmaster of www.savetoad.com, called "Toad-ins". The ride was based on the 1949 Disney film, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. Guests boarded early automobiles and traveled through Toad Hall and the roads of England. They crashed through fireplaces & chicken coops, were nearly smashed by falling suits of armor, were arrested and then escaped from jail right into a speeding train. They ended up in...well, let's just say Antarctica it ain't.

Trivia:
There were actually two seperate tracks that loaded and unloaded at the same place at the front of the building.
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad was based on the children's classic, The Wind in the Willows.
The demons in the final scene were created especially for the ride. They did not appear in the Disney film.

Mad Tea Party This is a dizzy, spinning ride reminiscent of a scrambler at the county fair. It comes straight from Alice in Wonderland's tea party scene where the Mad Hatter sings "A Very Merry Unbirthday to You". In the ride, you board a teacup that seats several people. Using a grip in the center, you can spin your cup. A large platform spins all the cups one way, while smaller ones spin smaller groups the other way.

Trivia:
While on the ride, look at the huge teapot in the center (If you can without getting whiplash!). Who's that popping out of the top? It's the sleepy mouse from the movie!

Dumbo the Flying Elephant
In this attraction, would-be pilots climb into one of 16 flying elephants from the movie Dumbo. Each elephant is controlled by it's occupant who can make it go up or down. This is a favorite ride among many children.

Trivia:
When Dumbo the Flying Elephant was refurbished in 1993, the number of elephants was changed from 10 to 16, and the center piece was changed from a simple decorated cylinder topped by a mirrored ball with Timothy Mouse on top, to a lavish European style center with a hot-air balloon topping it. The only feature kept the same was little Tim on top.
Walt Disney never rode this attraction. He was a solid democrat, and thought that if he was photgraphed in a flying elephant, the mascot of the republican party, the media might distort the situation.

Legend of the Lion King This live show combines lifelike puppets, clips, and spectacular sets to recreate the story of The Lion King. Voice talents include Johnathan Taylor Thomas as young Simba, and Whoopi Goldberg & Cheech Marin as laughing hyenas. With all the songs (by Tim Rice and Elton John) and characters from the movie, and a special preshow from the film, this performance comes to life in the Fantasyland Theatre, which housed such memorable shows as Magic Journeys.

Trivia:
The puppets in the show, called Humanimals (Human-controlled Animals) take up to four people to operate.
Special environmental effects are brought to life, just like in Voyage of the Little Mermaid, Honey I Shrunk the Audience, and It's Tough To Be a Bug . Hot desert winds, cool evenings, rain, mist, and stampedes are created in the theater.

Peter Pan's FlightA Fastpass Attraction In this original attraction, guests are able to fly with Peter, Wendy, and the whole gang from Peter Pan over the rooftops of London. After passing the second star to the right and straight on 'till morning, they reach Neverland. There they encounter magical mermaid lagoons, indian camps, and get face-to-face with the meanest pirate of them all, Captain Hook. Guests board and dismount the flying ships, which are suspended from an overhead rail, in front of the ride, just like in many of the other Fantasyland rides.

Trivia:
The theme song of Peter Pan's Flight is, "You Can Fly, You Can Fly, You Can Fly", which was written for the animated film. The writers of the song both have the first name of Sammy. (Aren't you glad you know that?)

Snow White's Adventures This ride is based in Walt Disney's first ever movie and the world's first animated feature, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Formerly known as Snow White's Scary Adventures, this ride used to contain mostly scenes of the wicked queen and the frightening old witch. This left the folks at Disney in a dilemma: What age group are we appealing to? It was too terrifying for small children and too childish for older ones. So, Disney decided to take it down about 10 notches. They added many more pleasant scenes with Snow White and the Prince, along with new Audio-Animatronic Dwarfs. Even so, the few witch scenes can frighten youngsters, so it's up to the parents to decide. Guests board one of the seven dwarf's beds, with the name of the dwarf carved in the front, just like in the animated classic.

Trivia:
In every animated Disney film, when the hero is fighting the evil villian, what is always happening?

It is raining.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
This cruise to the depths of the ocean was based on the Disney film of the same name. These submarines took guests down below to gaze at mermaids, sunken treasure, and a giant squid. The 24 subs used in all of the Disney parks gave Disney the fifth largest submarine fleet in the world. The ones used in WDW were made in a Tampa shipyard, and then carted to Orlando to be used in this now lost ride. This ride lasted many years before finally being scrapped to make room for a new attraction, which doesn't seem to have come yet. The northernmost tip has been refurbished, with an exhibit called Ariel's Grotto where kids can meet The Little Mermaid and adults can cool off in spashing jets of water. On the southern shore is another exhibit named the Fantasyland Character Festival where guests can meet their favorite Disney characters. But for the most part, the lake is still, a solemn reminder of what used to be.

Trivia:
There is a story that is floating around that says that Disney is planning another E-Ticket attraction for the Magic Kingdom. The supposed site will either be in Adventureland or over the dead 20,000 Leagues. If it's true, it will probably be a thriller, judging from the rest of Disney's newest creations...
