"New Dawn" is an excellent climber for large spaces. It has many
strengths and few weaknesses. First, an interesting piece of
history about 'New Dawn': in 1930, The Plant Patent Act was passed,
giving breeders or discoverers of a new plant variety the right to control
its propagation and distribution for seventeen years; after the seventeen
year period, everyone has the right to produce and distribute the plant
freely. 'New Dawn,' introduced in 1930, holds the first plant patent
ever granted.
Bloom color is a creamy pink, fading to white during hot summer
days.
Foliage
is medium green and healthy with repeat blooms. "New Dawn" has excellent
disease resistance. "New Dawn" tolerates poor soil, partial shade,
and it is both heat and cold tolerant. "New Dawn" is a 'large' climber,
it will cover large spaces, so prepare for that when you plant.
"New Dawn" is a popular garden plant on the strength of its behavior
and appearance. Glittering, bright green foliage sets off daintily pointed
buds which spiral open into semi-double flowers of silky blush pink. The
petals are arranged loosely in a high-centered bloom that calls to mind
a small Hybrid Tea. The flowers are held in small, loose clusters and reappear
regularly throughout the growing season. They carry a soft and attractive
fruity scent. Though reputedly impervious to disease, New Dawn can suffer
from powdery mildew. The fungus can disfigure buds and foliage, but rarely
does long-term damage to the plants. "New Dawn" will climb rapidly to 12
or 15 feet. |
