St. Patrick
St. Patrick, who’s real name is said to be Maewyn Succat, was born in Britain. He was captured and spent part of his teen years as a slave in Ireland. Upon escaping from his master, he fled back to Britain, and placed himself under the guidance of a bishop. He was promoted to priesthood. He remained in Britain for 18 years, by often his thoughts turned to his encounters and experiences in Ireland. Shortly before his death, Pope Celestine entrusted Patrick with the mission of bringing Christianity to Ireland, and bestowed on him many relics and other spiritual gifts. It was at this time he was given the name "Patercius" or "Patritius”, which is derived from two Latin words pater civium meaning the father of his people. Patrick was able to easily spread the word of Christianity, because of his knowledge of the Celtic language. St. Patrick died in Ireland on the 17 March, 460 A.D. This is why we celebrate St. Patrick's Day on the seventeenth of March. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland.

The Shamrock
One traditional icon of the day is the shamrock. And this stems from an Irish tale that tells how Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Trinity. He used it in his sermons to represent how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit could all exist as separate elements of the same entity. His followers adopted the custom of wearing a shamrock on his feast day.
