In 1990, Beyond acted in various movies and in "Happy Ghost IV", they held important acting roles, acting as 4 pupils in a college possessed by a evil ghost in the comedy. And in 1991, the popularity of Beyond was at one of its peak when they acted in the movie, "Beyond's Diary". The movie described the situation in Hong Kong facing 1997 and they had to strive out a promising future in this cruel and realistic world, but they always stick to their beliefs and finally crave out a world of their own.
Also in 1991, Beyond went to Africa to seek new music inspiration and they set up a "Beyond's third world foundation" to donate money to the needy in Africa. Since the trip to Africa, Beyond's music had become even better and they had even decide to venture into the Japanese music industry which will act as a stepping stone into the international music scene. It's first Japanese album, "This is Love" has attained platinium in Japan and had gain recognition throughout Japan. Slowly, Beyond has attained their own style in their music which was different from others.
In their "Continue to revolt" album, Beyond had invited Kitaro(a famous New Age musician) to perform with them. Thus subsequent Beyond's songs were blended with New Age music which brings them out against other bands.
However in 1993, a tragic accident caused the death of lead vocal and songwriter, Wong Ka Kui. He slipped from a stage 3 metres away from ground during a rehearsal for a show in Japan. He was sent to the hospital immediately. Wong Ka Kui was in coma for 5 days before he died in 30 June 1993. His death had created a commotion in Asia music scene, and soon his body was sent back to Hong Kong for the funeral. Wong Ka Kui was buried in Hong Kong together with his favourite guitar. Thousands of fans visited his grave and everybody believe that although he had died but his love and devotion for music will never die. Soon after his death, people were pondering over the question if Beyond will disband as Wong Ka Kui was the main songwriter. However, Beyond did not disband as the other 3 members were also capable of writing good music. And after a year, Beyond released their new album, "Second Floor, Back Block". The songs in the album were mostly written in memory of the late Wong Ka Kui and it had also show that Beyond had always stick to their beliefs.
In June 1995, Beyond had released another new album, "Sound". The second album after Ka Kui's death. There had been a lot of controversy over the music of Beyond in this album. But I personally feel that in this album Beyond had matured over the years and their music is getting more and more Beyond. Keep up the good work Beyond.
In Febuary 1996, Beyond released a new album, "Beyond's Exciting". 5 new tracks for the concert in Hong Kong. This started a concert tour for Beyond to Malaysia, Singapore and some other countries. The Beyond Live and Basic concert was a success in Hong Kong. Media had give praises for Beyond's performance and regarded their concert performance as stunning and of international standards. They had regarded Beyond as the Hong Kong music industry's spokeperson.
Well, for now everybody is awaiting for Beyond's latest album to come out. It's been rumoured to be out by November 1996 but there's still no news about it. Recent rumours had said that it will be out in Jan 1997 for the mandarin album and Febuary or March for the cantonese album.
