The Secret of Monkey Island

Part One : The Three Trials


After the intro head down to the Scumm Bar where you will find the pirate leaders in the back room. Ask the pirate leaders about becoming a pirate. They will tell you about the three trials : Mastering the sword , thievery and treasure hunting.

You will notice a room to the right of the pirate leaders. Try and go in. You will be told to get out. Now go over by the curtain without going into the other screen and wait until the cook comes out of the room. When he comes out start making your way towards the room but don't go in until he is out of  the screen.

Inside you will pick-up the meat on the table, the pot under the table and the fish outside. To get the fish outside walk to the end of the plank and the bird will be pushed up he will fly away and land back at the fish again. The more time you walk to the end of the plank the longer the bird takes to land again. After two or three shuffles the bird gives you enough time to pick up the fish.

Now exit the bar and head left towards the map screen. Here go to the clearing. Go into the tent to find the acrobats arguing about who should go in the cannon. Interrupt them and say you'll do it. You will be paid 478 pieces of eight. When they ask you for a helmet say that you have one and give the pot to them. Now do the trick and you get the money.

Once you have the money head back to the village and go to the shop. There you will get the sword which is on top of a chest next to the counter and the spade which is upstairs in the corner. Pick-up both these items and bring them to the storekeeper or else ring in the bell. Pay for both the items then ask the shopkeeper about fighting the swordmaster. He will say that he will go and ask her if she will fight you. To find the swordmaster you must follow him to her house.

Now after finding the swordmaster go back to the map screen and go to the dot at the bottom-right. If this is your first time going in that direction you will be stopped at a bridge. Give the monster the fish and continue on to the dot. When you reach the house knock on the door and a man will come out. Ask him to train you to be better than the swordmaster. He will say that you could never be as good as the swordmaster but if you argue with him by saying that you could he will train you. Try and remember the insults he uses against you and what insult answers it back.

After you have been trained you should head somewhere where a lot of pirates pass without actually going to a landmark. As pirates bump into you challenge them to sword fights. THE IDEA OF THE SWORD FIGHTS IS TO REMEMBER THE INSULTS AND WHAT INSULT YOUR MEANT TO USE TO COMBAT ANOTHER. The swordmaster uses different insults but they are answered by the same insults as the others. Try and get as many insults and answers off the pirates as possible. If you have an insult that you don't have an answer to ask that to a pirate and hope that he gives you the answer to it. You will know if it is right or wrong because if it is wrong you will advance towards the pirates side of the screen and if it is right the pirate will advance towards your side of the screen.

After you have gotten the T-shirt from the swordmaster go to the village again. You might have noticed the man with the parrot on his shoulder before while going to the shop. Talk to this man and buy the treasure map off him. Now go to the map screen again and go to the fork. Look at the map. They are dancing steps but follow them anyway and they lead you to the treasure. Dig up the treasure with the spade. (Pick up one of the flowers along the way as you will need them later on.)

After getting another T-shirt go back to town. (If you want you can go and tell the pirate leaders that you have completed two of the tasks.) Go through the arch next to the prison. Now go towards the mansion , you will be stopped outside by deadly dogs. Use the flower that you got in the forest with the meat that you got in the bar and give it to the dogs. They will fall asleep and you can go into the mansion. Open the press door next to the front door and go in. An automatic section will then take over. When you finally get out go to the prison and talk to the prisoner. You will not talk to him until you get him some breath mints from the shop. During the conversation after giving him the breath  ask him if he has a file. He will say that all he has is a carrot cake but will swap it for something to get rid of the rats. Give him the gopher repellent and he will give you the carrot cake. Look at the carrot cake and you will find that it contains a file.

Go back to the Governor's Mansion and go to the gaping hole where the picture used hang. Go in the hole and another automatic sequence takes place. After the sequence you find yourself stuck under water. All you have to do is to pick up the idol.

When you get out of the water you will find that the governor has been kidnapped. You must get a ship from Stan's Ships. Go to the shipyard and pick out the cheapest boat and ask about credit. He will tell you to ask the shopkeeper about a credit note. Go to the shop and ask about the credit notes. The shopkeeper will get you one out of his safe. REMEMBER HOW THE SHOPKEEPER OPENED THE SAFE. He will ask you about your job and whatever job you say he will just turn you down. If you didn't get the sequence of how he opened the safe you have a second chance when he is putting it back in. If you now know the sequence ask the shopkeeper to ask the swordmaster for a fight again, When he goes open the safe and get the credit note.

Now go back to Stan's and look at the cheapest boat again. Ask about extras and go through each of them saying that you don't want them. Now offer him 5000 pieces of eight. He will turn you down and then you say that you don't want it. After you start walking away he calls you back. Go back to him and offer him 5000 pieces of eight again and this time he will accept it !!!!!!

Now you have to get your crew ! Go to the swordmaster's house and tell her that the governor has been kidnapped and she agrees to come. Then go to the landmark in the top-right and use the chicken with a pulley to cross the cable. (You get the chicken at the voodoo place in town. It is the first small door on the right on the street where you bought the treasure map. The chicken is on the table.) Go into the house and talk to the man inside tell him the news and he will ask you to touch his parrot. Touch the parrot and he will agree to come with you.

The final member of your crew is the prisoner. You have to free him from his cell by melting the lock with grog. Go to the bar and pick-up the mugs on the table. Then go into the kitchen and fill a mug with grog for the barrel. As you walk up the street with it , it melts the cups so by the time you are at the shop you will have to use one of the other cups with the melted one before it is too late. When you get to the prison use the cup of grog on the cell lock. You will melt the lock and free the prisoner.
Now you have all of your crew so head down to the dock which is the screen where you were underwater. When you get to the screen you will meet Stan. The rest is automatic.


Part Two : The Journey


When you get on the ship you find your crew will not do anything but sunbathe. Don't mind this as it doesn't matter. You'll find yourself in your cabin , pick-up the feather-pen and ink then open the drawer to find a log-book.

Exit the cabin and go up the ladder by the mast of the boat and pick-up the scull and crossbones flag. Now climb down the ladder and go down the hatch. Go down the other hatch below that again. Now you are at the bottom of the boat. Pick-up the rope , the wine in the chest next to the rope and the gunpowder in the barrel on the left side of the screen.

Now go back to the middle section of the boat and go into the other cabin. ( Not on the deck.) It seems to be a kitchen. Open the press beside the hatch and pick-up a box of cereal. Open the box of cereal to find a key.

Go back to the cabin on the deck and open the cupboard in the corner with the key. Inside you will find a box. Open this and pick up the cooking recipe. Look at the cooking recipe. Here are the ingredients in simpler form :    1 x  Cinnamon Stick , 4 x  Breath Mints , 1 x Scull and Crossbones flag , 1 x Ink , 2 x Wine , 1 x Chicken with Pulley , 1 x Cereal , 1 x Gunpowder.

After mixing all of these ingredients into the pot you should get an explosion. When you wake up and go to the deck you will see Monkey Island in front of you. Now you must use the rope on the cannon to act as a fuse , then you must go down to the bottom floor and get some more gunpowder and use it with the cannon nozzle. Then you must go down to the kitchen and get a pot from the shelve to use as a helmet. You must also burn one Stan's business cards to use to light the fuse.

Now go to the deck and use flaming mass on fuse , then use pot and you should automatically be fired onto Monkey Island.


Part Three : Under Monkey Island


When you recover from you daze go to the map screen.; Go to the top-left of the screen , you will then be shown another map screen and go to the landmark named "Fort."  Pick up the spyglass and the rope and then push the cannon. Then Hermit Toothroot will come in , when you have finished talking to him pick-up the cannon-ball and the gunpowder. Then go back to the map screen.   

Go to the right , you will then be given another map screen. Go to the river fork. When the screen you will see a note with a rock holding it down. Pick-up both of these. If you look at the rock you will see that it is flint. Use the gunpowder with the dam. Then use the flint with the cannon ball and the dam will explode and fill the river with water.

Go back to the map screen and go to the pond which is at the end of the river. At the pond you see a dead man. At this point Herman usually turns up. After you finish talking pick up the rope around the dead man's arm.

Now go to the crack on the map down by the beech where you were at first. Use one of the ropes on the branch and then climb down to the next level and use the other rope on the tree stump. Now climb down to the bottom and pick up the oars.

Now go to the beach and use the oars with the boat. You can now row around the island. Row up to the right and go past the next beech and stop at the one after that. Now after you get out of the boat you will be on a beech , exit the beech to get to the map screen.

Go to the village on the map screen. When at the village walk as far to the left as you can until you see the bowl of fruit. Pick-up the bananas from the bowl of fruit and try to leave. The cannibals will lock you up in their guest room. To escape all you have to do is to lift up the loose floorboard and go through it.

Now after escaping go whatever way you want to get to the fork. At the fork climb up the footholds to get up the cliff. There you will find a catapult like machine. Pull it until the end without the rock is pointing directly straight at you. Now go up the footholds again. There you will find at stone at the edge of the cliff. Push the stone over the cliff and you will see the stone flying off and hopefully hitting the banana tree on the beach. If you didn't hit the banana tree change the angle on the catapult and go back up to the top again. You will notice a pile of stones to the right , pick-up one of the stones , you will automatically bring it over to the edge. Now push it again , if you miss again , try , try again.

Now that you have five bananas go to the monkey who can be found down by the first beech.  Give the 5 bananas to him. He will now follow you as you will need him to do something for you.

Now go by land up to the top-right where you will find a beech and a clearing. Go to the clearing and continue going right until you can go no further, you will be stopped by a wooden fence. What you must do is pull the nose on the totem pole. A hole in the fence will appear but when you let the nose go the fence will go back to normal. So after you let the nose go the monkey jumps up and swings off it so you can get through.

When you get a close up view of the giant monkey head you will notice a small idol in front of you. Pick this up and go back to the cannibal village.


When you get to the cannibal village you may walk to the front of the hut but when you try to leave the village you will be confronted by the cannibals. Say "Don't eat me I'm a mighty pirate" and they say that they will spare you if you give them something in return. Give them the idol and they take you as a friend. They then go off to offer the idol to the giant monkey head and they leave the hut open. Go in and take the banana picker. As you go to leave you will see Herman. Give him the banana picker and he will give you the key to the monkey head.

Go to the monkey head and open it with the key. (You have to very sad not being able to open the monkey head on your own but I'll tell you anyway.) Use the monkey head key (cotton bud) with the monkey head's ear. The mouth opens and a stairs comes out. Go in quickly and take a look but come back out then because you won't be able to find your way.

Now go back  to the cannibals and ask about Le Chuck and about the root. After hearing about them say your off to find Le Chuck , they will stop you saying that you won't be able to find him without the navigator. However much you beg  you won't get it so they just end the conversation and start muttering to themselves. Interrupt them and give them the pamphlet given to you by Stan on navigating. They will now give you the head.

Go to the monkey head now and use the head. He will direct you through the catacombs.

When you get to Le Chuck's ship don't go in yet. Ask the navigator for a lend of his necklace. If you beg he will eventually give it to you. Use it. Now go onto Le Chuck's ship.

Head left into a cabin. There you will see Le Chuck standing by the window and you will also see a key hanging on the wall. GO NO NEARER TO THE KEY THAN A BIT IN FROM THE END OF THE BED. Now use the magnetic compass on the key and it should fly over to you.

Now exit the cabin and go down the hatch. Pass through the room with the bunks in it and continue on to the next room. There pick-up the chicken and you will get a feather. Go back to the last room and use the feather on the sailor's feet when his feet are stuck out and the drink is hanging down.(You might have to use the feather a few times.)

Now go back again to the room with the chickens and open the hatch with the key. When you go down the hatch use the drink on the rat's bowl. The rat should get drunk and pass out. Now continue on and pick-up the grease.

Go back to the deck and use the grease on the squeaky door. Now open the door and pick up the ghost tools. Go back to the room with the chickens again and use the tools on the crate. You should now get the root from the crate by looking at the crate when it is open.

Go to exit the catacombs and there will be an automatic sequence which brings you to the village and back again.

When you come back with the spray, you will find the ship gone with only one pirate left. Just talk for a while and sooner or later someone comes along and you go to Melee Island.

Part Four : Guybrush Kicks Butt


When you arrive head for the church using the spay on ghosts on the way. When you get to the church you will be confronted by a surprise.(I won't spoil it for you.)

After the church incident Le Chuck will start punching you all over the island but when you get to Stan's get ready. You will fall into the grog machine and stuff will fall out onto the ground. You will notice a green bottle , when Le Chuck pulls you out of the machine use the green bottle on Le Chuck.
