"Tonight, on Homicide: Life on the Street..."
From red-balls to dunkers, the Baltimore Police Department Homicide Unit battles the endless wave of murders in the Charm City, each Friday at 9 p.m. on NBC. Whether confronting the murder of an Iowa tourist near the new Camden Yards ballpark or the grisly, haunting murder of an eleven year-old girl on her way home from the library, the detectives begin their canvassing of the neighborhood once again. In the end, after an interrogation in the Box, perhaps a confession will be teased out by a skilled detective. The satisfaction comes when a red name turns to black on the board.
The unit's best pair of detectives, Bayliss and Pembleton, suffered a setback this year when the overstressed Pembleton collapsed from a stroke and slipped into a coma. The future remains uncertain over whether he can emerge from the coma unscathed. Along with his wife and weeks-old daughter, a partner who needs him and the Homicide department would be unable to withstand his loss.
Based on the book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets by David Simon, the show premiered in 1993. Producer Barry Levinson hoped to set a show in his native Baltimore. Tracing the arrival of Det. Tim Bayliss from the mayor's detail, he plunged viewers into the Adena Watson case that remains unsolved to this day. After Croscetti's suicide and Felton's and Bolander's suspensions, Det. Mike Kellerman arrived to fill the post of 'new guy' that Bayliss had carried for four years.
