All the Little Animals (Lions Gate 1999)
synopsis
(drama) Based on the book by Walker Hamilton (just try to find this rarity!), this is one of Christian's overlooked gems thanks to poor distribution and a bizarre R rating in the US. A grown-up's fairy tale, ALL THE LITTLE ANIMALS follows the story of a simple young man, Bobby, who runs away from an evil stepfather (Daniel Benzali) who is trying to take over the family business. Bobby is slightly brain-damaged because of a car accident years ago. He runs away to the English countryside where he meets a strange hermit, Mr. Summers (John Hurt). Mr. Summers soon teaches Bobby about the life and death of animals. But Bobby's past soon catches up with him!
update
Available on video, ALL THE LITTLE ANIMALS was directed by Oscar-winner, Jeremy Thomas (THE LAST EMPEROR). It is a sweet and touching drama filmed on the beautiful Isle of Man in the UK. This is a must-see movie with a strong animal rights message. Baleheads will be fascinated - especially given that it was shot just a year before Christian buffed up for AMERICAN PSYCHO. What a performance and what a range!
