Liked the Movie? Read the Book!
These books are the source material on which Christian's films were made. Additionally, we've listed related books as well as books which Christian would like to see turned into a film! All excellent reading!
New titles added Sept 14, 1999.

Metroland
Julian Barnes, the renowned British writer, has created an intriguing tale of 2 best friends who grow up from their high school years to university and then to their 30s. Along the way, one friend remains single, idealistic, and political. The other friend has his first sexual fling in Paris but returns to England to become married with children, living in "Metroland", a suburbia for businessmen. Often bittersweet (especially for those of us in our late 20s and early 30s!), Metroland is a telling story about choices we make in life. Grownups only! This book has a lot of love scenes and will prepare Baleheads for the movie to come!
Order the great 1970s soundtrack here! (Sample sound files too!)
Other books by Barnes: Flaubert's Parrot, The Porcupine and the acclaimed Talking it Over.
Shooting to Kill
Shooting to Kill: How an Independent Producer Blasts Through the Barriers to Make Movies That Matter is the acclaimed new book by indie film producer, Christine Vachon. She produced VELVET GOLDMINE as well as Mary Harron's (AMERICAN PSYCHO) first feature, I SHOT ANDY WARHOL. Aside from being a great insider's view on making indie films, there are a number of anecdotes about Christian! A must read for movie buffs/Baleheads!
American Psycho
American Psycho is a disturbing tale about a Manhattan Wall Street yuppie who becomes soulless and consequently, a serial murderer. From the author of LESS THAN ZERO, Brett Easton Ellis has said that he'd like to see Christian Bale play the lead character, Patrick Bateman. You've all heard about the controversy. Check out the reader reviews at the Amazon site. Better yet, read the book and see what all the uproar's about!
Dan Eldon Documentary
The Journey Is the Destination : The Journals of Dan Eldon is the collection of writings from Reuters photographer, Dan Eldon. At the age of 22, he was murdered by an angry mob in Somalia while on assignment. Christian is the voice of Dan Eldon, reading the journals in the upcoming TBS documentary.
Velvet Goldmine
The story is set in the 1970s glam-glitter rock scene where the likes of David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed set the trends of music, fashion and of course, the sex & drugs & rock n roll. "Velvet Goldmine" itself is a David Bowie song. More titles on the way. Did you know that the producer of the film, Velvet Goldmine, is noneother than REM's Michael Stipe?
Check out these books:
The Bowie Companion, by Elizabeth Thompson. Transformer: The Lou Reed Story by Victor Bockis which was written from interviews with Reed in the 70s.
Anastasia: The Mystery of Anna
Based in part on:
Anastasia: The Riddle of Anna Anderson, by Peter Gurth. A touching story about a young woman who claimed to be the surviving Tsarina after the Russian Royal Family was supposed to have been executed during the Russian Revolution. Very gripping reading about a mystery woman whose identity could only be verified years later by DNA tests. Christian was of course, the Crown Prince, Alexei.
Check out also
Nicholas and Alexandra
by Robert Massie - another wonderful story (and movie) about this tragic Royal family and
Anastasia: The Lost Princess
by James Blair Lovell for another angle about one of the greatest mysteries of the 20th century.
For pictures of the real Alexei, there's this pricey but beautiful collection of actual photos:
The Lost World of Nicholas and Alexandra, text also by Peter Gurth. Very sad to look at, knowing their fate.
Empire of the Sun
One of the best science fiction writers in the world, J.G. Ballard experimented with a unsentimental look at his own childhood during WWII China in a Japanese concentration camp. The result? The superb book
Empire of the Sun. You can order the . Check out EOTS's fascinating sequel,
The Kindness of Women and other Ballard titles such as
The Best Short Stories of J.G. Ballard,

Lost World
OK, we're starting to make connections like the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game! :)
Lost World , as if you didn't know, is the sequel to JURASSIC PARK - a Spielberg film, so that's why it's on Christian's Book list!

Prince of Jutland and Henry V
Based on the original Danish history on which Shakespeare based Hamlet. Check out
Hamlet, of course, and the original tale of Prince Amled of Jutland called
Saxo Grammaticus and the Life of Hamlet. And if you're in the mood for Shakespeare, don't forget Christian as the touching English lad in
Henry V. And... since Shakespeare's the thing, have a read of
Romeo & Juliet as Christian was originally up for the role of Mercutio in the DiCaprio/Danes version!
Pocahontas
The true tale of an American legend,
Pocahontas, a la Disney is a wonderful version of the true story of the first contact between two peoples. Loved the film? Check out this book,
The Art of Pocahontas or the wonderful
soundtrack.
Two other books about Pocahontas recommended by West Coast Balehead, JackG,
THE SERPENT NEVER SLEEPS, is interesting for being told from the viewpoint of a young English girl who emigrates to Jamestown in 1609, getting to know Princess Pocahontas; and
THE LEGEND OF POCAHONTAS which is the legend of her whole life from
her girlhood to the state visit to England and her death. Did you know

Joseph Conrad's book,
The Secret Agent, happens to be the fave book of the Unabomber! Yikes! Having said that, Conrad is incomparable for dark imagery. Check out the classic,
Heart of Darkness on which Coppola based Apocalypse Now.

Ethan Hawke
Coming in August on cheaper paperback, but you can order it now!! Not really Christian-related, (well, unless you noticed both have co-starred with Winona Ryder, both sort of look alike (Laurie in LW with his goatee?), both are over 6' tall, both worked with Frank Whaley and Robert Sean Leonard, hmmm....) but so many people have been asking me (and/or Christian) if he/I have read Hawke's book. Nope, but here's the paperback, The Hottest State.
George Lucas
Christian's fave movie and the best novelization. Star Wars! Christian's childhood dream? To be a stormtrooper!
