synopsis
(WW2 drama) During the Second World War, when Italian invaders occupy a small Greek island, the dashing and eccentric Italian Captain Corelli (Nicolas Cage) falls in love with the local doctor's daughter, Pelagia (Penelope Cruz). But Pelagia is engaged to a handsome fisherman, Mandras (Bale), who goes to the mainland to fight the Nazis and the Italians. The film also features John Hurt and Irene Pappas. Based on the book by Louis des Bernieres.

Rumour has it that director John Madden wanted the release date changed - and he's won! The release date in the US is now August 2001 though we still have May 4th for the UK. Prospects make CORELLI look like an Oscar contender thanks to the classy novel and the weight of its director, John Madden, who last wowed audiences with SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE.
