Equilibrium (Dimension Films - 2001)

synopsis
(sci-fi drama) Like 1984 and Farenheit 451, EQUILIBRIUM is set in a fascist future where basic human rights have been severely curtailed. In this case, human feeling - judged to be the root of human suffering - has been strictly forbidden. The hero of the story, John Preston, is one of the top enforcers of this oppressive regime - but when a beautiful sense offender asks him why he is alive during an interrogation, Preston finds himself unable to get the haunting question out of his mind and ultimately finds his existance and philosophy shaken down to its very core. Secretly, he begins collecting small, highly illegal nostalgic artifacts, and for the first time in his life, he covertly feels. Thus, in the course of the story, he goes from a man who has never felt anything at all, to feeling everything that can be felt by a human being. Inspired by this newfound understand, Preston determines to turn against the oppressive dictatorship and free the world of its fascist masters.

news/update
Name change from LIBRIUM to EQUILIBRIUM to distinguish the title from an actual drug called Librium.

After a few false starts where even Leonardo DiCaprio was attached to this project, LIBRIUM is set to film in Germany this fall. Also stars Emily Watson, who co-starred with Christian in METROLAND, and Taye Diggs.
