Metroland (Lions Gate 1999)
synopsis
(drama) Based on the book by Julian Barnes, METROLAND follows two best friends - from teen years to young adulthood to early 30's. Each young man has taken a different route in life. While Toni has remained single and rebellious, Chris (Bale) is now married with a child and a Volvo! When the two friends meet again in their 30's, Chris reminisces about his past and wonders whether he made the right choices in life.
update
A touching, sexy and funny drama about growing up and making choices in life, METROLAND ranks as one of Christian's best films. It's the kind of drama that makes people think afterwards about their own life and their own choices. Also stars Emily Watson (soon to reunite with Christian in LIBRIUM). A must-see on video - also suffered from poor distribution, Christian's acting is tremendous here as he subtly changes from a teenager to university student to married man. It's all too easy for someone to throw on 'age make-up' and play a 90 year old. How do you handle the subtle differences in attitude and posture for a range of just 15 years? Very popular on the film festival circuit, I designed the METROLAND poster and artwork!
