Swing Kids (Hollywood Pictures - 1993)
synopsis
(WW2 drama) Set just before the beginning of WW2, SWING KIDS follows the break-up of close friends - German teenagers who love American big band/swing music but are torn apart as their country goes Nazi and prepares for war. Starring Robert Sean Leonard and Christian, SWING KIDS also featured a strong cast which included: Kenneth Branagh, Barbara Hershey and Noah Wyle!
update
Video and Laser disc discontinued though available on auction sometimes! The two films which activated the bulk of activism of Christian's fans are NEWSIES and SWING KIDS. Long considered great flicks by the fans who discovered these titles on video, SWING KIDS and especially NEWSIES, have encouraged fans to ban together to support their personally discovered gem. SWING KIDS suffered from a lack of nerve - just before release, Kenneth Branagh asked that his name be removed from the credits as he didn't want to take away any attention from the younger cast. But in Hollywood, having your name pulled from the credits usually means that the actor thought the movie was going to be a dud. So SWING KIDS was dropped as a minor release. With great big band sound and choreography, SWING KIDS looks and feels great - a CABARET Lite. Unfortunately, the ending of the film doesn't hold up to the great dramatic build-up. Christian is great as a good guy turned bad - Thomas Berger gets indoctrinated by the Nazis and the Hitler Youth and he is soon up against his former best friends.
