RANDOM NOTES ABOUT THE SHAREWARE VERSION OF QUAKE:
I have played several of these Doom-like adventure games: My
reviews of them all are as follows:
DOOM - The easiest. I beat it in about two hours without
cheating.
CASTLE WOLFENSTEIN - A little harder.
HERETIC - Considerably harder.
QUAKE - Not exactly a piece of cake, but I beat the hardest
level in about four hours without cheating. The action is
a little more detailed than other games, but the lighting
is so dim it's hard to make out what's happening most of
the time.
DUKE NUKEM 3D - The HARDEST! The animation is kind of
cartoonish, but the mazes are really tough - I got stuck in
the Toxic Dump and had to cheat from there on in. As for
the final level... YIKES!
But back to QUAKE...

KEYBOARD COMMANDS:
SPACE BAR - Allows you to jump. Also helps set you upright
if you get disoriented while swimming.
SHIFT key - Allows you to run. SHIFT and SPACE BAR
together allow you to leap across a chasm.
CTRL - Fires your weapon.
A key - Aims your weapon upward.
Z key - Aims your weapon downward.
Left/Right Arrow keys - change the direction you are
facing.
Up/Down Arrow keys - Walk you forward or backward.
ESC key - Calls up the LOAD/SAVE/OPTIONS menu.
` key - Pulls up the command line for entering cheat codes.
THE WEAPONS:
THE AXE - Only useful at very close range and whenever you
have no other weapons handy. Surprisingly effective,
though!
THE SHOTGUN - Fires a single shell at a time. Effective at
any range against all monsters except CHTHON.
THE DOUBLE-BARRELED SHOTGUN - Fires two shells at a time.
Does more damage, but uses up ammo faster. Effective at
any range against all monsters except CHTHON.
THE NAIL GUN - Fires one nail at a time. Effective against
all monsters except CHTHON.
THE SUPER NAIL GUN - Fires two nails at a time. Does more
damage, but uses up ammo faster. Effective at any range
against all monsters except CHTHON, and the recommended
weapon for dealing with Shamblers.
THE GRENADE LAUNCHER - Tosses grenades in a slow arc. The
grenade will explode immediately on contact with a monster,
but will take a few seconds to detonate if it hits the
ground first. NOT TO BE USED AT CLOSE RANGE, because it
will kill you, too. Effective against all monsters except
Shamblers and CHTHON.
THE ROCKET LAUNCHER - Fires grenades much more forcefully
in a straight line. The grenade will explode immediately
on contact with ANYTHING. NOT TO BE USED AT CLOSE RANGE,
because it will kill you, too. Also, do not fire at the
floor or at walls, because the force of the explosion may
backfire and injure you. Effective against all monsters
except Shamblers and CHTHON.

THE TOOLS/AMMUNITION/HEALTH:
HEALTH comes in three sizes: 15 points, 25 points and 100
points. The 15-point health boxes are marked with a
glowing red cross. The 25-point health boxes are marked
with a red cross and a green square. You cannot carry more
than 100 points of health at one time, unless you pick up
one of the 100-point boxes, which are bigger and cube-
shaped. Any health past 100 points is temporary and will
subtracted at about one point per second.
AMMUNITION also comes in various sizes: i.e., some NAIL
CASES contain 20 nails, some contain 40.
THE ARMOR - Makes you temporarily less vulnerable to
attack.
THE QUAD DAMAGE - Temporarily increases the destructive
power of your weapons.
THE BIOSUIT - Allows you to swim in otherwise deadly
waters.
THE KEYS - Allow you to open locked doors (DUH!)
*****
THE MONSTERS:
GRUNTS: Human soldiers armed with shotguns. If you kill
one, he will drop his ammo pack which contains five shotgun
shells (unless you blow him up completely, in which case
the ammo pack will also be destroyed.) Vulnerable to all
weaponry, but shotgun shells are recommended.
DOGS: Mean dobermans. Main method of attack: biting.
Vulnerable to all weapons, but shotgun shells are
recommended.
KNIGHTS: Humans in armor. Main method of attack: slashing
with swords. They're kind of awkward, but move quickly and
are dangerous if you let them get too close. Vulnerable to
all weaponry, but shotgun shells are recommended.
ZOMBIES: Walking skeletons. They're very slow, but they can
hurt you from a distance by throwing chunks of what appears to
be rotting flesh at you. Although shotgun shells will disable
them temporarily, it takes a grenade to kill them for good.
SCRAGS: Flying cocoon thingies. Main method of attack:
shooting a weird yellow ray. Most vulnerable to shotgun
shells and nailguns, although grenades will also kill them
if you're a good enough shot.
OGRES: Monsters armed with chainsaws and grenades. If you
kill one, he will drop his ammo pack which contains two
grenades (unless you blow him up completely, in which case
the ammo pack will also be destroyed.) Ogres are
particularly stupid, and will throw their grenades at
random, including in empty rooms and at other monsters.
This can either kill the other monsters or incite them to
fight amongst themselves. (It's really neat to see a
Shambler getting irritated with an Ogre!) Vulnerable to
all weaponry, but shotgun shells are recommended.
FIENDS: Brown, hairy monsters with bloody fur. Main method
of attack: ferocious slashing. They can leap great
distances and run very fast. Most vulnerable to grenades,
although shotgun shells and nailguns are recommended at
short-range.
SHAMBLERS: Big, white abominable snowguys with bloody fur.
Main methods of attack: slashing and throwing lightning
bolts. Most vulnerable to nailguns and shotgun shells, and
you can throw them off balance by running towards them and
backing away repeatedly as you fire. Grenades can also
kill them, but only after quite a few hits.
CHTHON - The Lava Monster. BIG. NASTY. Likes to throw
chunks of hot lava. Invulnerable to ALL weaponry. Can
ONLY be killed with the electrodes.
A thought occurs to me: CHTHON is either very stupid or his
architect doesn't like him very much. Here's a monster that
can't be killed by conventional weapons. But the method of his
destruction is BUILT INTO THE ROOM WHERE HE LIVES! Who built
this weapon? Why did CHTHON allow it to be built that way? And
if the person who built the room wanted CHTHON dead, why not
just kill him and be done with it?
CHEATS:
Press your ` key to call up the command line, then enter one or
more of the following:
GOD - Places you in GOD mode. You will be invulnerable to
attack and can survive ANYTHING, including falling in hot
lava. This command has to be given every time you enter a
new level.
IMPULSE 9 - Gives you everything you can carry, including
all the weapons, all the ammo, all the health, all the
keys. It will even give you the Lightning Gun, which I
don't think you can get otherwise no matter what you do.
IMPULSE 255 - Activates QUAD DAMAGE. This wears off after
about a minute.
FLY - Allows you to levitate. However, I found I could not
control where I flew TO, so in my opinion, this command is
useless.
NOCLIP - Allows you to walk through walls.
NOTARGET - Makes you invisible to the monsters. They won't
attack you unless you attack them first.
GIVE followed by a number gives you a weapon (2 is the
shotgun, 3 is the double-barreled shotgun, etc.)
GIVE S followed by a number gives you that many shotgun
shells.
GIVE R followed by a number gives you that many rockets
(grenades).
GIVE N followed by a number gives you that many nails.
GIVE H followed by a number gives you that much health.
GIVE C followed by a number gives you that many energy
cells for the lightning gun.
REGISTERED 1 - Disables the messages that nag you to
register the game. This command does NOT allow you to play
the extra levels included in the registered version.
OBSERVATIONS:
Any time you have plenty of health and weaponry, save your
game.
If you make a major advance and your health and weaponry
are in good supply, save your game.
Do NOT save your game if your health or weaponry are
running low.
Don't just automatically grab health or ammunition if you
don't really need them. It's better to leave them behind
in case you run short later.
If you see something glowing on the wall, shoot at it. It
may be the key to a secret door.
If you see a gray gelatinous doorway, check and see if it
can be entered from more than one direction. In at least
one location (in GLOOM KEEP) going in the front way
deposits you in one place, going in the back way deposits
you in another.
If you hear a mysterious little "boop boop" sound, shoot at
the wall. There may be a secret door nearby.
For whatever it's worth... if there's an ordinary musical
CD loaded in your CD-ROM drive, Quake will play random
selections from it as you advance through the game. I
found this annoying, but hey, maybe you'll like it... :-)
