Q1. What comics are you currently working on? And which is your favourite (if you have one)?
Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E., JSA, Beast Boy and I just finished up Day of
Judgment. There are also a few short stories here and there and another
mini-series that hopefully will get the greenlight soon!
I enjoy working on all the books, but Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. holds a special
place in my heart.
Q2. Do you have time to read comics, yourself? If so, which ones do you read?
I make time. I love comics. I recommend Superboy, Starman, Robin, Nightwing, Hourman, The Titans and from that other company Thunderbolts and the Avengers.
Q3. Which issue of JSA is the first one you're working on, and what storyline does it deal with?
Issue 6. The JSA officially announce their return, as does Captain Marvel's nemesis Black Adam! We then lead into the Obsidian story-line, the return of the Injustice Society, a run-in with Kobra and the hunt for Extant.
Q4. Who is/are your favourite JSAer(s), and why?
Out of the old guard: Hourman and Dr. Mid-Nite (I always wondered why there
were never Silver Age counterparts and I think that's part of the appeal.)
And Flash and Green Lantern -- but Hawkman and Hawkgirl are the greatest
icons of the original super-team.
Of the new guys: Star Spangled Kid, of course, Hawkgirl and Atom-Smasher.
The Kid because she's on the greatest team ever created, surrounded by the
best heroes the world has to offer and she doesn't even know it. . .yet.
Hawkgirl because of her forced entry into her heroic role. She's a character
that we've only seen a hint of who she really is. We've barely scratched the
surface.
Atom-Smasher is the soul of the team. He grew up wanting nothing more than
to be on the JSA. Not thatTerrific and I look forward to working with J.J.
Thunder.
Q5. It's been indicated that the team will expand over the coming months to possibly include Dr Fate, Dr Midnite, Mr Terrific, and maybe even a new Hawkman. But what about members leaving? Any possibility there?
Nothing's confirmed on who is going to stay and who is going to go. We already know the line-up, the changes, etc. but we're not going to reveal it. You'll have to wait and see.
Q6. The new Dr Fate. Without giving anything away (which I'm sure you won't) are you, as a fan, excited about his identity and parentage? Do you think fans will be mostly satisfied, or are we looking at another Hal Jordan/Kyle Rayner-type debate?
I think the new Dr. Fate was a stroke of genius from Goyer and Robinson. His identity is going to shake up things a bit and give us a lot to work with.
Q7. What do you think of Alan Scott having the name Sentinel, instead of Green Lantern? Are there any plans to change things back to the way they were?
"Change things back to the way they were?"? No way. It's about moving forward without ignoring the past, building on it. I know there are some fans that think things should go back to the "original" way -- small example being Sentinel -- but things need to evolve -- that's what the JSA is all about. Legacy. Without new blood, legacies can't exist.
Q8. From what I hear, not all fans have taken to the new Hourman. With Rick Tyler coming back on the scene in Hourman #9 (if I'm correct), are there any chances of Hourman III being replaced?
No plans yet.
Q9. After seeing the profiles in Secret Files, some fans voiced their dislike of the new Dr Midnite's costume, as well as the T shadow on Mr Terrific's face. Will there be any changes made in the near future?
Dr. Mid-nite's costume will look more like the one from the mini-series combined with the old one. Mr. Terrific's mask stays. We like it! And it has a purpose. . .
Q10. Will there be any important costume changes for any of the current JSA members?
Expect Sand to evolve soon. Other than that, I think we're very happy with the costumes of the new JSA guys.
Q11. Apart from the ongoing series, will there be any other JSA comics coming out in the next year or so? i.e. one-shots, specials of mini-series.
There is some talk, but nothing definite.
Q12. What hints can you give us as to future JSA storylines? i.e. what's happening in upcoming issues? Any clues?
See my answer above.
Q13. For Stars and STRIPE, future previews have indicated that Young Justice, and the Marvel family will be making future appearances. What about the JSA? Will they be appearing anytime soon, and what can you tell us about it?
The JSA will swing by in #8 when the Kid and S.T.R.I.P.E. take on the Nebula Man. We'll also see the origin of S.T.R.I.P.E.
Q14. What's coming up in Stars and STRIPE over the next year or so?
Pat Dugan's son moves in, giving Courtney a step-brother to deal with. The threat "beneath" Blue Valley will explode as the Shining Knight returns. And soon after, someone that Courtney misses very much will show up.
Q15. What do you like most about writing Stars and STRIPE? And what inspired you want to create a 90s version of the Star-Spangled Kid, and not another former JSAer?
I wanted to see a young teen female that had to learn how to uphold a legacy that would be her own. I also liked the patriotic angle and I love the Seven Soldiers of Victory. History, fun and a teen hero with an adult sidekick. What else do you need?
Q16. In Stars and STRIPE, will we be seeing any more 'Flashback' stories, as we did in that excellent #0? The way you combined the modern day, with the past, was very well done, I must admit......
Thanks. Yes, issue #9 will be a Seven Soldiers of Victory story -- where we follow Pat Dugan from the 40's to the 90's. We also have a TWIST on the Times Past stories coming up early in the second year.
Q17. In Secret Files, in the JSA timeline, it mentioned that Fury I was the first female JSA member - is this something that will eventually be followed up on in the comic?
Sure will. Look for something in the second year of JSA.
Q18. What do you think of the whole Hippolyta/Fury/Miss America debate? i.e over who was the first female, who was retconned in, etc?
Let's just stick with Wonder Woman. Everyone seems to like her. But we'll see how it works out.
Q19. It's been said that Power Girl and the Ray will be appearing in JSA later on in the run - is this correct? And are they both possible candidates for membership?
POSSIBLE appearances by the Ray and Power Girl. We have ideas, it's just a matter of when we can get to them. As for memberships, we'll already have plenty of members.
Q20. What did you think of Infinity Inc? Any plans to revive it, or any other teams from the past? e.g. Seven Soldiers, Freedom Fighters.
Infinity Inc. had some good stuff, things we'll draw from. As for the Seven Soldiers of Victory and the Freedom Fighters. Plans are brewing.
Q21. Will any former JSAers or Infinitors be appearing in JSA, in the future, as guests, or even future members? Any details?
Sort of in issue #11.
Q22. Some fans (at the DC Boards) have claimed that Charles McNider (Dr Midnite) could've been homosexual. They're also claiming the same thing for Kendra (the new Hawkgirl). What's your opinion on either situation?
The jury's still out on Dr. Midnite. He could've been. We probably won't ever know. For the record, Kendra's heterosexual. NOT that there's anything wrong with that! :)
Q23. Will you be working on any other projects in the near/distant future?
Hopefully another mini-series soon and there's a one-shot for an upcoming SKIP WEEK I'm DYING to do. We'll see if that pans out.
Q24. How much involvement will the JSA have in Day of Judgment? And what did you enjoy most about writing the DOJ series?
The JSA will appear, but Sentinel plays a big role. My favorite thing about DOJ was writing Green Lantern and being able to work with a lot of my favorite obscure DCU heroes.
Q25. Finally, and MOST importantly, will Extant pay for what he did?
Heh. What do YOU think?
