Geoff Johns interview

28th November, 2001

This interview is exclusive to JSA Returns!

Q1. Firstly, what does the near future hold for Geoff Johns? Your writing chores have been increased, but will this affect any comics that you currently write?

GJ: David is returning to JSA, co-writing the book with me -- that helps a lot. Otherwise, Flash and Hawkman continue as planned.

Q2. About the return of Johnny Thunder (JSA #29): how long have you had this planned, and can you tell us anything about what the future holds for him?

Awhile. That's all I'll say.

Q3. The available information on "Stealing Thunder" has whet a lot of JSA appetites, especially regarding the "all-new, all-different" JSA, featuring Sand, Icicle, Hourman, Crimson Avenger, and more. How did you and David go about choosing these 'new' members? Were they characters you've particularly wanted on JSA, or just some that were left over from past choices?

Characters we both liked and wanted to work with.

Q4. As for the other character's joining, will you be focusing on the 'legacy rule' in making these decisions, or will it be more along the lines of the characters chosen for JSA: Our Worlds At War, i.e. characters with Golden-Age connections, moreso than JSA?

That rule is to be determined.

Q5. What are the chances of any of the "all-new, all-different" JSAers staying with the team afterwards? Any plans for such?

Possibly, again you'll have to wait and see how the characters turn out.

Q6. In a past interview, mention was made of a JSAer leaving, and another joining. Will this occur before "Stealing Thunder"? Any hints about these characters?

One will quit and one will join in #31.

Q7. With the upcoming return of the Ultra-Humanite, is there a chance of seeing more Golden-Age JSA Villains making appearances? Or do you feel you have enough to work with in the modern day?

Possibly. We've been discussing both old and new.

Q8. Onto Hawkman, what month will his ongoing series debut, and what do you have planned at this early stage?

It's out in March, and really issue #1 sets it up for the first arc -- which is thru #4. It takes place in St. Roch, India and elsewhere. The focus will be on Hawkman and Hawkgirl.

Q9. Will Kendra be a constant part of the Hawkman comic, or just a semi-recurring character? Will their relationship issues be dealt with much, in "Hawkman"?

It really could be called Hawkman and Hawkgirl. She's in it almost as much as Carter.

Q10. Is the Green Arrow team-up still planned? Would this actually crossover into the Green Arrow monthly?

Green Arrow will appear in #5 and #6.

Q11. Are there plans for any other JSA-related ongoing series in the near future, either from the Golden Age, or featuring modern-day JSAers? What about mini-series?

No plans.

Q12. Will the Mr Terrific / Dr Mid-Nite "fan favourite" combination appear much together in upcoming work? Any further plans for a mini-series, or a stand-alone issue, focusing on these two, great characters?

They will continue to be a presence in JSA, but no plans for a mini.

====================================================

Q13. Regarding your Flash work, what can you tell us about the upcoming "Crossfire" storyline? Roughly how many Rogues will the Flash be dealing with, and over which issues will this be covered?

Quite a few Rogues. We have the new group (plus another new member who joins in 183). The prologue is in #183, and Crossfire is #184-188.

Q14. Any plans to feature JSA-related characters in Flash, or vice versa? Star-Spangled Kid? Jay Garrick? The Thinker?

The Thinker, yes. Big plans for him. Jay will appear in future issues. No other plans for JSA members.

Q15. It has to be asked: what's your favourite comic to write, out of JSA, Flash and Hawkman?

They're all a lot of fun -- on any given day one is my favorite. But character-wise, I have to admit Flash is my favorite character, followed by Captain Cold.

Many thanks to Geoff Johns for once again taking part in an interview for "JSA Returns!". Although Geoff couldn't provide any information on his upcoming Avengers run (due to start with #56), this website will still keep the fans up-to-date with Geoff's 'doings'. So best of luck with your soon-to-be four monthly comics, Geoff!.
