James Robinson and David Goyer were the guests for America Online's JSA Chats for March 25, 1999.
SPOILERS: Information that spoils current or upcoming issues is found toward the end of this report. There's no spoiler space to separate such info from the more general comments.

David Goyer's favorite classic JSAers are Hourman and Wildcat. His comics influences include James, Alan Moore, and Grant Morrison. He reads JLA, BIRDS OF PREY, and books published by Drawn & Quarterly. Chuck Dixon is currently his favorite DC writer. James' current reads include JLA, LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMAN, DAREDEVIL, NIGHTWING, BIRDS OF PREY, AVENGERS FOREVER, and THREE GEEKS.
David will probably attend Comicon International at San Diego, maybe in support of New Line Cinemas and the movie BLADE 2 (the script for which he's almost finished, at the time of this writing).
STARMAN #55 will feature a 5-page solo effort by David. James and David collaborate on JSA until #5, then it's just David.
Mike Mignola probably won't be doing more work for STARMAN.
James and David have a 10-page story in the upcoming JSA 80-PAGE GIANT.
As far as James knows, the only upcoming JSA action figure will be of Jack Knight.
David would like to see a teamup between the JSA and Marvel's Invaders, but doesn't think he and James would write it.
No plans for the Freedom Fighters.
Captain Marvel was never considered for membership in the new JSA.
Vandal Savage won't show up soon, as he's been overused recently. There aren't any plans for Psycho-Pirate, the Ultra-Humanite, Per Degaton, or the Wizard, either.
Right from the start of the project, David wanted to have Stalker as the main villain of THE JSA RETURNS. No other similarly obscure character was considered.
It was DC's idea to revive the old titles for the JSA one-shots. James thinks that MORE FUN wasn't reused because DC considered it too goofy, though he doesn't agree.
It is true that foxes were sprayed with phosphorescent paint to frighten Japanese soldiers, as seen in SENSATIONAL. David had interviewed a member of the OSS who told him that story verbatim. Historical research like this is what James and David strived for, to make the books more fun.
The King, seen in STAR-SPANGLED, is an obscure Golden Age hero who might appear in the second year of JSA.
The original Atom, Dr. Mid-Nite, and Hourman will stay dead, though James and David dislike the way those heroes' deaths were handled in ZERO HOUR.
James and David dislike Peter David's Old Justice, which features some Golden Age sidekicks, soon to guest star in YOUNG JUSTICE.
David has an idea for Liberty Belle, but there are so many characters that these ideas are hard to accommodate.
They won't use the new Johnny Thunder in the immediate future.
James thinks that Resurrection Man might make a good recurring guest star, like how the Phantom Stranger was to the original JLA.
The JSA lineup includes the veterans Flash, Sentinel, and Wildcat, and Atom-Smasher, Black Canary, Hawkgirl, Hourman, Sand, Starman, and Star-Spangled Kid (but not her partner STRIPE). They'll be joined later on by the new Dr. Mid-Nite and Dr. Fate. Their headquarters are located in the Upper West side of Manhattan.
David said, "the new Hourman is integral to the new JSA." While he didn't like the character at first, David was won over by Tom Peyer's HOURMAN scripts. David thinks that Peyer will cover the original Hourman's son, Rick Tyler, in HOURMAN.
Black Canary 's partner Oracle may pop up sometimes, but not a lot.
What keeps Wildcat young is a mystery; the writers haven't decided yet if they want to reveal the cause. They'll also follow up on the Wildcat/Catwoman romance.
Dr. Mid-Nite will be like this team's Batman, always showing up and disappearing.
DC wouldn't let them use the "Sandman" name, so when Sandy Hawkins rejoins the JSA, he'll be known simply as "Sand." His costume will be evolving, including several variations of the gas mask. He will also develop metahuman powers, explained by his appearance in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #117, as well as DC COMICS PRESENTS.
Hippolyta will just be a reservist in the new JSA, though she is in the first four issues. David thinks that John Byrne's re-insertion of a Wonder Woman into the Golden Age was "inspired." How this affects the history of Miss America, who was supposed to be a Wonder Woman substitute, remains to be seen. David would like to explain the fate of another Wonder Woman replacement, the original Fury, but has no initial plans for her. And while Byrne never meant for Hippolyta to use the golden lasso, David supposes that she could've retrieved it sometime during her sojourn in the past.
Jack Knight 's supporting cast members, the Shade and Ted Knight, will cross over to JSA. After JSA #4, Jack won't appear as much, since he'll be caught up in major events in Opal City, including the return of the Rag Doll. Also, he'll grow out his goatee again, and Peter Snejbjerg will design new tattoos for him.
JSA SECRET FILES #1 will be a 64-page special in May. The main story is "vital to the ongoing book," according to David. The book will show what Wesley Dodds, original Sandman, is up to, and fill us in on why Albert Rothstein, the former Nuklon, will call himself "Atom-Smasher."
David is a big fan of CHASE, and likes its use of former Infinitor, Mr. Bones. He'd really like to follow up on Bones and Chase in the JSA book. James and David thought of having Chase as the DEO's liaison to the JSA.
"Times Past"-like stories will probably be in the book's second year.
Dr. Occult will be a definite guest star, sometime after the first year, but not a member.
Some Golden Age villains will be reintroduced, including Ian Karkull.
The first story arc of JSA introduces the new Dr. Fate, who will join the JSA later. The costume will be a variation on the original.
JSA #4 will show the team is financed. Aircraft will come later.
The new Mr. Terrific appears in JSA #5.
Obsidian shows up in JSA #6-8, though in a suprising way. His former teammate Brainwave Jr. is still evil, and they have no plans to use him. Another Infinitor will appear, but who it is, is still a secret.
Around JSA #9, we can expect to see a new Injustice Society.
The second year should see an appearance by the Spectre.
They're serious about using Ma Hunkle, the original Red Tornado, for a present-day story.
At least one new descendant of the new JSA will show up, "but not in the way you might think," according to David. He'll appear for a while before the writers reveal that he is a descendant.
The first in a series of regular JSA/JLA teamups will take place at the end of the JSA's first year. If their plans go through, this crossover will bring back Hawkman.
HOPE YOU LIKED IT!
