what a simply beautiful site! with regards to the "Glass Onion" - i like that you don't feel Welles's work can only be examined in a severly scholarly context. i ran into some of that when supporting the connection between Welles and the animated Brain, of "Pinky and the Brain" fame. i think that Brain's representation of Welles is much more understanding than the image of him today in the general public, which i have discovered centers primarily around his weight and wine commercials. but i digress - just feel that the ease with which Welles translates into our modern art, be it animation or rock and roll, proves the scope of his influence and work. thank you for reaffiming that.

Melanie Griffith portrays Marion Davies and John Cromwell plays William Randolph Hearst. It was directed by Benjamin Ross, a relatative newcomer, but neverless has received good reviews. Since Hearst was the subject of Citizen Kane, this film should be right up your alley. I can't wait to see how Miss Griffith plays Marion Davies, the love of Hearst's live and for whom he left his then wife Millicent and their 5 sons. I get a big kick out of watching the stupid last hour of Titanic. That part where they are running around the boat while the ship is sinking is literally RIDICULOUS and the part where Leo is "shivering" and saying lines like "y-you're g-g-going to grow up to be an old woman and you-re g-going to m-make lots of b-babies(or whatever)is almost as bad. Well after reading your entire Titanic part of your site it took me a few trips back here all I have to say is...You sure have put alot of time and energy into defending your "opinion" of James Cameron's movie "Titanic",Why? Every one has a right to their opinion why do you feel you need to be so defensive of yours? I agree there have been better epics than Titanic but the way james Cameron handled the subject with such great respect and took the subject of a tragic death of thousands was done very well. along with his great attention to detail and historical acuracey (the set and clothes). Cameron's other movies are original and not tasteless. i don't mean to sound crazy, but you could compare "T2" to Jesus and Satan. the T-1000 would represent satan. he can change form and destroys everything in his path. the Judgement day, as said in the bible, is the day christ comes and only a few are left on the earth. Cameron may have gotten his idea for "Aliens" from the starship trooper book version, but starship troopers sucked ass anyways. He's imaginative. He's creative. and even though Titanic was over hyped you would be a damn liar if you said you could do any better of a job at any of his movies. beacause you couldn't!!!! Cameron is no martin Scorsses, but he brings us imaginative and great creative id as intertwined with dazling special affects, not to mention ground breaking. so maybe step off your high and mighty horse page maker and give the man a little respect. atleast for effort!

First of all, GREAT SITE!!! I can't tell you how much I hate "Titanic". The dialogue was horrible, the acting was lousy, and the direction was flat as a pancake. It just goes to show you 200 million dollars doesn't equal quality. Speaking of quality, have any pro-"Titanic" seen great epics such as "Lawrence of Arabia", "The Last Emperor", "Ran", "Tess", "Andrei Rublev", or "The English Patient"? These films possess something which "Titanic" doesn't- Complex characters, exterior and interior scope, and unco promising structure and intelligence. James Cameron has made entertaining films such as "Aliens" and "The Terminator", but he's hardly a original director. "Aliens" ripped off "Starship Troopers"( Book version) and "The Terminator" ripped off the works of Harlan Ellison. Cameron's other films such as "The Abyss", "True Lies", and "Terminator 2" are terrible and uninspired. Frankly, I'm getting sick of Cameron. He's a real classless guy, as witnessed by his hyberbole at the Oscars about being "King of the W rld"( what an arrogant, conceited man) and blasting Kenneth Turan for not liking "Titanic"( Hey, James! Everyone's entitled to their opinions!). Incidentally, for a great film about the "Titanic", check out the excellent movie, "A Night to Remember", whic totally blows Cameron's version out of the water!!One final thought- I wished that "Titanic" would fail at the box office so Hollywood would stop making stupid high budget films for the teenage crowd. However, Hollywood, in its infinite wisdom, continues to make these stupid high budget films, and "Titanic" is the grandest example of that.

Well, Titantic (the film) is in the distant past, but I recently found and really enjoyed your web page. The only comment I would like to add is my tremendous disappointment in the "love story" aspect of the film. Understand, when I use "story" I feel I am being overly generous to Mr. Cameron. Let us sum up the basic story: * Boy gets himself on boat. * Boy discovers girl about to throw herself off of boat because she hates her fiance so much. * Boy shows girl a good time. * Girl faces terrible decision: return to the man she hated so much that she was willing to kill herself to avoid marrying him, or go with the new boyfriend. Hmmmm..... after lenghty debate (was there a debate? I can't recall now, but usually in a DRAMA, there is supposed to be some sort of decision to be made, isn't there?) ... (may I hear the drum role please?)... ***** She goes with the new boyfriend!!! The most amazing thing about all this is it required 3 hours to tell this "story". Just once, please Hollywood, tell us a love story in which the woman (or guy) faces a difficult choice... once which challenges us in the audience to wonder just what we would do in their place. Please? My last observation. A friend of mine who is a history buff, noted how at a certain point in the film the music and lighting change. His comment, "hey, it just changed from a chic flic to a guy flic". Amen. I refer to the last hour of this movie as "Leonardo DeCaprio and the Ocean Liner of Doom" (cue Indiana Jones theme music)

After watching "Titanic", I was forced to conclude three things: 1) The $200 million spent, was well spent. I'm admit I have no real knowledge of SFX; but I thought it was very impressive. 2) Kate Winslet was wasted in this movie. "Sense and Sensibility" and "Heavenly Creatures" are both much better indicators of her talent. 3) Mr Cameron had better stick to movies wherein Arnold S. blows things up. Classic case of backlash for hipster crediblity. James Cameron isn't cool, because he appeals to the mainstream and teenage girls adore his films. But, Orson Welles, well, teenage girls definitely don't care for him, it's hip to like his films, especiall if you are an 18 year old frustrated white male movie geek, which I'm assuming you are. Hi, i just finished reading the 50 zillion pages of your opinions, so i figured that i would give you the pleasure of reading a few of mine. I think that you are completely missing the point of this film. To be honest i had never even heard about James Cameron before titanic came out, this may suggest something about the rest of his work, or maybe i am just a complete movie dud. However who cares about the rest of his work or whether the film may resemble another love story, the fact is that the film provides people with a beautiful image of love and courage, that is truly soul inspiring. I don't think that you are supposed to ta e to heart, in quite the way that you do, whether the film is that believable as a reality story or not, it is not supposed to be.Just accept that the film is how it is, and that is how it is supposed to be, nothing more and nothing less.

This is a big pitiful waste of web space. James Cameron is, by far, the greatest action director out there. Every fine intricate detail has to be perfect. He demands perfection, and he gives perfection. When "Terminator" came out, no one expected it to d all that well. Then, it broke open the box office, and made James Cameron a god. Then, he directed "Aliens", which is by far, one of the best action movies of all time. "The Abyss" was very goo as well. Escapist fair, and the first time James ever really made something personable. When "The Abyss" was made it was the most expensive movie of all time and hardest shoot. Then, he made "Terminator 2". That became the most expensive movie of all time. However, it more than made up for it at the box office. The , "True Lies", which was, again, the most expensive movie ever made. However, it was huge. Then, of course, "Titanic". I respect your opinions, but, however, going after James Cameron just because you are annoyed because alot of people like his movie is n t a good reason to call him a hack. There are many true hacks out there, unlike Cameron, who reinvented the wheel when it came to special effects, set designs, and sound. You can not sit there and say that you did not love "Terminator", or "T2" or "True L es". I was a fan of James long before "Titanic" came out. I was ready for it in July 1997, then it got pushed back, and I salivated until December. I was not disappointed. Reading your reasons why he is hack leads me to believe that you are an ignoramous and v ry immature. Feel free to e-mail me. Actually, please do. Anyone else who cares to debate, don't hesitate.

Do I believe Titanic to be a stronger film than Gone With the Wind? By far! But that is simply because I enjo yed it more as a story. I did enjoy Titanic the two times that I saw it. James Cameron has done with this movie what he has never quite done in any of his other films. He has brought some pathos to it(in other words he made all the chicks go "boo hoo" at the end. Spielberg used to have that market cornered.)Nevertheless, I didn't think it was his best directorial effort, despite the Academy Award win. His work in The Abyss was much more accomplished. His sense of camera placement and editing in that film hinted at a greater talent, almost, dare I say it, genius. Although I'm not big on Cameron's cinematic technique, I can't say that he's ever made a truly bad, unenjoyable film. Even my favorites have had their moments of weakness in my mind: Spielberg(Always, Hook), Scorsese(Kundun). But Cameron has yet to put one out that has failed to hook me in. Everyone, incuding Cameron, thought that with it's exceedingly large budget, Titanic might only break even once foreign and video was factored in. But here we are 6 months later and every weekend it still manages to stay in the top five. Maybe his commercial success isn't necessarily a sign of genius, but there is something about his work that makes you come back again and again.

The onther night I was flipping channels and saw orson welles in a movie where he played a character I think was called Longstreet. I only caught part of it and do not know the name of the movie. It also had Edward G. Robinson as a detective. The gist f the storey was that Welles character had committed a murder and his new bride was in danger. Ever since I was about 4 years old, I have been haunted by nightmares about being aboard a sinking ship. These vivid dreams have lasted for years. My mother introduced me to Titanic and other tragedies at sea which I still continue to study. For awhile I even considered being hypnotized. I have no idea why I have these dreams or what truly motivates my fascination- particularly with Titanic, but I must say, no one wanted to love Titanic more than I did. I left the theater with a few tears. However they were due to the shock of how cold & dissapppointed I felt for many reasons including for the most part what has been addressed at this site. I realize that I have a particular viewpoint that might alter my expectations of Camerons' vision. However, I am also very well aware of what makes a "real" film. Being in the biz myself- in contact with various people actually involved in the making of Titanic, I duly respect Jim's ability to open up a new worl to so many young people who now wish to go and study the history of the ship. I applaud that! However, I wish that he respected the feelings and viewpoints of mature generations who were excited to explore what I believe will be the last film made in this huge capacity about this disaster. So much has been ignored and "washed away" in order to allow way too much screen time for 2 bratty cardboard kids who should've just teepeed the boat and called it a day!

Personally, you should think before you go and making a hate page ecause this is insane. I realized that a lot of money and time went into the movie and I liked it. There was a comment about people liking the movie, about being a woman or gay, well, my father went and he enjoyed it and he obviously isn't gay. Yea so Titanic was not as good as most of us thought it was going to be. I felt that James Cameron did a great job though. With a original budget of only 99 million, he asked for favors and got them. This film helped the film indursty and that is why it w ll win best film. It is funny you hate Cameron. He seems to be one of my best friends. We live up the street from eathother and talk everyonce in a while about the weather. It is very rude of you to think that all cameron is about is explosions and poorly written storys. Think about what has to go into a feature film and he did a great job even with the budget he had. Congratulations on a well-written and well argued web page. I found that the few other anti-Titanic pages I checked tended towards the "Titanic SUCKS man !!!!!" (By the way, can anyone explain the passion that the illiterate have for exclamation marks?) I know that in a limited amount of space you couldn't point out every stinker in the enormous collection of stinkers that is "Titanic" (Or "Shite-anic" as its known around here) so I feel its up to me to draw attention to an early scene in the movie, whe Kate Winslet pulls a Picasso out of her luggage. Not only does she have a Picasso (as well as other works by other great painters - thus establishing her as 'good' and 'intelligent' in the eyes of the cretins that this movie was obviously aimed at) but he has Picassos most famous painting, and arguably the most important painting in modern art. This scene wrenched a howl of anguish from me. For the love of god. It is matched later when she shows Leonardo her Monet and says something like "Isn't the c lour amazing?" and he says "Yes!". Oh, Bravo James Cameron. Plenty of bad movies get critical acclaim, but this is beyond a joke. I hate to disagree with you after reading your great article on Titanic, but "The Age of Innocence", despite looking incre ible, managed to be both flat and hammy (which is quite the achievement), and was a disappointing version of a wonderful book. Not under-rated at all in fact. But great web page, keep up the good work.

When a movie does not grab you from the beginning with a car chase or explosion you alter your mood to a negative one and b gin to dislike everything about the picture. I know you're being bombarded by negative responses but let me be one of the few sane voices out there to say THANK YOU for speaking the truth. THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES! You could not be more on the money in your perceptive critique of TITANIC. You r ally can't go broke underestimating the intelligence of the American (or any other, for that matter) people, I guess. I went to see the film with my wife, knowing full well that a "romance" written by the author of the execrable TRUE LIES would be passable at best. But we and I were both stunned at how inept the film's script was. Jaw-droppingly bad dialogue. Hilariou anachronisms. Mortifying attempts at "wit" and "sophistication". Sure, sure, all you boosters--"it's an allegory about man's hubris in the face of nature," blah blah--well, maybe it SAYS it is; if you read enough press releases you'll buy anything. Bu look at the film. The central story, the romance between Jack (main character's name JACK--first sign of trouble) and Rose is so overloaded with hokey Hollywood cliches that, for me, it completely destroyed any sense of reality or connection to the actu l historical event. I mean, here we have a film which purports to be a record of a real event, in which hundreds of people lost their lives--and Kate Winslet's giving people the finger for laughs? Leonardo DiCaprio tells a man reciting his last prayer t "hurry up through the valley (of the shadow of death)??" WHAT??? Okay--Cameron gives lip service to the whole class angle of the film--but it's never more than that. Do you really ever believe that Jack and Rose are separated by the crushing burden of social standing? I didn't. Cameron didn't make me feel that. He just trotted out the same old chestnuts we've seen a million times about the rich being stuffy and the poor earthy types being better partiers, lovers, whatever. Did you choke up, ever at the plight of the doomed 3rd class passengers? What's that? You ay you don't remember? Oh. Yes. Too busy watching Kate and Leo race down hallways outrunning walls of slo-mo water (freezing cold water, by the way!) This to me is the crux of what makes this film so bad: this film should have been about reality, not a boatload of cliches. Romance is about emotion, about discovery and revelation, about danger, not about stock timeworn cliches. A more skilled filmmak r--or WRITER--could have taken Jack and Rose's story and invested it with infinitely more subtlety and poignancy than we got from Cameron, who must have breezed through this thing in two weeks! Come on! Imagine what Peter Weir could have done, in terms o direction! See The Year of Living Dangerously or Witness and then talk about romances that work for a mass audience! See Gallipoli and Fearless and then talk about human responses to disaster and imminent death, not to mention a real feeling for period details, so laughably dealt with in TITANIC. And as far as the ship disaster stuff goes, sure, cute little animated people are nice, and phony looing CG shots of the boat are nice, (even though you sit there thinking, "Wow. Great computer shot!") but I c allenge you to watch the sinking of the ship in Carroll Ballard's THE BLACK STALLION and tell me that CAmeron did the best that could be done. Imagine what a writer like Steve Zaillian (Schindler's List) or Robert Towne could have come up with, given the already overwhelming story of the Titanic as a starting point. What they could have shown about class and economics as central pillars of the tragedy, presented in a dramatic and believable way--not as a few "salt of the earth" snippets here and there. Which brings me to my next point: Cameron must know some of these guys, right? Surely he must have wanted his film, coming out of the gate as ne of the most expensive ever, to be the best that it could be? Why wouldn't he choose therefore to collaborate with writers who could have really delivered? It's done all the time. Writers are brought in on a friendly collaborative basis all the time to assist on scripts--why not here? Overweening EGO, perhaps? I enjoyed some of the man's previous work. Terminator (only the first one) and Aliens stand as high water marks in Hollywood--I repeat:HOLLYWOOD--action filmmaking. But his other work has been marred by the megalomaniacal indulgence, macho posturing an relentlessly middle-brow thinking that wrecked, for me, Titanic. Okay. I know a lot of people think it's the greatest movie ever made. I can sort of see why, for a new generation that's been denied the pleasure of seeing expansive, lavish spectactles that at least claim to be romantic epics. But please, please, PLE SE, you underfed masses--the next time a revival house shows a good print of, say, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA or DR.ZHIVAGO or THE SEVEN SAMURAI or even BEN HUR for god's sake--go see it! You're obviously missing something if you think TITANIC is really all that and a bag of chips. Try going to see something other than Hollywood's latest pile of crap for a change and see what emotional involvement in a film really is. YOU DESERVE BETTER. YOU SHOULD BE EDUCATED ENOUGH TO DEMAND BETTER.

Finally, someone not taken in by all the Titanic hype! I don't know what some people see in this film. It was good enough, with a few high points and great digital effects, but I can easily think of ten other Hollywood movies that were better (not to me tion countless indies). The plot was hackneyed at best and some of the writing was laughable. I didn't see anything original about the film except the fact that it took place on a sinking boat (one could say the same about Speed 2). Cameron should stic to what he does best- mindless, visceral, action pics. Leave the serious stuff to serious directors! All I want to say about you medicore review of James Cameron's "Titanic" is that you are very much ill-informed. This film, although not in any way equal to "Gone With the Wind", is a very fine portrait of the disasterous event that was the "Titanic". A few things were a little incomplete, such as the Molly Brown character, but the movie was three hours long and he had to end somewhere. Your opinion of the movie has to be respected, but the outright critizism the you expressed towards James Cameron is ru e, I should hope that no one ever publically hails you as a fraud and a phony for the whole world to see. The reason, since you don't seem to get it, that this film is as popular is simply because people love romance. They see the couple of Jack and Ros as an icon. And better yet, they represent real life, they don't live happily-ever-after, their ending is more believable because of that. I guess everyone's welcome to their own opinion. I loved Titanic, although it was no Gone with the Wind, but I certainly don't think that that gives you the right to outwardly trash the actors, the screenplay and the director. Of course, maybe I'm just rejudice because I'm a Leo DiCaprio fan. I thought that the movie was very well done. I also don't think it is very fair to compare James Cameron to anyone else. I do not consider Titantic to be on the scale of Gone With The Wind either, but why care if someone else does? You thought enough of the movie to dedicate your time to a web page. In my opinion, as well as the opinions of everyone else I know who has had the chance to view "Titanic", it was one of the best movies ever. It may not be one of your arsty-fartsy drama flicks, but it definitely had the power to move people. Most people can relate to losing a loved one and in this respect "Titanic" touched people on a very human level. Besides that, if you know anything at all about the actual Titanic, you would understand that James Cameron did an exquisite job of recreating the origin l boat, detail by detail. This was not just a movie, but an experience. As for saying it copied facets of "The Age of Innocence", I've seen it as well and I see no comparison whatsoever. Before you start critisizing someone who has been praised for a fi e accomplishment (or more particularly, calling him a hack), I think you should ask yourself if you could do a better job, or if any of the millions of viewers who loved the movie actually care about your opinion.
