Jerry Nelson was born in Oklahoma but raised in Washington D.C. He was "performing on a local radio station when he was 9 years old, [where] he began to acquire his repertoire of voices...During one lean period he answered an advertisement placed by Bill and Cora Baird, who were looking for people to tour with their puppet theater. Lying about his experience (he had never worked with puppets before) Nelson was hired and learned quickly. He then auditioned for the Muppets (1963) and was hired as a temporary replacement for Frank Oz (who had been drafted into the service). When Oz returned [Nelson] worked for the Muppets from time to time until 1970...then he became a full-time member of the company." Nelson's tremendous vocal range allowed him to perform many different types of characters as well as the announcer for "Vetrinarian Hospital" and "Pigs in Space." Nelson has also worked on other projects besides "The Muppet Show" such as "Sesame Street", "Fraggle Rock", and other television specials, movies and videos. |
