The Grand Hall was lit with a thousand candles and gave even the cavernous room a cozy feeling. Luke was absorbed in an intense conversation with Wedge when she walked, rather strutted in the room. The pale yellow satin dress had a low square neckline and empisized her incredible figure. The back was gathered in a dramatic V and swirled outward. Her infamous red hair was gathered in a spiky bun on top of her head. Twin diamond hoop earrings lay in each of the doubled pierced ears. A thin, delicate silver and turquoise necklace encircled her elegant neck. She walked steadily in his direction but then stopped and greeted Han and Leia. Lando approached and she allowed him to kiss her hand. As he bent forward she sent an arrogant smirk to Luke as if to say Do you like what you see? Mara looked stunning and she knew it. Soon a small crowd of people surrounded her. A waiter droid placed a drink in her hand. She sipped it out of politeness rather than thirst.
A purring voice startled Luke suddenly. "Master Skywalker! How lovely to see you!" The honey sweet voice belonged to Amber Jevanche, an extremely popular holo-star, not to mention incredibly sexy. Her white dress barely clung to her volupuous body. He tried not to stare. "How are you this evening Miss Jevanche?" She smiled broadly and rambled on and on about the great honor of being invited to a party at the Palace and with all the Rebellion heros. He nodded and appeared to pay attention but his thoughts were on the stunning Mara Jade. He repeatedly stole glances in Mara's direction."How would you like dance with me Master Skywalker?" Amber said as she grabbed his arm and pulled him towards the dance floor. "Well, I really can't dance that well..." She pressed herself against him firmly. Amber shook her head and said "Oh, don't be silly, just follow my lead." She pressed herself firmly against him. His face turned red as her tried to pull away before Mara saw them. "No, I am sorry, I have to go meet someone. Please excuse me." He pushed her away and left her pouting on the dance floor.
Mara also was appearing to be involved in a conversation but could not stop checking to see what Skywalker was doing. Ugh, that trampy Amber woman got him cornered. She stole glances in his direction to see if he was looking at her. "So, Mara, are you planning to become a Jedi any time soon?" Lando was asking. She snapped back to reality and smiled wickedly. "Well, we'll have to see if I just don't kill Skywalker in the process." "That'll never happen." Luke said from behind her. She spun around to see him grinning broadly like the farmboy he once was. "Oh really farmboy?" she said arching an eyebrow. "Why don't we go discuss this outside?" she said dangerously. He nodded and offered his arm like a gentleman taking a lady out for a stroll. But Mara was no lady. She took it anyway and handed Lando her drink. They strolled out to the veranda overlooking the garden. A few paper lanterns hung from pillars. "What are you thinking Skywalker?" she asked suspiciously. "Nothing important." He answered dismissivly. He waved his hand toward the ornately carved benches. "Let's sit down." Mara hiked her dress up to her thighs and climbed onto the bench. She leaned perilously against the railing. She crossed her arms defiantly. "Ok, stand on the bench. Just don't fall." He warned. "I don't know what I'd do without Mara Jade to make fun of me." he said in a joking tone. "What would you do without me Skywalker?" Mara asked in a light voice. He looked at her questioningly, wondering if she was acting this way this flirtatous manner in an attempt to make him jealous. The problem was, that it was working. "Mara, what's going on? You've been acting very strange lately. Does this have anything to do with that night, up on the balcony?" Luke was getting straight to the point, he wanted answers and whether or not there was really something there. "I don't know what you're talking about!" Mara responded, her face flushed scarlet red. Mara was trembling at the thought of him possibly saying he loved her. She didn't want to hear it. She would have given him him anything except her heart, which is what he wanted most. "Mara," Luke said softly putting his hand on her shoulder and turing her toward him, "Look at me." She leaned forward and tendrils of red hair feel from head. She stepped down from the bench and looked directly into his blue eyes. "Mara, I love you." Her heart was beating so loud she was sure he could hear it. Shw swallowed and blinked twice. Could she possibly lower the baricaded blocking love from around her heart and say that she loved him in return? She looked around frantically, everywhere but his face. She bit her lip in frustration. Mara slowly pulled away from him and walked to the entrance of the Ball Room. He stood in silence, watching another love walk out of his life. He had opened his heart to Mara and she walked away. He blinked back tears that were filling his eyes and ran his fingers through his hair. He shook his head and walked inside to hear the featured singer perform a beautiful love song. Great, just what I want to hear right now. A love song. The singer's name was Tova Synklair and had just stepped onstage when Luke walked in. She began by saying that the song she was going to sing was about 80 years old and written by a survivor of a ship that had gone down. The writer's lover was killed in the wreck. Tova started to sing and the music filled the room and swept everyone away. Her voice was divine and the words touched the party guest's hearts. Including Mara's. She stood slightly behind Luke and when Tova sang the words "Love can touch us one time and last for a lifetime." Mara's resolve not to look at Luke weakened and she stole a glimpse at him. He had shut himself off from the force completely and was not aware of her presence. He looked heart-broken and full of longing.
