"What did he say? Run that by me again."

It lurks among us. It cannot be killed. It cannot be proved. It's been alive for twenty years and it's still looking for innocent victims to prey upon...

It's that one line. At the end of A New Hope when happy Luke leaps out of the X-wing to Princess Leia. She shouts a hysterical cry of "Luu!" (She never actually says his name.) And then he answers her. Half of the world says that he was suppose to cry "Leia!", but forgot that he was being filmed and called out the actress's name instead. But Mark Hamill insists that it was a definite "Hey!"

What about the script?

No answers there. The fourth draft of Star Wars: A New Hope says as follows:

-----------------------------------------------------------------
INTERIOR: MASSASSI OUTPOST -- MAIN HANGAR. Luke climbs out of his starship fighter and is cheered bya throng of ground crew and pilots. Luke climbs down the ladder as they all welcome him with laughter, cheers, and shouting.
Princess Leia rushes toward him.

LEIA: Luke! Luke! Luke!

She throws her arms around Luke and hugs him as they dance around in a circle. Solo runs in toward Luke and they embrace one another, slapping each other on the back.

What does he sound like again?

I recorded that simple, uh, word from my VCR. Click on the word "debate" below to hear him in WAV.

DEBATE

So... Carrie or Hey?

I learned from Kay that he most likely did yell "Carrie", but it was later dubbed over with "there she..." as in "there she is".

Guin told me that, "Mark himself said that he didn't say Carrie. It sounds like Hey, to me. Just adding my little opinion."

Christine says, "I heard it,and it sounded like Hey!"

Quote Celeste: "I've just heard the wave file and it sounds so spastic! (no offence =D) It kinda sounds like luke is saying 'Eeeyaaayy' or something. It's so funny!!"

As Jenica says, "I agree with Mark, though I have not researched this matter enough to form my own opinion. I am going to watch that scene and see if I can watch his lip movements.. heheheheheh that will be fun... and then I'm going to get the WAV and slow the sound down to where I can here it fairly well..."

And Christine writes, "He had to have said "Hey" because, think about it, with all those people on the set, and if he did yell "Carrie", someone would have noticed it. Whether it have been Carrie, or Harrison, or one of the extra's, or even one of the people working on the set."

Lindsey a.k.a. Goofball comments, "In an interview, Mark says its "Hey!" but it doesn't sound like hey. People say it's Carrie, or There she, but it doesn't REALLY sound like it. It isn't likely that he woulda said Carrie, cuz that would be a little stupid. It really sounds like " GAAAARRRRY!" to me! Maybe he was yelling hello to one of his pilot buddies named Gary! Someone ask him when he comes to Aol live next time or something, but... if he did say Carrie, he could possibly say he just said Hey because he thinks it was a stupid mistake! It's the eigth wonder of the world. Oh well."

Comet6226adds, "Well, I think he said "Carrie". But, he still said it as cute as can be! And the fact that he made a mistake makes it even more cute! ::sighs and melts away at Luke's voice:: Yeah, I know. I'm such a big help! :O)"

Justine says, "I think that he could have said 'Carrie!', because they probably wouldn't have bothered to redo the whole scene just because that he made a mistake. It might not even have been 'Carrie', because it sounded like 'heeyeeee' or 'there she...', like what Kay said."

Yori Skywalker adds, "I think that was definetly a 'Carrie!' that the sound crew tried to muffle w/ background junk. I've heard that Mark accidentally called her Carrie during filming over 25 times, but was made to redo the scene. Poor Mark!"
