Ok, let's assume this is the first time you've ever downloaded a Doom Wad. (If you've already done this before you can skip most of this part.) Once you've downloaded gatcha.zip and zark.zip, copy them to your Doom directory and use your favorite ZIP utility to unzip them. Use a Virus Scan as a matter of habit, even though I've checked my files out and they were virus-free upon entering the Internet. This should give you 2 files in the case of gatcha.zip (gatcha1.wad and gatcha.txt) and 4 files in the case of zark.zip (zark.bat, unzark.bat, zark.txt, and a GIF file). The TXT files included will give you more information about the Wads.
To convert Doom into Gatchaman Doom, simply type the following at your DOOM prompt: doom -file gatcha.wad
Id Software will give you a prompt to make you aware of the fact that you are playing a modified version of Doom, so hit "return" to acknowledge that fact. That's it! You should now be playing Doom with Gatchaman graphics. If you wish to go back to playing Doom with normal graphics, the next time you play Doom type the following at your DOOM prompt: doom.
To include Zark in your fun, type the following at your DOOM prompt: zark.bat. Make sure you have a copy of dmgraph in your DOOM directory or zark.bat will not work! (Remember, you can get dmgraph.exe at cdrom.com). Zark.bat removes the small tree graphic from your main Doom Wad and stores it in a subdirectory, replacing it with a GIF of 7-Zark-7. If you were to play Doom at this point (jumping to a level such as Episode 3, Level 1) you will see Zarks where there once were trees. Only the small trees are affected by zark.bat. If you would like to return to playing Doom with the normal tree graphics, type unzark.bat at the DOOM prompt.
I've tried to make the instructions pretty straightforward, but if you run into problems, e-mail me at cu412@freenet.carleton.ca
Happy gaming!
