The royal cave was lit dimly by moonlight. The only sounds were the constant drone of cicadas and the heavy breathing of sleeping lions. Kiara sighed to herself, the only one awake. She shifted her body to another position, this time snuggling against her father's soft, warm mane. She closed her eyes tight, and tried let her mind drift, but it was no use. She moaned and rolled over again, but tumbled off the elevated platform on which the King and Queen slept. She landed on the cave floor with a hollow thud and went rolling head-over-heels until she crashed into a sleeping lioness. Kiara grunted and stood on her feet, and froze for a moment, incase the sleeping lioness should wake. The lioness didn't so much as twich an ear, so Kiara relaxed with a long sigh. Then something caught her eye. A shape, a blur of movement. Kiara snapped her head towards the mouth of the cave, and saw a small, black paw lift up and disappear from view. She cocked her head in curiousity, then stepped forward. Heck, I can't sleep anyways, she thought.
She padded outside the cave, her ears perked and alert, her rust-red eyes swiveled in their sockets for the unknown intruder. THUD. Kiara's head snapped around, her ears flattened, her teeth bared. She leapt to face the attacker, and stared into green eyes that gleamed like eerie stars. She had to resist the urge to cry her father's name, but her heart thumped louder then the deep growls coming from the green-eyed monster. She was just a little cub, but she was a lion, too. Then the monster spoke.
"Please, don't hurt me, I beg you!" pleaded the voice of a child.
Kiara's expression suddenly changed from defensive to puzzled, the concern. "Who are you?" she asked. The monster stepped forward, and was bathed in moonlight. Standing before her was a frightened little hyena puppy, half her size. He was a light brown color, like dried mud, with gray spots, black paws, and a big fuzzy mane running down his neck and over his forhead. He was shaking with fear. "What the heck's wrong with you?" asked Kiara, "I'm not gonna hurt you." The puppy was obviously tensed up, and he suddenly exhaled and relaxed, his jet-black mane slumping over his shoulders. "I'm Kiara." she said excitedly, "I'm a lion!"
The little hyena perked up. "My name's Furahi. I'm a hyena!" Kiara laughed. She bowed down, her tail waving wildly. Furahi barked happily and yelled, "Betcha can't catch me!"
Kiara chuckled and said, "Oh, yeah?" and dashed after him. They played upon the boulders behind Pride Rock. Such great hiding places they made! Kiara would hide behind them and jump out at Furahi, and he would scramble up the face of the gigantic stones to escape or dash behind another. What fun! It was impossible to keep silent for long, since one of them would snicker or giggle, giving away their hiding place. Finally, Kiara was able to tackle Furahi, and they tumbled down the rocks giggling, until they met the cold, dewey grass of leveled ground. The wrestled playfully together under the stars, the stalks of grass and cool sand tickling their noses and making them sneeze.
Finally, the two collapsed in the clearing under Kiara's favorite acacia tree, their chests heaving from exhaustion, their tired legs sprawled out in front of them. They giggled between ragged breaths, then soon it died down into normal, muted breathing until all they could hear was the drone of cicadas. When all was calm, they laid out under the stars and talked. "You're a real blast." said Furahi, "I've never had so much fun!"
"Yeah." Kiara said with a sigh, "And to think, we were scared of each other!" They both laughed. "The weird thing is, my father told me all hyenas are bad." said Kiara.
Furahi looked at her, puzzled. "No hyena in my clan is bad. They're all real nice-but they say all lions are bad." he said.
Kiara sighed and snickered. "All the lions I know are real nice, too." she said, "And I believe you about the other hyenas-if they're all as nice as you, they can't be all that bad."
Furahi smiled. "If all lions are just like you, I can't imagine them to be bad."
"Yeah," Kiara said, yawning. She turned over on her belly and closed her eyes, and soon felt Furahi's soft body curl up beside her. They fell asleep under the old acacia, keeping each other warm in the cold African night.
And for the first time in history, lion and hyena slept side by side in true peace and friendship.
