KIARA'S DISCOVERY: Simba's Fury

By Abmis 1

The inky blackness of night melted into dawn. Dew glistened like diamonds on the grass, and the golden sun turned the sky blood-red. The warm rays of sun reached into the royal cave, forcing Simba's eyes to open. He lay there for several moments, letting the warmth bathe his golden fur. Then he forced himself up and streached his stiff muscles, then opened his jaw wide, exposing his sharp canines and rolling out his rough, pink tongue in a satisfying yawn.

He stood up and shook his dark brown mane, then smacked his lips noisily. He gazed down at Nala and smiled tenderly, then nuzzled her awake. Her eyes fluttered open. She rolled on her back and grabbed his muzzle gently with her forepaws and licked his cheek. Simba chuckled. "Where's our little girl?" He asked, turning his head from side to side. "Is she hiding again?" Nala said with a yawn. Daily rouine, she thought. Kiara always woke at dawn, hid somewhere, then leapt out at Simba in attempts to startle him. Nala and Simba searched for her, when suddenly they came to a grim realization. "Kiara's gone!" Simba cried.

Furahi's eyes fluttered open. He yawned and streached, then felt a dryness in his throat. He glanced at Kiara, his new friend, sleeping soundly in a heap under the acacia. He smiled, then scanned the savanna for a water source. Sparkling in the sunlight like a star, he spotted a puddle to his right. He knelt down next to it, looking at his akward reflection, then lowered his head to drink. The clear water quenched his thirst and filled his belly. He sood up tall and took a deep breath. How beautiful the Pride Lands were! He had been a nomad all his life, and finally, his clan had settled here. His mother, in her affectionate and loving voice, had told him of their massive losses in a tragic battle over territory with lions. How his clan went through terrible famine and starvation and thirst, driven out of place after place, before they finally became nomadic.

Now, they came to this wonderful land of clear waters, fat prey, and falling rain. Green grasses and blooming trees, great boulders and snow-capped mountains. They arrived two days ago, and the matriarch of the clan looked over this land, and declared an end the the days of travel and death with three simple words, "We are home." The clan rolled in the grass and played in the sun, feasted on carrion and filled their bellies, drank the clearest water they had ever seen. Furahi and the other hyena puppies had gone exploring yesterday, and he had gotten separated from the group. He had wandered up Pride Rock, which smelled of his greatest fear: Lions.

But that was all over now. Kiara was a lion, and she was more alike to him than she was different. He sighed. He loved his mother, but she was wrong. Lions were friends, not enemies.

Suddenly, a deafening roar sounded through the breeze. Furahi scampered back towards Kiara, stumbling over his own feet, eyes wild with fear. He leapt behind her, breathing heavily. "RRROOOOOAAAAAARRR!!!" It came again, closer, louder. It shook the ground. Kiara's head shot up. "Oh no," he said. "I'm in big trouble!" Furahi whimpered audibly, "Who-Who-Who is th-that?" "My Dad." Kiara said. Furahi shuddered. He'd never seen a big male lion before. It should be okay, he assured himself. Kiara's father was just calling her.

Simba exploded from the grass in a blur of golden fur. Furahi barked in surprise. Simba growled. "Hyena!" he said with hate in his eyes. He hurled himself at Furahi. "Daddy, no!" Kiara yelled. Simba pinned the hyena to the ground. Furahi gazed into Simba's rust-red eyes. They burned like fire. He let out a yelp of pure terror. His heart thumped so loud, Simba could hear it. Kiara raced forward. "Dad, no! He's my friend." she said. "You get back! Hyenas are vicious beasts, and must be destroyed." Simba spat. Nala leapt forward and dragged Kiara away.

Suddenly, in a blur of knashing teeth, hyenas were upon Simba in seconds. Furahi was nudged to safety by his mother, but Simba continued to go after the little pup. Nala joined the battle as Kiara cowered in the thick grass, burying her head in her paws. The hyenas teared at the lions' pelts with their strong jaws and razor fangs. Suddenly, a body flew through the air, and landed with a yelp on the ground. Simba knelt down and finished off the injured hyena. The rest of the clan saw this, and ran for cover. All except Furahi. He approached the hyena's body and nudged it. Kiara gasped as she saw tears run down his face. Nala knelt down and scooped Kiara up, and limped away. Simba followed.

In the quiet morning, The Kiara heard Furahi's sad howls echo through the day. She hung her head in sorrow, and her heart was pained for him. Furahi's mother had been killed.
