Sadness. An empty, hollow sadness had filled Shetani's heart. Her Daughter had been killed. In cold blood, too. Poor Rahigi. She had only been trying to protect her beloved only son, Furahi. Now little Furahi was orphaned, he had become quiet and tearful, sobbing silently when no one was near. Shetani was the matriarch of her clan, a bold, caring leader with over 12 children and 17 grandchildren. Also she had 3 sisters and 2 neices, and 4 other females who had been accepted into the clan. That was her clan, fairly large and experienced, but yesterday proven weak.
That buffoon of a lion and his stupid pride! Beaten by lions, once again. Shetani had lost her daughter and her pride all at once. But now utter depression turned to furious anger, for moments ago, that lion, that evil lion, had banished them. Banished! To a cemetary of bones, to a dungeon, a sentence of starvation. They coundn't leave, they could'nt stay. The only way out was to rid themselves of the lions! Shetani grunted to herself, scattering dust. She scaled to the top of a great skull, eyes burning.
She yipped to get her clan's attention, who were lounging about below. The hyenas' heads perked up. "Any lion you see, kill him on sight! We must rid ourselves of those abominations!" Below her, her clan bellowed excitedly in reply.
Kiara ran around the back of Pride Rock, and spotted her father sleeping under the shade of an acacia. Her ears perked forward and she stumbled toward him, giggling. "Daddy! Play with me!" she panted. Simba lifted his head and eyed her sleepily. "Later, upendi. I need my sleep. I was up all night deciding what to do with the hyenas." he said. Kiara sighed. She missed Furahi. Then she noticed something. Simba's tail thumped against the ground. She smiled mesceiviously and began pouncing on her father's tail. After a while, Simba yelled "Enough!" and Kiara scampered away.
She ended up tripping and rolling head-over-heels until she bumped into Nala. Uzuri, a lioness nearby, stood up. "Kiara, why don't you and I go for a little stroll, hmm." "Yes, please do!" Nala said. She sensed it as one of Kiara's 'play with me or I'll drive you nuts' days. Kiara thought it would be fun to play with an older lion, perhaps she could get some hunting pointers. Plus, Uzuri had cub-sitted her before, she was very nice and smart. So the two lions headed off.
"So, Zuri, when you go hunting, is it best to chrge right out or take a risk of being seen and get real close?" Kiara asked, prancing around Uzuri. "Talkative lass, aren't you Princess?" "Well?" "Get Close, and hunt in a pride. Always hunt in a pride." Uzuri answered. She rolled her eyes. She and Kiara were pretty far from Pride Rock, near the border of the Elephant Graveyard, and Kiara had asked about a bajillion questions and would'nt shut up. "Ewww! I stepped in it!" Kiara suddenly said. Uzuri looked down and chuckled. Kiara had stepped in some animal's dung. She wiped her paw on the grass to get it off. "Geez, it stinks! Whoever made that needs to lay off the carrion for a while!"
Uzuri cocked an eyebrow. "You'll live, Kiara. Wonder what made it." She walked over to the mess and smelled it, wrinkling her nose. "Whew! Definetly a scavenger! Fresh, too." "yech! " Kiara grimaced. "You certainly are an expert on poop!" Uzuri laughed, but then a look of horror spread over her face. "Run." she said weakly. Then, managed to choke out "RUN!"
It was too late. They were surrounded. Hyenas, eyes glowing, exploded from everywhere! In a blur of gnashing teeth and crimson bood, Kiara, unnoticed, was knocked aside, rolling into a dark burrow. She recovered and went to creep out the entrance, hearing shreiks and growls and roars outside. When she reached the burrow's opening, Uzuri's bloody, mangled face suddenly plopped down, filling Kiara's veiw. The lioness was dead, and victory laughter outside was heard. Kiara shreiked and darted back into the burrow, shivering with fear. "Kiara?" someone called.
It was Furahi. He stepped forward and nuzzled Kiara. "Aww, come on. Don't be all scared." he said with a friendly smile. "Th-th-th-they k-killed her. Killed her!" Kiara shouted, and began to cry. Furahi made a choking sound and burst out sobbing. "Your pride killed my mother! Skies, I miss her!" "I'm so sorry!" Kiara cried. The two friends embraced. "We can't do this. We're smarter than hatred, Furahi! The fighting must stop or our kind'll rip each other apart." Kiara sobbed. Furahi wiped his tears. "You're right, Kiara. We've got to stop this." Kiara smiled weakly and sniffled. "Good. Tomorrow night, meet me at the cave. Sneak away, you shouldn't get caught." "Alright. Now C'mon, I'll sneak you out the back. See you tommorrow." KIara's ears drooped, and Furahi added, things'll get better. They couldn't get worse, so they'll get better." The two friends exchanged smiles, and Furahi lead Kiara towards the burrow's back exit.
Things didn't get better. They didn't get worse. They got terrible. When Simba learned of Uzuri's murder, his rising anger erupted, and to Kiara's dismay, her Father declared war on the hyenas. Furahi and Kiara had to act quickly, or the two enemies would slaughter each other in the most devastating battle the Pride Lands had ever seen.
