Furahi tossed and turned in his sleep, groaning and kicking his legs. Deep inside his mind, he was having a nightmare.
It was dark all around. Pitch black. And Furahi was lost. He stumbled over unseen obstacles, panting with exhaustion and wimpering with fear. He heard deep, menacing growls behind him. He looked back, seeing greenish-yellow eyes softly glowing behind him. He gasped as another hyena, his own kind, joined him.
She smelled of Rahigi. His mother. "Oh, mom! Thank the skies your allright!" he sobbed. Rahigi nuzzled her son. "It's going to be fine. Just follow me." She said tenderly. She led him on, Furahi seeing nothing and hearing only the growls and the thumping of his mother's feet in front of him. He smelled her comforting scent.
After awhile the growls died down. The moon came out, lighting their path. Then, Rahigi stopped. "We're safe now, Furahi. Shhh, don't be frightened." Rahigi assured Furahi. He barely had time to catch his breath when a menacing lioness leapt out of the grass. Rahigi lept protectively in front of her son, baring her teeth. The lioness was terrifying, with green glowing eyes and bared teeth.
The lioness sprang upon Rahigi and tore her to ribbons. "No!!!" Furahi yelled, sobbing heavily. Then the lioness lifted her head. And she spoke. "Remember me, Furahi?" she said in a harsh voice. Furahi gasped. "Kiara? Noooooooo!!!!"
"Nooooooo!!!" Furahi yelled, waking up. He was panting heavily, his fur soaked with sweat. He was shaking all over. "Furahi! Is everything okay?" Shetani asked, who was laying close by. Furahi looked around him. He was back in the big elephant skull, where he had gone to sleep. His grandma was right there with him. "Mom..." he choked out, tears flowing.
Shetani smiled warmly. "I know, dear. It was only a dream," she said, draping a paw over her grandson's neck. "I know. But I'll never see her again." Furahi sobbed. Shetani held him close. "You get some sleep. In the mornig I'll get you a fresh gazelle for breakfast and take you out to the swimming hole. You'd like that, wouldn't you?" she asked. Furahi nodded. "There's a good lad. Now you go ahead to sleep now; upendi. It'll be alright now," Shetani said. She licked her grandson and fell asleep. Furahi almost did, when he remembered something.
"Kiara! Oh, man! I was supposed to meet her two hours ago!" Furahi scampered out the skull, ran to the borders of the elephant graveyard, and stopped at the border. He thought of his dream and shuddered. "No. Kiara's not like that." he assured himself, and continued on to meet her.
Kiara sighed. Her eyelids began to close again, but she shook her head harshly to keep awake. Furahi was late. Very late. He might not even be coming. Just then, she heard the padding of paws, and she perked her ears up. "Furahi?" she asked. "Sorry I'm late. I fell asleep." he said as he stepped into Pride Rock's cave.
"I thought you weren't coming!" Kiara giggled and pounced on him. He laughed nervously and pushed her aside. Kiara was confused. He was trembling slightly before her. She tried to put that aside. "Furahi, this is serious! My dad is going to attack your people tommorrow! It's war!" she said frantically. Furahi gasped.
"I gotta tell my grandma! She's the matriarch, she has to get ready." Furahi said. "No! Don't, Furahi. We gotta stop this before it starts. Two people have died. More are gonna if this continues!" Kiara said sternly. Furahi shuddered. "Kiara. What could we possibly do? We're just two kids who happen to see more clearly then they do. They won't listen. I already tried talking to my grandma." He said.
Kiara's expression turned harsh. "I know! I talked to my parents, they wouldn't listen either. Now we've got to think of something different! Think, Furahi, think!" she yelled. Furahi backed up, shaking. "Why are you afraid of me all of a sudden?" Kiara asked, concerned. "My dream." Furahi said, almost inaudible. Kiara nodded. She understood he had had a nightmare about her. "It's okay, Furahi. I'd never turn on you, I'm your friend." Furahi nodded. That made him feel a little better. She'd never hurt me, he told himself. He had to trust her.
Then Furahi noticed something. "They're certainly an interesting pair." Furahi giggled, motioning towards Pumbaa and Timon, curled up together. "Yeah. They saved my daddy when he was a little boy and raised him in the jungle. Now they live here with us." Kiara said. Then, Furahi slammed his paw on the ground. "That's it!" he cried joyfully, as if he'd discovered the meaning of life. "Of course! If everyone accepts a meerkat and warthog can be friends, they'll accept anything." Furahi said.
"What's your point, Furahi?" Kiara asked. The little hyena was beaming with pride. "We've got to show them that a hyena and a lion can get along! I'll go tell my clan about the attack tomorrow, and everyone will be there. Your whole pride, my whole clan. Before the battle starts, we run out there together and show them it can happen. Then they won't have to fight."
Kiara's eyes widened. "It's genius! It's gotta work, ragazzo mio! The battle is as good as dead!" Kiara grabbed Furahi and ruffled his mane. "You rascal, I knew you'd come through!" she said. Furahi chuckled. "I gotta get home and warn my clan. Meet you right here tomorrow morning," he said. Kiara lion-kissed his cheek. "You're the best, Furahi!" The little hyena blushed. "Yeah, well, I gotta go. See ya tomorrow!" He called to her, and he ran of into the night.
It was dawn. Simba stood near the border of the shadowlands, on a wide, grassy valley. The lionesses were assembled behind him, streaching and wrestling in preparation of the battle. Simba stared blankly ahead as he awaited Zazu's report on the enemy's whereabouts. He thought of how those vicious hyenas had tried to kill him and Nala when they were cubs. He remembered how they started the stampede that killed his father. He recalled how they had destroyed his lands and killed many innocent lions in his abscence. His expression hardened as these thoughts ran through his mind.
What he did not think of was that the hyenas he was about to attack had nothing to do with those incidents. He was just seeing their species. That's it. They were hyenas, so he immediately judged that they were evil and dangerous.
Zazu soared out of the sky and landed in front of Simba, bowing hastily. The hornbill looked at his King with frantic eyes. "Sire! Someone must have warned the enemy of our attack! Their troops are assembled and ready to fight!" he said frantically. Simba turned to his Pride. "We have a change in plan..." he began, when he heard cackling from somewhere.
"What was that?" he asked no one in particular. Timon, perched on Pumbaa's brow nearby, shrugged. When the laughter came again, Simba tensed and growled. "Show yourself, coward!" he spat. "Oh, Simba. Mighty lion. Poor little Simba. you won't live to see another moon," a female hyena said, stepping forward. She was obviously the matriarch. "We've been tricked!" Simba yelled.
"Ooooh, we're a smart lion, aren't we?" Shetani sneered. Simba gasped. "The 'assembling troops' were a decoy! It's an ambush!" he said. The lionesses tensed up, ready to fight. "Alright, girls. Let's get 'em!" Shetani said. Just then, hoards of hyenas began to pour down the the valley, baring their teeth and barking wildly. They swarmed the lions, and in seconds there were several casualties. It was a massacre.
Zazu joined in, pecking the hyenas like a crazed woodpecker. Timon and Pumbaa charged through the battle, kicking and punching any hyena they saw. It was like the battle of Scar all over again, only with no fire and no Scar. Simba was the main target for the hyenas, who swarmed the young King. Shetani was the main target for the lions, who continually persued her.
All that could be seen was a mass of lions and hyenas tearing each other to shreds, in a blur of brown and tan fur. All that could be heard were the cries of pain and crunching bones, the hyenas' barks and the lions' roars. Thick clouds of dust encircled the slaughter. The smell of blood and death was strong. Jackals began gathering nearby, and buzzards circled overhead. It was like watching a violent storm.
Tucked away in their beds, Kiara curled up on the Royal Resting Stone in Pride Rock's cave, and Furahi spread out in the elephant skull in the Shadowlands, they had no idea the attack had begun so early. The only hopes to bring the deadly conflict to an end were sleeping soundly, unaware of the carnage and lethal fate their families faced.
