Cubs at Play

by Malli

The sun rose over the horizon, giving the Pride Lands a beautiful orange glow. Kiara sat at the top of Pride Rock, enjoying the view. Kovu came up to her and nuzzled her gently. "You're up early," he said.

"Yes", she replied. "I just had to see the view. The Pride Lands are always so beautiful at sunrise."

"Yeah," Kovu agreed. They sat there for a few minutes, enjoying the moment. Finally, Kovu said, "I'm going back to bed. Coming with?"

"No, I'm going to stay here awhile." Kiara smiled. Kovu smiled back, then went back down to the cave. Kiara stayed sitting, staring at the African sky. In the morning, Kiara was found asleep at the top of Pride Rock by her young daughter, Larani.

"Mommy!" the cub said. "Mommy! C'mon, wake up!"

Kiara opened her eyes sleepily, sat up and yawned. "Larani, why did you wake me up? I'm tired."

"It's time for breakfast!" the cub said.

"Alright. Let's go to breakfast. You can invite Emala and Kawnu if you like."

"Yay!" Larani exclaimed. The playful little cub went to the cave next door where her best friend Emala and her family were staying. She met her friend outside. "Hi, Emala!"

     "Hi, Larani!"

"Can you and your parents come to my house for breakfast?" Larani asked her.

"Sure, will Kawnu be there?" Emala asked.

     "Maybe," Larani answered her.

"Let me ask." Emala went to the other room. After a minute, she came back and said, "They said OK."

"All right, see you at noon," Larani replied and went to invite Kawnu. Larani's friend Kawnu lived farther away from the Pride Lands than any of Larani's other friends. In fact, he lived completely on the other side! But Larani was fast so it didn't take her long to get there.

"Hey Larani!" he greeted her at his door. "What's up?"

"Will you and your folks come to my house for breakfast?" Larani asked him.

"OK. Do you know if Emala will be there?"

     "Yeah, she will."

"Just a sec." Kawnu went to go ask his mom, Mukala. He came back and said, "Mom said they're busy, but I can go myself."

"Let's go!" Larani replied, and the cubs went pouncing and playing to the Pride Lands.

Nala, the lionesses, Kiara, Kovu, Larani, Kawnu, Emala and Emala's parents were at breakfast. They all ate, and agreed that Nala is a very good cook! "Thank you," Nala said.

The cubs ate quickly, then Larani asked, "Mom, can we go and play?"

     "Sure," Kiara said.

"But make sure you come home in time to do your chores," Emala's mother, Sarana, said. Larani and Emala grinned mischievously to each other. "Yes, Larani, be home in time for chores," said Kiara.

     "Yes, Mommy," said Emala.

     "Yes, Mom." said Larani.

"We'll be good." Kawnu said. With that, the cubs ran off to play.

"So what do ya' wanna play?" Kawnu asked.

"Hmm..... I don't know." Emala smiled and winked at Larani. She snuck up behing him and tapped him on the shoulder. "Tag! You're it!" she laughed.

"RRR!" Kawnu growled. "You tricked me!" They started to chase each other around.

Larani called, "Hey, guys!" but the two weren't paying any attention to her. They just kept giggling and laughing and acting silly. "Hmph!" Larani snorted and stomped away. She started to walk home. She sat under a tree, feeling sad, when she heard a voice from behind her.

"Hello." Larani quickly turned around. "Are you sad about something?" It was another boy cub.

"I'll be all right." Larani answered him.

The other cub had bright sky-blue eyes, a golden mane and fur about as dark as Kovu's. "My name's Jobari."

     "I'm Larani."

"Wanna play hide-and pounce?" he asked her.

"Sure!" she said happily. So she went off to play with her new friend. Soon they bumped into Emala and Kawnu. "Hi, guys! This is my new friend, Jobari." Larani introduced him. Emala and Kawnu introduced themselves, too. Then they ran off again. The four became fast friends. As time went by, it came to be that Emala and Kawnu were always together, and that Larani and Jobari were always together, too. And they all lived happily in the Pride Lands for many years to come.
