King Chuki paced back and forth on the moss-covered ledge overlooking the desert Oasis. His dark brown mane was a sharp contrast to his light, creme-colored pelt, and his emerald-green eyes gave him an all-together mythical appearance. His jaw hung low as he paced and huffed. "Chachari! Any sight of her?" He yelled loudly over the ledge.
"No, not yet, dear!" a faint female voice said. Chuki snorted. "She's gonna get it when she comes back." He muttered under his breath. Waridi was costantly straying out into the desert with that freedom-happy fox egging her on. He had specifically told her not to wander off today. "How many times must she defy me!" Chuki growled.
Meanwhile, near the edge of of Chuki's lands, Waridi darted to a nearby reflecting pool she was familiar with. Jak's limp body bumped up and down on her back as she trotted toward to pool. Mpalio was not far behind. "I still think you're making a terrible mistake. What if he slits your throat the moment you wake him?" the little fox warned. Waridi chuckled. "Nonsense, Mpalio. He's just too cute to do such things." she answered. Mpalio smirked. "That's exactly what your father said when you were born, and look what happened!"
Waridi ignored her friend and knelt down, allowing Jak to slide gently to the ground. She gazed at him dreamily, like a teenage girl staring fondly at the cute boy at school. Mpalio stepped infront of her, breaking the spell. "Are you listening to me, Waridi? He cannot be trusted." Mpalio shouted. Waridi scoffed at the idea and grabbed Jak by the loose skin on his neck and dragged him to the pool's calm banks.
She unceremoniously splashed cold water on the lion's face. His eyes shot open, his head flung straight up. Waridi gasped, not expecting this. Jak leapt up, growling as he hurled himself at the reflecting pool, disturbing its glassy surface as he spashed through the shallows. He looked around, gasping, as if confused and fearful. He then noticed the water, staring at it disbeleif for a few moments, then plunging his muzzle down as he began lapping up the water voraciously.
This went on for several minuits as Mpalio and Waridi looked on in horror at such manners. Then the handsome rogue lifted his head, looking ridiculous with water trickling from his soaked chin. He panted heavily, then licked his lips and shook the water off. It was then that he turned and faced Waridi, and they both gasped as their eyes met. They stared at one another for a long time, their eyes locked and unblinking. Mpalio watched the spectacle silently with a puzzled expression.
In Jak's perspective, he saw a heavenly angel. A beatifully tanned pelt and stunning green eyes. Such a curvy and delicate figure. Her body had never known a day of work, her eyes had never beheld the tradgedy of loss. She smiled sweetly and flirtatiously at him, her tail waving gracefully behind her.
Waridi saw straight through his soft blue eyes and into his soul. A carefree lion who had suffered through many hardships, but had the strength to pull through and the easy-going carefree spirit to move on. He was a beautiful shade of light tan with a luxuriously silky blonde mane that flopped around his face in the breeze.
Their heart beats quickened as Waridi finally spoke. "Are you okay?" she asked. Jak swooned at her heavenly young voice. Such kindness was heard in her every word! "I'm fine. A little shaken, but fine." he answered, then added, "Thank you so much for coming to my rescue out there." He moved a little closer to her. Waridi's heart skipped a beat upon hearing his voice, and her breathing quickened.
"No trouble at all." she answered as properly as she could. Jak wanted to tell her his name, and searched his clouded memory for any signs of it. He knew he'd forgotten most of his past from the moment he awoke. All he could remember was feeling weary and tired as he trudged through some desert called "The Outlands". Then the next think he knew, he was staring at a goddess surrounded by paradise. He wondered briefly if he had died.
"My name's Majaka," he suddeny blurted the moment he remembered it. "And you?" he asked. "Princess Waridi, heir to the throne of these lands. Majaka" She said, bowing slightly in the prescence of a lion, as she was taught to do. Jak looked at her in puzzlement. "If you're a Princess, why do you bow to me, a lonely rogue?" he asked. Waridi smiled. "Princess or not, you are a male and superior to me. Is that not right?" she asked.
Jak shook his head hard. "No. It's not right. I'm not superior to you just because of my gender. That's unjust. Nor are you superior to me because of your status. We are all equals here." he said, frowning. Waridi gasped. "This is so new to me." se replied. "Don't you want me to bow?" she sked quizzically. Jak cringed. "No." He then smiled and knelt down, nudging Waridi back on her feet. She smiled back at him.
"Thank you, Majaka." she said. Jak smiled. "Call me Jak." he said. Their faces were inches away. Jak knelt in to kiss this angel he had discovered, but Waridi pulled away in shock. She could not believe what he had said. Waridi had always inwardly despised the way she had to behave in front of male lions. Even this wonderfully gorgeous male must beleive in the same customs. But he had proved her wrong, openly and honestly saying what she had always beleived on the inside but would not dare say on the outside. This lion was amazing.
Jak could see this delicate lioness was suffering inside. How could her pride put her through such awful rituals that made her feel inferior? He wondered what other struggles were happening in the mind of this "Princess", but he was certain there were others. "Waridi?" Jak asked. Waridi faced him, but just as she was about to speak, an older lioness came crashing through the brush. "Waridi! There you are! Chuki has been worried sick!" Chachari said. The plain-looking lioness then noticed Majaka and gasped, bowing hastily. "Sorry sir! I did not notice your prescence!" Chachari said quickly.
Chachari noticed Waridi was not bowed. "Daughter! Lower your form in the presence of a lion!" she ordered. Waridi sighed and began to bow, but Jak stopped her. "It isn't necessary, ma'am." he said as gently as possible. Chachari lifted her head hastily. "As you wish." she said in a harsh, icy tone concealed by a smiling face. It was then that Chuki joined the group, leaping dramatically through the clustered jungle palms. Waridi and Chachari immediately bowed.
"Bow, you insolent ruffian!" Chuki spat the moment he noticed Jak. "Why?" Jak asked. "Bow, damn you!" Chuki roared. Jak lowered his head quickly. "Waridi. Arise." Chuki said harshly. Waridi lifted her head. Jak could see the fear in her eyes. With a strong, steady blow of rage, Chuki struck his daughter hard in the face. "You foolish girl! You know you are not permitted beyond our borders. Another episode like this and I'll beat you 'till your skull shatters!" Chuki roared, pacing.
"I'm terribly sorry, father. I was a fool, and shall not defy you again." Waridi choked out, crying softly. Mpalio, who had been silent all this time, turned his head and cringed. Jak's heart filled with undescribable rage. He tried to contain it, but it was too strong. He hurled himself forward, roaring defiantly, and cuffed Chuki with all his streangth. The older lion staggered to the ground.
Jak stared at Chuki for a few moments, in disbeleif of what he had done. But his expression changed quickly. "HOW DARE YOU HARM HER!!!" Jak yelled furiously. Mpalio turned to see what had happened, and barked with delight at what Jak had done. Chachari reacted differently. "How dare you harm a King!" she said, racing to her mate's side. "Someone had to stick up for her! What kind of mother are you to aprove of what that...that monster did to her!" Jak said as he raced to Waridi's side and helped her to her feet. Mpalio darted forward to assist Jak. Waridi smiled weakly. "Don't worry. I'm fine." she said.
At that moment, Chuki got up and limped up to Jak, who did not bow at all. "You'd better thank the skies you're male, or I'd have your head for that," Chuki spat. "But I don't wanna ever see your face in my lands again. EVER!"
"As you wish," Jak said. He smiled and winked flirtatiously at Waridi as he walked out of the edge of the Oasis and into the desert eve. He muttered "What a day I've had," as Waridi watched his shape disappear in the approaching night. Her face still stung from the punishment she'd received, but she didn't regret her outing for a moment. She had discovered the most wonderful lion on earth.
"Enough of this cherade. Let's move on!" Chuki said sternly. Chachari followed her King deeper into the Oasis, but Mpalio and Waridi remained by the pool a few moments longer. "I must admit I was wrong, my dear friend. That Majaka fellow is quite a dashing lion. Of course I'm a poor judge of leonine beauty, but an excellent judge of character in any form." Mpalio said, grinning. Waridi smiled off in the directon the mysterious young rogue had left in, taking her heart with him.
"Mpalio, dear boy, do you believe in love at first sight?" she asked as they began to follow Chuki and Chachari. Mpalio smiled at the thought of a Princess and a Rogue as a couple, and replied softly, "I certainly do."
As the sun sank lower in the red desert sky, a new love was rising in the hearts of two young lions.
