Gwazi watched silently as his cousin Chuki patrolled through his territory. Just the sight of Chuki made his heart boil with rage. He hated Chuki with the deepest passion. He remembered what his cousin had done to his family so many years ago...

Gwazi had once been the bright and bold king of this land. He was loved by all, and lived a life of happiness and peace. He had a wife he adored, a young adult daugter, triplet teenage sons, twin cub daughters, and a brand-new week-old baby boy. he adored his large family and was a loving father and a wonderful King.

Then the tyrant Chuki came along. Gwazi remembered how his cousin was so brutal and defiant as a cub that his own mother abandoned him. Now he was back to plague Gwazi. In a fast and bloody battle, Chuki mercilessly slayed Gwazi's entire family, including his wife and mother. He had nearly rescued his week-old son when his cousin leapt from the shadows, grabbed the infant, and tore it apart right infront of Gwazi's eyes.

Gwazi never forgot what he did next. "Want him back?" the muderer said, smiling. "Here you go." Chuki then hurled the dismembered cub directly at Gwazi's feet. Overcome with grief and horror, Gwazi had thrown himself off the highest kopje.

Gwazi had survived. He had landed in a patch of sawgrass that tore him up badly. His once beautiful creme-colored pelt was now dull gray and covered in dark scars. His mane was very dark, like Chuki's, but was matted and wild from lack of care.

And there was Chuki, walking proud and healthy. He had a beautiful wife and daughter, and he didn't even deserve them. Gwazi roared in anguish and ran away quickly, collapsing after he could run no more. He lifted his tear-stained face to the sky.

"With the skies as my witness, I swear I'll wipe Chuki's seed from the earth FOREVER!!!" He called, his voice echoing through the Outlands.

Waridi sat quietly among the kopjes, among her mother and a group of lionesses conversing. Waridi was silent and still as the discussion washed around her. Chachari was chatting with two lionesses nearby in the midst of her other talking pride sisters. "Let me tell you, Waridi has been quite a rebel lately. She's been sneaking about with this awful boy! Luckily, she came to her senses and isn't seeing him any longer," Chachari droned.

Waridi gazed in the distance at a small female cub, no more than eight weeks old. She was sitting quietly as she listened to her mother talk relentlessly. Then a male cub walked onto the scene, strutting proudly. The two cubs who should have been playing in the sunshine were forbidden to do so. The female cub quickly bowed as the male cub passed. The cub's mother looked to her daughter and corrected her posture. The cub nodded and apologized to her male peer, bowing lower.

The little girl is trying so hard to please, her expression serious. It is a glimpse of Waridi at that age. It is relentless conditioning...the path to becoming a proper young lady. Chachari's chatter goes on, with the other two lionesses adding in a word here and there or nodding quietly. Waridi pays no attention, just stares at the young cub...who is obviously very unhappy. It was torture to see it.

Jak sat silently on a great precipeice overlooking a troop of colobus monkeys soaring through the air while clinging to vines. Jak is a total wreck. He closes his eyes as a chilly wind washes over him, letting it clear his mind. Waridi stepped from the shadows behind Jak, unnoticed. She was smiling dreamily.

"Hello, Jak," she said softly. Jak turned to see her, stunned. He clambered to his feet clumsily and stare her down. Waridi's smile widened as she spoke her next words. "I changed my mind." Jak felt his emptiness refilling with a warm, wonderful happiness. He couldn't help but grin.

"I thought you might be up here, and.." she began. Jack approached her and silenced her with a soft "shhh." He had a glorious Idea. "Come here," he said warmly. He took her paw and lead her to the edge of the cliff. "Now close your eyes" he said with an impish grin. Waridi smiled with anticipation, waiting for him to kiss her. Instead, he pranced to the very edge of the precipiece and snapped loose a long, sturdy vine.

He worked quickly. "Keep your eyes closed, now. Don't peek," he repeated as he fasioned a harness from the vine. He then carried it to he feet and guided them through the vine-harness. "Now step through, that's it," he instructed her softly. Once she was firmly in the harness, he led her to the very edge.

"Do you trust me?" he asked. "I trust you." she replied reassuringly. Jak smiled as he grasped the upper part of the vine tightly and wrapped it around his forepaw. He straddled Waridi's back for extra support, and then gently eased them both off the egde of the cliff. The vine swung them gently downwards, and the jungle passed by in a slow whirr beneath them. The wind blew their fur wildly. "Alright. Open your eyes," he told Waridi.

It was such a fast dip before they began to swing gently through the air, Waridi had not even noticed it. She gasped as her eyes fluttered open. There was nothing in her field of vision but jungle. It was like there was no harness on them at all - just the two of them soaring. The Oasis unrolled toward her, a shimmering emerald jewel in the sunset sky. There was only the wind, and the hiss of Jak's breath on her neck.

"I'm flying...Jak!" she exclaimed joyously. She leaned outward and spread her forelegs wide like wings. Jak held tightly to her back to steady himself. He then leaned in close and sang softly in her ear: "Come, Josephine, in my flying machine, going up she goes, up she goes." Waridi chuckled at this and closed her eyes, feeling herself floating weightless above the forest floor. She smiled dreamily and pushed back against Jak's chest. He pushed forward slightly against her.

Slowly and cautiously he raised his paws, forlegs outstreached, and they met hers. Their paws intertwined, and their fingers slowly caressed through and around each other. Jak tipped his face forward, his heart pounding with joy. The vine slowly came to a stop, leaving them dangling in mid-air. Jak let the scent of her wash over him, and then he leaned in close until his cheek was against hers.

Waridi turned her head until her lips were near his. She lowered her forelegs, turning further, until she found her mouth with his. Her heart was aching, yearning, and such a warm feeling overcame her. Jak wrapped his forepaws around her from behind, and they kissed like that with her head turned and tilted back.

She's surrendering to him, to the emotion, to the inevitable. They kissed, slowly and tremulously, and with building passion. A burst of warm wind brings up leaves from below and circles them in a spiral of color as they hung suspended from the slowly swaying vine, kissing deeply.

Gwazi watches from a nearby thicket, hidden among the brush. He growled at the sight, at the joy and love the young lions felt while he suffered inside. "I hope you enjoy your time together!" he sneered to himself. "Because it won't be lasting much longer."

Unaware of Gwazi's prescence, the two young lovers continued their beautiful first kiss, indifferent to the world around them. They felt they'd be together forever after.

     To be continued...
