American actor
James Spader is know for the movies Sex,
Lies and Videotape, Pretty In Pink and more recently Stargate.
Cordelia: John Tesh?
A former TV show host turned musician, John Tesh
is almost universally mocked in the press but still seems to sell records.
Cordelia: Good to know you've seen the
softer side of Sears.
The department store Sears was
for years best known as a place to buy tools and appliances. In their make-over
attempt to boost their clothing sales they introduced the "softer
side of Sears" slogan. As Cordelia is quick to point out however,
Sears has not become the first choice of the fashionably dressed.
Xander: Not much goes on in a one Starbucks
town like Sunnydale.
A play on the phrase a "one horse town" used to describe a small and
slow placed town. Starbucks is of course the
hugely popular coffee shop that can be found on every other street corner
in a thriving metropolis.
Buffy: It's two hours on the freeway from
Neiman-Marcus?
Unlike Sears, the upscale Neiman-Marcus
department store would certainly
have clothing that met Cordelia's standards.
Buffy: What you like sent away for the Time-Life
series?
Did you get the free phone?
Time-Life is the direct marketing
company responsible for many book, video and music series. While they
do often have incentives to order you're more likely to get a free phone
from Sports Illustrated. Unfortunately, Time-Life does not appear (at least
currently) to have a book series on the occult.
Buffy: Sorry, that's incorrect but you do
get this watch and a years supply of Turtle Wax.
For some reason, a supply of Turtle Wax
car wax seemed to be a very popular
consolation prize on numerous games shows.
Giles: I'd much rather be at home with a cup
of Bovril and a good book.
The first of the British cultural references from Giles. Bovril
is a food substance that can be spread on toast or made into a hot drink
among other things. It's be described as "liquid
cow" and is apparently extremely salty.
Buffy: Live in the now, ok? You look like
DeBarge.
