SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Julia Roberts, Harrison Ford and Madonna joined 16 other stars trying to ax a deal over old-growth redwood trees.

The celebrities say a plan agreed to by Pacific Lumber Co. and the government does not go far enough to protect old-growth redwoods and threatened wildlife on California's north coast.

The 19 stars signed a letter written by actor Woody Harrelson saying the plan to conserve 200,000 acres of timberland is simply too little too late.

``We appreciate a concern for protecting habitat, but this deal is not good for the forest and is an insult to taxpayers,'' the letter read.

Pacific Lumber's property includes groves of 1,500-year-old redwoods in the Headwaters Forest about 300 miles north of San Francisco, the largest privately owned stands of ancient redwoods in the world.

The letter was sent to all 120 legislators, who are discussing the fate of the state's $130 million share of the Headwaters deal.

Harrelson, 37, star of the TV show ``Cheers'' and the film ``Natural Born Killers,'' was arrested last year when he climbed atop the Golden Gate Bridge to protest the deal.
