Four Days in April

Day 4

April 13, 1912

7:00 AM
Erin awoke to the soft glow of sunlight through the window. Sitting up she noticed the dark haired girl asleep in the chair beside the bed. Catherine's dark hair spilled softly down her back those luminous blue eyes closed in sleep, the first peaceful sleep of the voyage.

Quietly Erin slipped from the bed. Grabbing her dress from the armoire she cautiously opened the door to Catherine's room. Entering the large room she softly shut the door.

Once she had dressed and prepared herself for the day, she pulled a morning dress of the deepest blue and laid it on the bed. She put the curling rod on the burner to warm and went to order Catherine's breakfast.

8AM

"Miss Catherine" the voice said softly awakening her from sleep. Combined with the smell of coffee and bacon she awoke. Erin stood in front of her smiling. "Did you sleep well?"

The smile was contagious and Catherine felt herself smiling in return. "Yes, but I must say this chair is not the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. You seem cheerful this morning."

"I am. I've got everything ready.. So if you would dash into the water closet and join me in your room. So I can make you look beautiful. Remember Mr. Andrews is giving you and Mrs. Brown a tour of the ship at ten."

Catherine watched as Erin left. She was becoming use to her maids open and friendly ways. The joy the girl had for life, the tales she would tell wile preparing her for her schedule of social engagements. After splashing cold water on her face, she went into her room. Erin had been busy. Breakfast waited at her dressing table and a cup of coffee beckoned her. Sitting down she took a sip as Erin began brushing her hair. The girl never seemed to tire of the chore and as she brushed she started telling a tale of a friendship that lasted a lifetime and beyond.

12:00 PM

Catherine sat, for once alone, in the Verandah Cafe enjoying a solitary lunch. Her thoughts rushed over the last year of her life.

Had it only been a year, she thought. Brian his dark and brooding ways, his passionate kisses, crying at his funeral. Her father's fury when she told him she was with child. Six months at her Uncle's estate awaiting the birth of her son. His birth. Seeing his small beautiful face for the first time and the last.

"Such a beautiful and sad smile. May I join you?" looking up she saw Matthew Light standing beside the table. She nodded and indicated the opposite chair. "Would you like to talk about what ever caused that smile?" he asked sitting in the indicated chair.

"Mr. Light, thank you, but it is a private matter.

Nodding his understanding he watched as once more the mask of society settled on her beautiful face, hiding whatever pain she felt. Inwardly he screamed for the loss. So they sat exchanging polite nothings. Neither was aware of Molly Brown sitting across the room smiling at her matchmaking skills.

11:00PM

Seated at her dressing table Catherine stared at her reflection. A half hour before she had sent Erin to bed and was now alone. For the first time on the voyage no one was going to interrupt her. She wondered why she couldn't respond to Mr. Light's jokes and compliments. Her father would even approve of the man, he was wealthy and from the gossip Molly had whispered from a very old and well respected family. Even Les, who had saved her from herself didn't interest her. The only man who found his way into her dreams and thoughts was her son. Wiping the tears from her face, she rose and crawled into bed.

As she slept, she dreamed of the life that could have been or should have been or perhaps was. Her, Erin and her son happy and together.
