Chapter 11

Reinforcements

Weaving an amusing tale Gabrielle skillfully zig zagged through the crowded square without missing a word or a step. Overwhelmed by the bustle of the large city, Lila watched in amazement as they navigated a path through the sea of people. Just as the tavern came into sight Gabrielle finished her tale, only to be begin another as they approached the doorway. Listening to the reddish blonde's chatter the younger woman could not help
smiling to herself. "I'd forgotten how much she loves to talk." Entering the tavern they stopped just inside, allowing their eyes a moment to adjust to the dimmer light.

"Gabrielle, over here!" called a friendly voice. Searching for its source she found Iolaus near the far wall waving to her. A smile spread over her face as she grabbed Lila's arm. "Come on." Quickly they made their way through the crowd to Iolaus's table. "Hi, Iolaus." greeted the petite bard.

"Hello." he replied standing to offer her a chair. "Who's your friend?" Motioning with his head to her dark hared companion.

Placing an arm around Lila's shoulder. "This." announced the Bard with a hint of pride in her voice. "is my sister, Lila. Lila this is Iolaus."

Iolaus offered his hand. "Nice to finally meet you. Gabrielle's told me a lot about you."

Accepting the offered hand, Lila shot Gabrielle a surprised look. "She has?"

"Yes, she has." answered a voice from behind them. All turned to greet the new arrival. Gabrielle's face light up as she motioned to the man. "Lila, I'd like you to meet Hercules."

"Hercules?" whispered the stunned farm girl, as her jaw dropped.

"Hello." said the large demi god offering his hand. Lila stared at him unable to move, till she felt Gabrielle's elbow dig into her ribs. Jumping slightly she nearly yelped as she quickly took the offered hand. "Your really, Hercules?" Shaking the hand rapidly.

Laughing as he gently plied her hand from his. "So they tell me." Motioning toward the table. "Why don't we sit down?" Each found a chair around the table. Hercules' mood turned solemn as he turned to Gabrielle. "How is Xena?"

"She's fine." laughing sadly. "Not that she would admit otherwise." Adding with a slight shrug. "You know Xena."

"Yeah, I know, Xena." replied the large man with an equally sad laugh.

"Gabrielle?" asked a timid voice, as gentle a hand touched her shoulder. Looking up the bard found a round, boyish face staring down at her. "Homer!" squealed the Bard jumping up to embrace the startled young man.

Laughing nervously, he returned the embrace. "Glad to see you remembered me."

"Of course, I remember you." she answered releasing him. Playfully slapping the back of her hand against his chest. "How could I forget the number one bard at the academy?"

"No." corrected the young man. "The number two bard, you were number one."

Gabrielle smiled shyly. "Not for long. What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be at the academy?"

"Well," began the man. "I heard about the trial and figured if Xena was here you'd be close by. So I made arrangements with my instructors to make this a field trip of sorts. They agreed to let me miss a few classes if I agree to tell the story of the trial in full." Leaning in closer he added in a whispered tone. "Personally, I think I got the better end of the deal. I get to see an old friend and watch an incredible story unfold. You know this is going to make a great story?"

Sadness filled the Bard's eyes as she answered softly. "Yes, I suppose it will." Taking a deep breath she forced a smile. "There are some people I want you to meet." Quickly she made introductions, then offered Homer a seat.

Food and drink was sent for, while stories and laugher were shared among the small group. Shortly after the food arrived, so did Ephiny. Once again, Gabrielle introduced everyone. Noting with some amusement the red blush which spread over Homer's face as the Amazon Queen took his hand, shaking it firmly. With some concern she also noted, Ephiny's attempts to avoid eye contact with her. "What on earth did Xena say to her?" wondered the Bard silently.

As Gabrielle considered pursuing the subject two more unexpected arrivals caught her attention. With disbelief she rose to meet the couple walking towards her. "Gabrielle, it is so good to see you." said the young woman reaching to the Bard with both hands.

Gabrielle took the offered hands, squeezing them gently. "Princess Jana." Looking to the dark hared man next to her. "Prince Agranon, What are you doing here?"

Prince Agranon placed an arm around his wife's shoulders. "We were in Athens for the festival and heard of your trouble. After everything you and Xena did for us, we wanted to see if there was anything we could do to help."

"Thank you." Answered the Bard with a warm smile. Quickly she introduced the newcomers, before returning to her seat. Jana and Agranon thanked Gabrielle for her offer to join them, but declined with excuses of other commitments to attend to. Quickly they departed, shortly after which Hercules and Iolaus excused themselves as well. Homer offered to show Lila the statue of Athena located near the center of the square. An offer to which the young woman quickly agreed. As the young couple departed Gabrielle and Ephiny found themselves alone at the small table.

"Ephiny." began the Bard, noticing the Amazon tense slightly before turning to face her. "I just wanted to thank you for taking care of Lila on the road. For keeping her out of harms way and out of trouble."

"Well," answered the warrior as a playful smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. "if she's anything like her sister trouble will find her. Besides," Allowing the smile to spread over her well defined face. "it's was the least I could do for 'my Queen'."

Gabrielle chuckled. "Not to loud with that Queen stuff, okay. I don't want people bowing and curtsying to me or anything."

Laughing, Ephiny shook her head. "No, we can't have that now can we." As the laughter died away, a heavy silence moved in to take it's place.

Never one to tolerate silence company for long, Gabrielle quickly drove it off. "Ephiny is everything alright? I mean you seem...distracted. Did Xena say something to upset you?"

To Gabrielle's surprise and concern the Amazon visibly paled at the mention of the Warrior Princess. Turning away from the reddish blonde's searching eyes the Amazon warrior quickly replied. "No, no she just asked me to... do her a favor."

"A favor?" repeated the Bard. "What kind of a favor?"

Ephiny opened her mouth to speak than quickly snapped it shut, turning away. "Just a favor."

Lila came bouncing up to the table with Homer in tow. "Gab!" she cried bubbling with excitement. Gabrielle cursed her sister's timing as she turned her attention from the withdrawn Amazon. Unaware of the intrusion she had caused, Lila asked. "Have you seen the booths in the square? There must be hundreds of them. The market is bigger than all of Potodaia."

Laughing at her sister's bewilderment Gabrielle shook her head. "Yes, Sis. Athens is a big place and you've just seen the square. Wait till you see the rest of the city."

"The rest of the city?" repeated the young woman, her eyes growing wider. "You mean there's more?"

"Leagues of it." answered the Bard

"Wow." gasped the younger woman.

"Gabrielle, If you'll excuse me, I have some business to attend to." announced Ephiny raising to her feet.

"Of course." Answered the Bard raising to her feet as well. Understand the Amazon was making a formal though private request for her Queen's leave.

Bowing slightly to the bard. "I'll meet with you later." assured the Amazon before turning to disappear into the crowd. Watching her go, Gabrielle almost missed Lila's comment.

"What did you say?" Asked the older sister.

"I said, you sure do know some important people." repeated Lila.

"Yeah, I guess I do." answered the Bard.

Chapter 12

Moral Support

Listening to the steady rhythm of her heartbeat, Xena focused on the sound in an attempt to quiet her raging thoughts. Taking a deep breath, she released it slowly allowing her large frame to relax into the worn mattress beneath her. Just as calmness was starting to settle in, the silence was broken by footsteps in the corridor. "Now what?" growled the Warrior rolling off the cot. Waiting for the approaching figures to appear she was not prepared for her guests.

"Mother!?" she called in disbelief as she moved to the barred door.

"Xena." answered the smaller woman moving to embrace her daughter as best she could with the cold, iron bars between them. Xena returned the embrace, welcoming the comfort it offered.

After a moment, Cyrene leaned back smiling up into the face she knew better than her own. Her smile faded to concern as she noticed a purplish bruise just below her daughter's hairline. Reaching through the bars she brushed back the hair to reveal a gash. Lovingly she traced a fingertip over the wound. Then with equal care she studied the other faded bruises covering the proud face before her. Choking back a sob she took note of the bandage wrapped around the younger woman's upper chest and shoulder. Feeling her heart sink at the sight a gasp escaped her lips. "Oh little one, what have they done to you?"

Guilt seized the warrior's heart at the sound of her Mother's pain filled words. Silently she cursed herself for once more causing the woman pain. ‘Haven’t I hurt her enough already?’ wondered the warrior. Blinking back tears the large woman reached for her mother's hand. With great effort she forced a smile while meeting the warm eyes staring up at her. "I'm all right, Mother." Feeling her courage wane the humbled warrior bowed to place a gentle kiss on the hand, adding quietly. "Honest."

Biting her lower lip to calm its quivering, Cyrene reached through the bars to stroke the bowed head. Raising to tiptoes she placed a tender kiss on her daughter's forehead, then gently pulled her forward till their foreheads met.

Fighting to keep the emotion from her voice Xena spoke. "Mother you shouldn't have come." Losing the battle she whispered. "It's not safe."

"Nonsense." whispered back Cyrene, forcing the sorrow from her voice. With a more determined tone she added. "You are my daughter. Where else would I be?"

An emotion filled laugh escaped the young woman as she raised her head to respond. Movement from behind the smaller woman caught the Warrior's attention. Looking up she found herself eye to eye with blue eyes which mirrored her own. Many things about the man staring back at her were familiar, especially his long black hair and large muscular frame. Her mother had often said they took after their father in appearance.

"Toris?" questioned the dark hared woman, unable to hide the shock in her voice.

"Hello, Sis." answered the man as he reached through the bars to rest a hand on her arm. Taking in the room with a motion of his free hand, he smiled crookedly. "I see you haven't lost your taste for fine accommodations."

"Better than the stables." she shrugged with a lopsided grin of her own. Both laughed at the lame joke.

"Did you bring Mother here?" asked the young woman, a hint of anger slipping into her voice as the grin faded.

Sensing his younger sibling's change in moods Toris retracted his arm. "More like she brought me. I tried to talk her out of it," In a lighter tone. "but you know how she is when she gets her mind set on something."

Once more a lighter mood graced the Warrior's face. "Yes, I know." She and her brother may have inherited their father's physical traits, but both knew it was their mother who graced them with hardy stubborn streaks.

Ignoring her children's teasing Cyrene searched the cell behind Xena. "Where is Gabrielle?"

"I sent her to get something to eat." replied the younger woman. "She hasn't eaten all day."

Cyrene raised a questioning eyebrow and for the first time Xena realized another habit acquired from her mother. "Gabrielle hasn't eaten all day?" There was a hint of disbelief in the older woman's voice. With a wicked smile she added. "The poor child must be ready to drop."

Xena shared a laugh with her mother at the bard's expense. Both knew well the bard's healthy appetite.

As the laughter died away Xena took both of her Mother's hands. "Mother," Waiting for the smaller woman to meet her gaze. "you should not have come. But," she quickly added before the woman could protest. "I'm glad your here." Looking to her brother. "You too."

The Trial Day Two

Friends & Enemies

Hushed whispers filled the courtroom as once more people scurried searching for a space to call their own. While things appeared much as they had the previous day, the heaviness which lingered in the air the day before seemed to be missing. As Xena studied the steadily growing crowd of familiar and friendly faces, she wondered if perhaps their presence was the cause for the lighter mood.

Gabrielle occupied her chosen spot, Cyrene and Lila filled the seats on either side of her. Behind them sat Ephiny, Hercules, Iolaus and Toris. ‘Looking as regal as a royal escort.’ Thought the Warrior with a silent chuckle. Dismissing the thought she continued to search the crowd. Many of the familiar faces she had not expected to see again in her lifetime, certain not here. As Phineas took his customary place she turned to face him. With a hint of amusement she noted the broad smile spread over his normally serious features. "What are you so happy about?" she asked.

Grinning like a schoolboy Phineas answered. "Your not going to believe this. People have been arriving in droves to testify on you behalf." dropping a large bundle of scrolls before her. "Villagers, merchants, soldiers even royalty. All of them want to tell how the Warrior Princess saved them. It's wonderful. We've got Demos right where we want him."

"H'mm." replied the Warrior, solemnly.

"What?" asked Phineas, disappointed the woman did not share his enthusiasm. "Xena," grabbing a scroll from the pile and holding it before her. "This could well be your saving grace."

"We'll see." replied the Warrior guardedly.

The bailiff called the court to order, ending any further discussion on the matter. With practiced ease Judge Alerio took his chair, striking the marble gavel twice to signal court was in session. Once underway things processed much as they had the day before with the exception of Phineas leading the questioning rather than Demos.

Through out the morning Phineas called witness after witness. Many were villagers who sang praises of the Warrior Princess for saving their families and villages from whatever form of evil had befallen them. Soldiers told how she used her warrior skills to help them overcome raiders and invading armies. Many told of her healing skills, saving those who Hades would surely have claimed were it not for her aid.

Most who took the stand were familiar faces, some were strangers who the Warrior could not remember even meeting. Yet, they swore it was she who saved them. As the morning wore on those she called friends began to appear.

Moving gracefully to the witness stand, Princess Diana occupied the chair with an air of dignity. With elqulance and poise she answered each question while describing her relationship with the Warrior Princess. When Demos suggested perhaps the Warrior's motives were more monitory than moral the Princess's gentle face took on a hard edge.

"Never, not once did Xena ever ask for one single dinar.” declared the woman. “In fact, after our first meeting my father not only offered her a large sum of money, but the position of Captain of the Royal Guard." glaring at Demos. "She flatly refused both."

Xena smiled to herself as she listened to the exchange. ‘She’s finally learned to take control.’

Gabrielle’s thoughts were geared more to the Warrior Princess, as she sat staring at Xena's back. She knew King Lius had offered Xena money, but the warrior had never mentioned the captain's position. Still staring at the Warrior's back the bard couldn't help but wonder. "What else has she turned down over the last couple of years?"

Before leaving the stand Diana turned to Xena and in a voice heavy with restrained emotion spoke. “Xena has always responded without question to me and my father’s request for help. Risking her life and asking for nothing in return. She is a good person.” Locking eyes with the Warrior. “I am proud to call her my friend.”

Holding the Princess’s glaze the Warrior allowed a warm smile to cross her face as she nodded slightly.

When Demos had finished his questioning Flora moved to replace the Princess. While she was settling in Phineas began. "Have you known the defendant long?"

"All my life." she answered with a fond smile to the mighty warrior. "We grew up together."

"What was she like she then?" asked Phineas.

Allowing the smile to widened. "She was a good friend.”

"But, what was she like?" Pressed the Adovcate. "Did she have many friends, was she an outcast, did she cause trouble?"

Laughter shook the young woman as she answered. "If your expecting me to tell you she kicked puppies and pulled the wings off bugs, I'm sorry to disappoint you. She wasn't like that. Xena had this knack for knowing what people needed, she was always there ready to lend a hand. When we were younger she spent a great deal of time with village healer, she even talked about becoming one." Ducking her face as the smile faded. "Till the raiders came."

"Were you there when the raiders attacked the village?" asked Phineas.

"Yes," answered Flora adding quietly. "I was there."

"What happened after the raiders came?"

“Everything changed.” Flora cast a sorrowful glance toward her friend. “Everything.”

At Phineas’s insistence Flora described the attack on her home village. Reluctantly she also told of Lycues’s death.
As Flora spoke Xena glanced over her shoulder at her mother. Cyrene sat with her head held high, though tears streamed freely down her face. Sensing her daughter's stare she meet the blues eyes glazing at her. With great effort she offered a weak smile. Swallowing hard Xena returned the smile. While she and her mother tried to offer each other the only comfort they could, the warrior became aware of another who needed her support. From the look on his face it was obvious Toris was also reliving the pain and guilt of that faithful day as well. Xena turned her attention to her older brother, allowing the corners
of her mouth to raise slightly. He returned the gesture and both knew no matter what happened this time they would face it together. Flora's voice drew Xena's attention back to the front of the room.

"We moved away shortly after the raid.” continued Flora. “I didn't see Xena again for well over ten years." Looking to the warrior, with a sad chuckle. "Our reunion was in Xerxes's dungeon. After all those years apart, she was willing to risk her life to free me." There was no mistaking the admiration in the younger woman’s voice.

At Phineas's request the young woman told in great detail of Xerxes cruel reign and the corruption which led to the birth of the Black Wolf. She explained it was she not Xena who organized and led the rebellion against Xerxes. Making it quite clear Xena did not arrive until well after the rebellion had began. When Xena made her deal with Xerxes she was simply trying to help a friend, not overthrow a government. With some effort Demos forced her to admit it was Xena who killed Xerxes, but, quickly added it had been in a fair fight.

Hippocrate was next, he told of the Warrior's arrival at the healing temple during a local civil war. How her expert healing skills saved many of the wounded. Though he 'left out' the story of how she returned a certain bard back to the land of the living. Knowing the story would only stir up painful memories for the warrior. With great enthusiasm he told how she managed to convince the Thessialyain General to end the bloody war. During Demos's questioning the procutor asked how many Xena wounded or killed to 'convince' the general to end the war. Pride entered the young healer's voice as he informed the arrogant man the warrior had not raised her sword once while in the temple. Adding the Warrior had not even carried a sword most of the time she was there. Demos made no attempt to hide his disappointment at the young healer's reply.

As Hippocrates left the stand an unexpected witness took his place. All eyes turned to the rear of the room as a proud half man, half horse figure made his way forward. As he passed the warrior he nodded in greeting, she returned the gesture. Unable to fit his large frame into the witness stand, Tyldus stood to the side of it. Phineas greeted the King of the Centaurs reverently, before beginning his questioning. "King Tyldus would you please tell the court how you meet the defendant?"

Shifting his weight from one front leg to the other in Centaur custom, Tyldus stared down at the small man. "We met on the battlefield when she led her army against the Centaur Nation."

"So," began Phineas. "You were enemies?"

"Yes."

"Yet, you offered to come here today and speak on her behalf. Why?" questioned Phineas.

Shifting again Tyldus answered. "Because this woman is not my enemy. Nearly two summers ago she returned to Centaur country and though it nearly cost her life she managed to stop a war between the Centaurs and Amazons." Turning to the Warrior. "Were it not for her my son would have been killed for a murder he did not commit."

Even from across the room Xena could see the gratitude in the older Warrior's eyes. 'Sorry I wasn't there for him the next time, Tyldus.' Thought the Warrior as she sadly recalled the young Centuar's death.

After several more questions Phineas excused himself, allowing Demos to take his place. "Greetings, Sir." called Demos as he approached the Centaur.

“Hello.” replied the Centaur with a neutral tone. 'I haven't seen a smile that fake since my last visit to the market place.' he scoffed silently.

"You spoke of your first encounter with the warrior princess." stated Demos, the smile disappearing from his face. "Isn't it true she led her army against your people with the intention of destroying your entire nation?"

"Yes." answered Tyldus.
"And did she and her army not kill more than half of your soldiers?"
"Yes."
"Were any of those who died your friends?"
"Many." answered Tyldus solemnly.
Demos allowed his voice to raise slightly as he continued. "This woman." Motioning toward Xena. "Led an army against your nation, killed your people, killed your friends and yet you defend her. How can you forgive such atrocities? How can you offer your aid to help this woman escape justice," Leaning forward to glare at the Centaur. "And still call yourself a good leader?"

Anger flashed in the proud leader's eyes and for a moment Xena wondered if the court would need to find a new procutor.

Forcing his temper under control, Tyldus glared back at the man before answering. Raising his head slightly so he was looking down at the creature before him, Tyldus posed his own question. "Have you ever fought on a battlefield before?"

Taken back by the question, Demos stammered. "Wh..what? What does that have to do with anything?"

Feeling calmness settling in, Tyldus asked him again. "Have you?"

"Well, no...but I..."

"Then you would not understand." stated Tyldus, turning from the man as if he were no longer there.

Stunned by the Centaur's actions, Demos glanced to Alerio for help. Finding none there he turned back to the Centaur king. "That does not answer my question."

Studying the man for a moment, Tyldus seemed to reach a decision. "When Xena led her army against my people, she brought death and destruction to those I loved. I hated her with all my heart. When we faced each other on the battlefield we were enemies and had I the opporituty then I would have killed her." Pausing a heartbeat. "But, just as wars must begin they must also end. Thought it may take years those we called enemies must became friends or war will rear it's ugly head once more. The Xena who brought war to my homelands taught me the heavy cost of battle." Turning to the warrior. "And the Xena who came to stop a war taught me the value of peace."

Directing his attention to the crowd. "Were it not for her the Centaurs and Amazons would have gone to war. Many would have died needlessly." Focusing on Demos. "You speak of justice, if anyone has a right to demand justice it is the Centaurs. The blood of many paid for that right, but in Centaur law to kill one who has changed and made an attempt to right their wrongs is not justice. If you execute this woman it will not be justice, but revenge. It will be murder." Raising his head to look over the crowd. "Allow Xena to make peace with her past following the path she has chosen. I have known Xena the warlord and I now know the Xena who walks in her place. Xena the warlord is dead, let her stay buried," Slowly raising his arm toward Xena. "and accept the proud and honorable warrior who stands before you."

As the Centaur King’s words faded into an echo, silence took the courtroom in a strangle hold. None seemed willing to break it.

Finally, Demos turned to Alerio. "No further questions, Your Honor."

Alerio informed Tlydus he was free to go. As the large Centaur walked between the row of seated spectors, he spied a familiar face staring back at him. Ephiny allowed a smile to tug at the corners of her mouth at her father in law’s aknowledgement. The smile quickly faded as she heard the baliff call her name. Relucantly she rose and moved to the front of the room. Phineas and Demos to questioned her for nearly a candlemark about the incidents described by Tyldus and Hippocrate. With a bit of Amazon argoance she answered all of the questions confirming their stories. When Demos tryied to stop her from describing the warrior’s encounter with Valaska she veberally cut him off at the knees.

Listening to the details of the warrior's deeds, Cyrene felt a twinge of pride. It had happened before when she watched her daughter battle Draco. Looking back on the memory though, Cyrene knew it was not Xena's victory in battle which had caused a mother's heart to swell with pride, but instead her daughter's refusal to accept payment for her actions. "I don't want anything." She had said and with those words Cyrene knew her little girl was back. Where once she had cursed the Fates for turning her 'little one' into a monster, she now knew the monster was gone. In place of the warlord stood the young woman she called daughter. Perhaps one day the Fates would grant an old woman's wish and allow her daughter a chance to come home for good.

For nearly two candlemarks witnesses offered their support for the warrior. Witnesses came and went without much reaction those gathered in the courtroom. Yet, when Phineas called for his latest witness, an excited murmur spread through the crowd. Heads turned to search for the legend Phineas had named. Casting a weary glance at his compainions the large man rose to his feet and approached the witness stand.

“Greetings.” Called Phineas as he approached the witness.

“Greetings.” replied the man in a friendly tone.

“For the benefit of the court would you please state your name.” Asked Phineas

“I’m Hercules.” Answered the man

Once more an excited murmur swept through the crowd.

Phineas slowly began to pace. “Hercules do you know the defendant?”
“Yes.”
“How long have you known her?”

Shrugging slightly the large man replied. “Nearly five summers, now.”

Dreading the next question but knowing it was necessary to set his plan in motion, Phineas continued. “What was she like when you first met her?”

Stealing a quick glance at the Warrior Princess, Hercules hesitated for a moment. A reasuring smile greeted him. Taking a deep breath he turned back to Phineas. “She was a warlord.”

Once more whispered comments spread through the crowd. Phineas continued. “Did you and she ever oppose each other?”

“Yes.” Another glance at his friend. “We fought once.” A twinge of guilt tugged at his heart as he noted the sadness in the smile gracing the Warrior’s lovely features.

“What was the result of this encounter?” Asked Phineas

“Xena realized her life as a warlord was wrong.” Respect filled the large demi god’s voice as he continued. “She turned her back on it and walked away. Since then she has fought against evil instead of for it.”

“So she didn’t just walk away from her past she made an attempt to admend for it?” Asked Phineas.

“Yes.”

“How did she do this.” Questioned Phineas.

“Her old army attacked a village. I was trying to drive them off but, there were just to many of them.” Smiling at the Warrior. “Xena arrived and joined in the battle, together we managed to defeat them.”

“One instance of assisting in a fight hardly contitustes a change.” Stated Phineas. “Did she do anything else to provide herself?”

“Yes.” Answered Hercules, sitting a little straighter in his chair. There was no mistaking the pride and admiration in his voice as he began to relay the tale of how Xena helped him overcome Ares and how she helped free Pomethus after he was bound by the Gods. Her insistance to strike the sword blow which would break his chain, though she knew the act would mean her death. How she had come to his aid without question when
he was fasley accused of murdering his wife. In the end she not only proved his innocence but, helped to reveal the true murderer.

With great interest the courtroom listened carefully to the man’s tales. As his words painted a picture of the Warrior Princess many had never seen before. Many began to question their opinions of the warrior, even Phineas felt his own images of the woman slipping away to be replaced by a sense of respect.

As Hercules finished Phineas could think of nothing further to ask. Thanking him the advocate turned the floor over to Demos.

“You’ve painted a very saintly picture of the Warrior Princess, haven’t you?” Scoffed Demos as he approached the stand.

“I’ve told you the truth.” replied Hercules trying to keep a neutral tone.

“Yes,” agreed Demos as he positioned himself before the witness. “but you’ve only given us half the truth. Isn’t it true the first time you and the Warrior Princess met she ordered you killed.”

Glaring at the man, Hercules replied. “I told you we fought.”

“But that’s not exactly true now is it?” asked the proscutor. Not waiting for a response he turned to crowd as he contined. “In truth during your first encounter with the Warrior Princess you did not fight her at all. Didn’t she in fact trick a man into trying to kill you? And wasn’t that man your best friend? As he finished the question Demos turned to face the witness. As he met the hero’s glaze a smug smile graced his face.

With some effort Hercules fought the urge to knock the smug grin from the little man’s face. “Yes.” he finally replied.

“Tell me, Hercules have you and Xena ever been romantically involved?”

“Once, a long time ago.” answered Hercules.

“I see so she seduced your best friend into trying to kill you and then she seduced you into forgiving her. She must be quite a woman.” sneered the proscutor.

“Objection your Honor.” cried Phineas jumping to his feet. “Proscution is offering personal option.”

“I withdraw the comment your Honor.” replied Demos still smiling at Hercules. “No further questions your Honor.”

“Very well then.” Annouced Alerio. “This court will adjourn for one candlemark.” Lively chatter filled the courtroom as Alerio struck the gabvel to it’s base.

Gathering his scrolls Phineas turned to Xena. “Don’t worry it could have been worse.”

Without looking at him Xena replied. “It’s not over yet.”

Chapter 14

Visitors

Gabrielle skillfully dodged a small dark haired boy who was determinedly pursing a runaway ball across the street. Lila watched in amusement as her older sister not only managed to avoid the child, but kept from spilling the contents of the tray she carried.

"That was close." Laughed the bard.

They arrived at the jail without further incident. “I’m here to see, Xena.” Announced Gabrielle as she approached.

Accustomed to the bard's regular visits the guard did not question her as he turned to open the door. As they started to enter the familiar corridor, a young woman broke from the street crowd charging towards them. From her collection of armor and weapons it was obvious she bore the blood of an Amazon. Spying the woman warrior, the guard reached for his sword. Glancing from side to side he expected to find an army of Amazons descending upon the jail. To his relief he found only one.
"Gabrielle!" called the warrior as she drew closer. "Wait!"

Moving forward to meet the approaching warrior, Gabrielle studied her face trying to put a name with it. She remembered meeting the young woman before during the trouble with Valaska. "Hello, Maya." she said as the Amazon stopped before her.

Bowing slightly the Amazon spoke quickly. "Queen Ephiny needs to speak with you."

"Can't it wait?" Pleaded the Bard. "I was just about to take Xena her lunch."

"Queen Ephiny sent me to find you and bring you to her immediately." Announced the Amazon with an air of authority. "She said it was important."

‘Yeah, with Amazon’s everything is important.’ Sighed the bard silently. Looking from the tray to the open door and back, Gabrielle finally nodded. "Alright, I'll be right there." Turning to Lila. "Lila would you mind taking this to Xena? Tell her I'll be back before court starts."

"Me?" asked Lila, unable to hide the shock and hint of dismay at her sister's request.

"Please." begged the bard. "By the time I get back it'll be cold."

Eyeing the tray for a moment, Lila shrugged. "Well, I..."

"Great," answered the bard, handing the tray over. "Thanks, Sis." A playful slap on the shoulder from her older sister nearly caused Lila to drop the meal. "I won't be long." Gabrielle informed her before spinning to face the Amazon. "Come on, we don't want to keep Ephiny waiting now do we?"

Watching them disappear into the crowd, Lila jumped slightly as the guard spoke to her.

"You going in or not?" he growled.

Glancing from the tray to the guard and back again Lila sighed heavily. "Yeah, I guess so."

As they made their way down the corridor Lila fought to rein in her fears. 'What am I so nervous about.' she thought. 'It's not like Xena would hurt me. After all she is Gabrielle's best friend. Yeah, and the biggest, meanest warrior you've ever meet.’ The truth was the big warrior did frighten her, she was just so intimidating. ‘I'll just drop off the tray, deliver Gab's message and leave.'

Turning the corner Lila felt a chill run down her spine as she realized just how cold and dank a prison cell could be. Xena rose from the cot to meet them, watching closely as the guard unlocked the door and held it open for Lila to enter.

Forcing a cheerful smile the younger woman approached the warrior. "I've brought you something to eat."

Searching behind the young farm girl as she took the tray, concern crossed the warrior's face. "Where is Gabrielle?"

"Ephiny sent for her. She said to tell you she would be back before court started." answered Lila, struggling to keep the nervousness from her voice.

A shout from the hall caused both women to look up. The guard shouted back a reply then closed the door turning the lock.

"What are you doing?” Cried Lila charging toward the door. “Let me out!"

"I'll be right back." answered the guard as he disappeared around the corner.

"Wait! Come back!" called Lila not caring if the despair her voice was noticeable.

Xena moved to the cot sitting down with her back to the wall. Using her crossed legs as a table she rested the tray upon them. "Don't worry he'll be back."

Lila turned to the Warrior with a nervous smile. "I'm sure he will." Xena watched the young woman study the flag stones. 'She's as innocent as Gabrielle was before she took to the road.' A sense of guilt struck the Warrior with the thought. Aloud she called to the nervous young woman. "You can sit down if you'd like." With a crook smile she added. "I won't bite."

Laughter escaped the younger woman, then stopped abruptly. Had Xena just made a joke. 'No.' She thought. 'Xena doesn't make jokes. She's a Warrior, they don't have a sense of humor. Do they?'

Sensing the girl's discomfort, Xena attempted to ease her concerns. "Lila, it's all right. Just relax. Have a seat."

Lila moved toward the cot, forcing a smile. "I'm relaxed, really." Timidly sitting on the edge as far from the Warrior as possible.

"Hum,” smirked the Warrior. “’bout as relaxed as that statue of Athena in town square."

Lila's head snapped toward the Warrior a look of shock and amazement graced her freckled face. She'd done it again. Another joke. Gabrielle had mentioned the Warrior's dry sense of humor during her last visit but, Lila had just chalked it up to her sister's overactive imagination.

Xena leaned toward her as if sharing some important secret. "It's okay to laugh." Smiling as she sat back. Lila smiled back inspite of herself. This was a side of Xena she had never seen and frankly she liked it.

Picking over the food Xena spoke without looking up. "You don't like me very much do you?" It was asked as calmly as one would ask for salt at a dinner table.

Lila's mouth fell open and she blinked several times not certain she had heard the question correctly. Xena sat quietly, waiting for her to answer.

Closing her mouth with a snap Lila turned to the floor hoping for an answer. Finding none there she tried to form one on her own. "No, I don't...." Her gaze met and locked with cool blue eyes which froze her in mid sentence. There was no way she could lie with those eyes boring into her. Swallowing hard she tried again. "Yes." Quickly she added. "At first, I mean...Well when Gab ran off to follow you I thought okay fine she'll meet up with Xena and Xena will tell her what a fool she is and send her home." Looking back to the floor, she continued. "But, days turned to weeks and weeks to months. Still she didn't come home. Then she started sending me messages about the adventures the two of you were having." Chuckling slightly. "For awhile I thought she was just making them up. I figured maybe she'd found a job in a tavern somewhere, because she was to embarrassed to come home. But, then stories started to drift in with travelers. Stories about the ex-warlord who was helping villagers and the pleasant girl who traveled with her." With a heavy sigh the young woman's body seemed to slump. "That's when I knew she wasn't coming back. I was angry with her for a long time after that. When she finally did come home I'm afraid I didn't give her a very warm welcome."

Concern furrowed the Warrior's brow. Gabrielle had never mentioned any trouble between her and Lila. Making a mental note to question the Bard about it later, the large woman turned her attention to the farm girl.

"I was jealous." admitted Lila. "Jealous of Gabrielle for getting out and seeing the world. A world I'd never know and" Raising her eyes to met Xena's. "And I was jealous of you."

"Me?" questioned the warrior.

"Yes, all my life I've had Gabrielle there to look up to, to look after me. Then she was gone." Laughter filled the small cell. "I never knew how much I missed her silly stories till she wasn't there to tell them anymore." There was a sadness in her eyes as she spoke.

Xena understood completely, life without Gabrielle was unimaginable. She remembered how quiet and lonely the days had been when Gabrielle decided to return home. The silence had nearly driven her crazy, till one day she found herself on the road to Potodaia.

Lila stood and walked to the far wall. Finally she turned to Xena. "Why didn't you send her back?"

Xena pondered the question for so long Lila wondered if she would answer. Finally the Warrior turned to her and said simply. "I needed her."

"Why?” asked Lila in disbelief. “She didn't know anything. She couldn't fight, heck I could take her."

Xena smiled to herself. 'Maybe at one time, Lila.' She thought. 'But, not now.' Xena rose and moved to stand before the girl.

'She's so tall.' marveled Lila.

"Gabrielle gave me hope when I had none. She offered me friendship when the rest of the world wanted to give me the business end of a sword. Then she became my family when I had given up hope of ever having one. Besides," She smiled crookedly. "I like her silly stories." Warm laughter filled the cold cell as the two shared fond thoughts of the bard they both held dear.

Then Lila did something which surprised herself. Without warning she threw her arms around the warrior's waist embracing her tightly. Stunned by the action Xena stood stone still. Lila started to doubt the wisdom of her actions and was about to pull away when she felt Xena's strong arms gently return the embrace.

“Thank you.” whispered the farm girl.

“For what?” asked the Warrior.

“For keeping her safe.”

“Your welcome.” answered the warrior softly.

After a moment Lila released the large woman, stepping back to gaze up at her. Xena greeted her with a rare warm smile. Suddenly Lila realized the woman before her seemed less threatening. Instead of a fearsome warrior she saw a warm, gentle soul. For once she understood why her sister was drawn to this woman. This was a side of Xena she would not have believed existed.

"Lila," began the Warrior in a serious tone. "the next few days are going to be hard on Gabrielle. Especially if they....if things don't work out the way she is hoping." Pausing a moment. "She going to need you."

"I know."

"Time to leave." called the guard as he stepped into view. Xena and Lila glanced at him wearily.

Xena touched Lila's arm lightly waiting for her to meet her gaze before speaking. "Take care of yourself, Lila."

"I will." answered the young girl smiling warmly. "and I'll look out of Gab."

Xena returned the smile. "I know you will."

Lila offered her hand. Xena grabbed it in warrior fashion at the forearm.

"Good bye, Xena." there was a sadness in the young woman's eyes.

"Goodbye, Lila." answered the Warrior.

Releasing the offered hand Lila left the cell without looking back. Once she was clear of the door, the guard resecured it and disappeared around the corner without a word. As the guard disappeared around the corner a hooded figure stepped into view.

Cautiously Xena watched the new arrival as he made his way to the door. “Tsk, tsk, hardly fitting accommodations for a warrior princess.”

“Kirilus.” questioned the warrior.

Throwing back the hood to reveal a battle scared face Kirilus smiled at her. “You remembered. I’m honored.”

“What do you want?” asked the warrior folding her arms across her chest.

“Come now Xena is that anyway to talk to an old friend.” scolded the man. “I mean after all the trouble I went to to arrange this little meeting you could be a little more cordial.”

“What are you talking about?” asked the warrior stiffing visibly.

“Well you don’t think all of this happened by accident do you?” asked the man.

Xena’s eyes narrowed to small slits. “Your responsible for this trial?”

“Yes.” sneered Kirilus. “You see I’ve spent the last year traveling all of Greece to find your enemies and victims. Which is was not an easy task I might add, since most of both are dead. You have a nasty habit of killing those who cross you.”

“Not all.” There was no mistaking the disgust in the warrior’s voice.

“Yes,” laughed Kirilus. “well you had your chance to kill me, but you let it slip away. That was a mistake Xena.”

“I won’t make it twice.” replied the warrior.

“Your threats do not concern me, Xena. Either you’ll spend the rest of your life in prison or they’ll send you to the gallows. Personally I’m betting on the gallows. But either way I win.”

“Why are you doing this Kirilus? I took your army in a fair fight, what do you hope to gain?”

“Why revenge of course.” answered the former warlord. “Revenge against you for humiliating me in front of my army and revenge against Ares for using me as a pawn.” anger began to creep into his voice. “You see Ares used me to build an army for you. Once it was built he cast me away like a piece of garbage. And since Ares is a God there
is no way I could hurt him at least not physically. So instead I decided to take away the one thing he wants more than anything.”

“Me?” questioned the warrior.

“Exactly.” answered the man joyfully. “See I’m going to get back at Ares by destroying you.”

“The perfect plan.” sarcasm dipped from the warrior’s words.

“I thought so.” agreed Kirilus. “Now if you’ll excuse me I have some business to attend to.” Starting to walk away he paused and turned back to the warrior. “Oh and one more thing. Hurting Ares is only part of the plan, I intend to make you suffer as well.”

Feeling the hairs raise on the back of her neck, Xena took a step forward. “Suffer how?”

“Well,” began Kirilus nonchanley. “Athens is a big city full of unsavory, criminal types. You just never know when you might lose something or rather someone important to you.” A wicked grin played over the man’s face.

Without realizing it Xena leaped at the barred wall. “Kirilus, I don’t know what you are planning, but if you harm any of my family or friends. I will find you and what Ares might do to you is nothing compared to what I’ll do.”

“Xena, your not going to hurt me, your going to die.” Walking away, she could hear his mocking laughter echoing in the hall.

Chapter 15

The Price of Friendship

Gabrielle and the Amazon were making their way along the city streets when a familiar figure came sprinting toward them. Stepping between the approaching man and her queen the Amazon reached for her sword. “No, Maya.” said Gabrielle as she stayed the warrior’s hand. “It’s all right. He’s a friend.”

Not looking completely convinced the Amazon relutcutenly moved aside. Grinning from ear to ear Homer stopped before the bard. “I was hoping I’d find you before we had to go back. Do you want to go to the tavern with me?”

“I’m sorry, Homer.” answered the young woman. “Ephiny wants to see me, that’s were I’m heading now.”

“The Amazon Queen?” asked Homer excitement crept into his voice.

“Yes, the Amazon Queen.” replied Gabrielle.

“H’mm, Gabrielle do you think I could come with you? I mean I’ve never really spoke with an Amazon before, well except for that belief time yesterday at the tavern. I mean a chance to speak with an Amazon Queen doesn’t come along everyday.”

‘More often than you realize dear Homer.’ laughed Gabrielle to herself. “Well, I guess it will be okay.”

“Great.” answered the young man, falling in beside her.

Several blocks later a woman’s scream echoed in a nearby alley, abruptly halting the trio. Without a word Gabrielle and Maya charged into the alleyway with Homer close behind. Several men formed a loose circle near the far end of the alley. All were armed and most had their weapons draw using them to poke and prod at something in the center of the circle.

“Excuse me.” called Gabrielle as she stopped behind the closest man.

“What?!” growled the man as he turned to face her. Studying the bard from head to toe a wicked grin crossed his face. “Well look what we have here boys.”

As the man moved Gabrielle caught a glimpse of the object of their attention. Kneeling in the center of the circle was Cyrene. Numerous cuts and bruises covered the older woman’s face and arms.

“Aren’t we lucky. Not only do we have the warrior princess’s mammy but her best friend as well.” Glancing back at his companions. “This should be fun.”

Anger seized the bard as she stared at the injured woman. As the man turned back to face her, Gabrielle struck him across the face with her staff. Without a word he spun falling face first to the ground. Without looking away she called over her shoulder. “Homer, go get some help!”

“Right.” answered the young man as he dashed out of sight.

The others moved forward to take the place of their fallen friend. Readying herself for the attack Gabrielle caught movement from the corner of her eye. Maya drew her sword as she moved to her queen’s side.

Raising a sword over his head one of the men charged forward. As Gabrielle met his attack another man charged the Amazon and the battle began. While the Amazon and her queen fought, Cyrene managed to crawl to the safety of a nearby wall. Gabrielle dropped her third attacker and turned searching for another. Unfortunately she found one. Half a dozen men appeared at the entrance of the alley, it was obvious they were there to reinforce their friends.

Dropping the last of the first batch of attackers, Maya moved in front of Gabrielle. “Run, my Queen. I will cover you.”

“No.” Answered the bard sternly. “I won’t leave you.”

Protecting each other’s back the Bard and the Amazon battled the new arrivals. Three of the attackers lay at their feet as two more moved in. Gabrielle noticed the third stayed back reaching for something behind his back. An onslaught of sword strike forced her attention back to the man before her. For a brief moment a whistling sound filled the air and from behind her Gabrielle heard a soft moan. Dispatching the man before her, Gabrielle turned in time to see Maya stagger as she grasped for the
arrow protruding from her side. Before the Amazon could regain her balance the man before her drove his sword deep in her gut. Placing a foot against her chest he forcefully yanked the weapon free while pushing her back. She was dead before she struck the ground.

A blood curling scream mixed with horror and anger filled the alley as Gabrielle charged the man. In short order she beat him to the ground. Once the man was down Gabrielle turned to find Cyrene staggering towards her, behind the older woman the archer raised his bow. “No!” Screamed the Bard charging forward. In one swift motion she shoved Cyrene to the side, as her body contacted with the older woman’s she felt a piercing pain in her left side. Unable to stand she dropped to her knees. In
disbelief the Bard stared down at the shaft protruding from her side.

“Gabrielle!” cried Cyrene.

Throwing the bow to the side the archer drew his sword as he stalked toward the injured woman. Gabrielle watched helplessly as he raised the weapon, preparing to sever her head.

Grabbing Gabrielle’s staff Cyrene leap to her feet. A fearless scream from the older woman cause the swordsman to pause for just a moment. It was all the time Cyrene needed to drive end of the staff deep into the man’s gut. With a loud grunt he staggered back several steps. Before he could regain his balance the older woman brought the solid piece of wood down upon his head, dropping him to the ground.

Shouts of alarm from the street caught Cyrene’s attention. Ephiny, Iolaus, Meleager along with several Amazons and Centaurs were racing towards her. Ignoring the approaching figures she turned her attention to the wounded Bard. Dropping the staff she moved to kneel before the young woman. “Gabrielle?” she called softly reaching for the younger woman.

“Nice moves.” Laughed the bard weakly, then she collapsed into Cyrene’s arm.
