Thanks a lot to Amit Bhaumik for the pictures you see here.
I owe a great deal to Akemi Kishita. Though I was unable to contact her, seeing as how she's off the net, her wonderful page on Zyuranger allowed me to fill in some of the gaps in my summary.

Kyoryuu Sentai Zyuranger
(Dinosaur TaskForce Beast Rangers)

Back in ancient times, dinosaurs and humans co-existed. The humans worshipped five Shugozyus (Beast Protectors). Then the evil witch Bandora attacked. The five Shugozyus rose up against her and trapped her and her henchmen: Griffozer, the warrior; Priprican, the monster-maker; and Tottpatt and Bukkbakk, the oddballs. The Shugozyus then sent them, inside a magical space dumpster (for lack of a better word) to the Planet Nemesis. But the humans were worried they would return, so they chose the best warriors from their tribes and placed them in suspended animation. The white wizard Barza was chosen to safeguard them.

It is now present day. A Japanese shuttle is sent to Planet Nemesis to explore the world. When they land, the two adults get out in their spacesuits and accidentally release Bandora and her henchmen. Bandora proclaims to finish what she started, and attacks Earth. Bandora meets up with Barza, now an apartment owner. They fight, with Bandora the winner. Barza goes to the hidden sanctuary beneath his apartment and frees the five warriors in suspended animation, except for Geki, TyrannoRanger, who is locked in when Barza breaks the key. The freed four go to fight Bandora, and they get walloped on, until Geki is freed by the giant totems in the sanctuary. Geki rescues his teammates, Barza gives the team their coins, and the five transform by calling out "Dinobuckler!" while holding their Dinobucklers in front of them. They are now the Kyoryuu Sentai Zyuranger:

"TyrannoRanger, Geki!"
"MammothRanger, Goushi!"
"TriceraRanger, Dan!"
"TigerRanger, Boi!"
"PteraRanger, Mei!"

They proceed to beat up on Grifforzer and his Golem Hei (Golem Soldiers), but the Japanese shuttle, which Bandora shrunk and used as bait, is captured by Dora Titan, a really big, mean-looking guy who is too big for the Zyurangers to fight. Eventually, the Zyurangers do get the shuttle back, and Dora Titan is destroyed by the Shugozyu Tyrannosaurus. The Zyurangers retrieve the Weapons of Legend, and Geki brings the team together after a vision to revive the other Shugozyus and form Daizyujin (Great Beast God), a form of God, and their main fighter after the Dora Monsters have grown. Unfortunately, Bandora gets her hands on a pair of dinosaur eggs, and plans to destroy them, weaking Daizyujin, since it is based on the dinosaurs. In the ensuing battle, the box containing them is lost at sea.

Now, for the standard plot twist: turns out Geki has an older brother who is also in hibernation. His name is Burai, and he's got a really bad score against Geki. When Burai was seven, baby Geki was adopted by the king of the Yamato tribe. Later, Burai and Geki's real father led a revolt against the king, and died at the king's hand. Burai saw this, and swore revenge, both on the king, and on his heir: Geki. Burai has been in suspended animation all this time as well. A young boy named Ryota sees Burai as his hero because Burai had saved him from a falling rock back in prehistoric days, and when the prophesized day comes, he successfully revives Burai. Little does he know that Burai not only still hates Geki, but has his own Zyuranger powers as DragonRanger. Bandora strikes an alliance with Burai, giving him the sword Hellfriede. Grifforzar's wife, Lami, is also revived after waiting 65 million years for her husband. Together, Grifforzar, Burai, and Lami seemingly destroy Daizyujin, using the recovered box of dinosaur eggs as bait (though, in the process, the eggs are again lost at sea). During the celebration on the moon at Bandora's base, Burai tries to kill Bandora, but fails and is sent to Earth as a result. There, a young woman in a white cloth appears, calling herself Klotho, and presenting Burai with Zyusouken (Beast Symphony Sword), some kind of flute/sword combo. She also presents a riddle: he only has roughly 30 hours to live. Burai plays Zyusouken, and the Shugozyu Dragon Caesar appears. Pleased, he wreaks havoc on the city, and the Zyurangers are powerless . . . until the Shugozyus return! Turns out they were only rejuvenating in the lava they fell into. While the Shugozyus Tyrannosaurus and Dragon Caesar fight, so do Geki and Burai, until Geki beats Burai. Meanwhile, Daizyujin has formed and is kicking the tar out of Dragon Caesar. Daizyujin tells Geki to kill Burai, but Geki cannot bring himself to do it. Burai takes his chance and tries to kill Geki through the back, but when their eyes meet, Burai finds that he cannot do the deed. Burai's ensuing tears destroys Hellfriede. Burai joins the Zyurangers, and his Shugozyu Dragon Caesar is revealed to bond with Juumammoth, Saber-Tiger, and Triceratops to form Gorryujin (Armored Dragon God). Soon, Burai retreats back to the Lapseless Room, where time does not pass.

A crisis occurs when Bandora discovers new clay, which can be used to form stronger Golem Hei. Geki embarks on a quest to find the Thunder Slingers, which can defeat the new Golem Hei. Burai senses Geki's turmoil, and rushes to help him. After an encounter with Zyukishin (Beast Knight God), the seventh Shugozyu, also known as King Brachion, the two recover the weapons. They are then relayed to the others. Thunder Slingers can also combine with the Ranger Gun to become the Ranger Slingers.

Eventually, in a cleverly orchestrated scheme, Bandora resummons Satan from hell. The Shugozyus are trashed by Satan's creature Satan Frank. Burai is forced to tell his secret to the other Zyurangers, but Bandora also hears this secret. Eventually, the Shugozyus return, and, when the Daizyujin and Dragon Caesar combine to form Zyutei Daizyujin (Beast Emperor Great Beast God), the Zyurangers destroy Satan Frank, and when Zyutei Daizyujin combines with Zyukishin, the seven Shugozyus combine to form Kyuukyoku Daizyujin (Ultimate Great Beast God). This, amazingly, is the original form of God. Together, they defeat Satan and send him back to hell.

The rangers eventaully gain the dinosaur eggs back, and they are placed inside King Brachion to incubate. Meanwhile, Bandora, ecstatic at the thought of destroying a Zyuranger, starts concentrating her attacks on Burai. To accomplish this, she creates Dora Gansaku, who poses as Dragon Caesar. Burai comes out of the Lapseless Room to investigate, and Bandora, following his energy, discovers the Lapseless Room and destroys it. Though Dora Gansaku is destroyed, Burai must die. As it turns out, though, Burai had actually already died of natural causes while in hibernation, and Klotho had resurrected him because his powers would help control Dragon Caesar, which was needed to reform Kyuukyoku Daizyujin. Burai passes on Zyusouken and his Dragon Armor on to Geki.

A kid in a white robe with white hair appears to the Zyurangers and kidnaps four children. When he shows himself to Bandora, she recognizes him as her son, Kai,resurrected by Satan. Kai comes to Earth, changes to a T2-type armor, and boards a huge robot called Dora Talos. He, along with the four hypnotized children, pilot Dora Talos and lays waste the city. Meanwhile, the podiums in the Zyuranger base provide Barza with a book, scripted in ancient language. When he translates it, he learns that the two eggs inside King Brachion are the last pair on Earth. He stops the Zyurangers as they are about to summon Zyukishin. Unfortunately, he shows up anyway, and Kyuukyoku Daizyujin destroys Dora Talos. Bandora causes Zyukishin to sink below the ground and get trapped. Back at the base, Barza reveals that he learned from the ancient book that Bandora, originally a queen of the Dal tribe in ancient days, sold her soul to Satan after her son Kai got killed by a dinosaur. Bandora resummons Satan from hell, and together they resurrect Dora Talos. This new Dora Talos, piloted by Kai only, ravage Daizyujin and Dragon Caesar, and Bandora captures them too. In the midst of despair, Geki's Zyusouken floats up, revealing a vision of Burai. He shows them a door, and says the Shugozyus are held there. Geki, Dan, and Goushi go inside, tied by a rope which Mei and Boi guard outside the door. Geki and the others are ambushed by dead Doramonsters which they cannot touch. Geki and Dan fall into a hole, while Goushi tries to pull them back up. The rope snaps on the outside, and Mei and Boi try to hold it back, with the aid of Barza. When Geki and Dan are brought back up, Geki finds Daizyujin, Dragon Caesar, and Zyukishin inside small bubbles, which Geki breaks. The Shugozyus return, and the Zyurangers destroy Dora Talos and Satan. Kai comes back to Bandora Palace, where he dies in his mother's arms. When Bandora cries, she loses her powers. Daizyujin sends Bandora and the others off inside a new container which looks like a vase. Their mission completed, the Zyurangers hop on a cloud and go up to heaven, where their Shugozyus greet them.

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers Season 1

Two American astronauts land on the moon. They discover a dumpster and accidently release the witch Rita Repulsa and her henchmen: Goldar, the warrior; Finster, the monster-maker; and Squatt and Baboo, the oddballs (see a resemblence?). Rita chooses to celebrate her release from a 10,000 year imprisonment by taking over the nearest planet: Earth. Zordon, an intergalactic being caught in a time warp, and Alpha 5, his robotic sidekick, notice Rita's escape and choose five warriors to take on the five Power Coins. Though they are reluctant at first, they do morph when threatened by Rita's putty patrol.

Jason Lee Scott: Red Ranger
Zachary Taylor: Black Ranger
Billy Cranston: Blue Ranger
Trini Kwan: Yellow Ranger
Kimberly Hart: Pink Ranger

The five now beat up the putties, and call on their mighty Dinozords, which can form the Megazord, to defeat Goldar, who retreats. They agree to keep their new powers and defend the Earth. Later, Billy creates wrist communicators to teleport and communicate with the Command Center. They also receive Power Weapons, which were apparently an ancient secret.

Then a new kid, Tommy Oliver, shows up and beats Jason to a draw in a local karate match. Rita chooses him to take on the Green Power Coin and become the Green Ranger. Tommy is brainwashed, and with his powers, he is able to break into the Command Center, put a virus into Alpha, and break Zordon's link to this dimension. He proceeds to beat up on the Power Rangers several times, later with his new sword, the Sword of Darkness. He also kidnaps Jason and forcing him to fight both Goldar and Green Ranger without any powers. When Jason is saved, a new warrior, Scorpina, debuts and also fights the Power Rangers. During an eclipse, the Megazord falls into a pit of lava, apparently destroyed. Green Ranger is given the Dragon Dagger and calls forth Dragonzord. Meanwhile, Alpha recovers Zordon, and Zordon recovers the Dinozords. Red and Green Rangers fight, and Red Ranger destroys the Sword of Darkness, destroying Rita's spell. Tommy chooses to join the Power Rangers. His Dragonzord can bond with the Mastadon, Triceratops, and Saber-Toothed-Tiger to form the Dragonzord Battle Mode.

Rita discovers a new batch of clay that can make stronger putties. Jason and Tommy are sent on a quest to find new weapons. They fight Titanus, the Carrier Zord, and eventually do recover the weapons.

Rita summons the powerful beings Meutytis and Lokar to destroy the Power Rangers. They are transported to the Island of Illusion, where they must face their worst fears. They conquer them, regain their powers, and, combining the Megazord and Dragonzord, form the MegaDragonzord, which destroys Meutytis. Then, with Titanus, they form the Ultrazord, the strongest zord at the time, and strike Lokar. He is not destroyed, but is severely hurt and retreats.

Rita creates the Green Candle, which will drain Tommy's Green Ranger powers when it burns out, and transfer them to Rita. The rangers fight to destroy the Green Candle, but ultimatly they fail. Tommy gives his Power Coin to Jason, thereby insuring that Rita does not get the Green Ranger powers.

Rita sends her palace down to Earth and summons Cyclopsis, an evil zord under Goldar's control. The rangers destroy Cyclopsis once, but with Lokar's help, Rita recreates it. The new Cyclopsis wreaks havoc, burying Titanus and causing major damage to the other zords. But the rangers are able to find a weakness: Cyclopsis cannot adapt rapidly enough to different enemies. Exploiting this weakness, the rangers destroy Cyclopsis. Zordon, seeing the bravery the rangers put out, offers them a chance to give up their powers, but not one chooses to.

During a Parent Day, the Dramomonster kidnaps Angel Grove High's parents, including the rangers' parents. The monster also puts a spell on Billy, making him retreive the Dragon Dagger. He gives it to Goldar, who then summons the Dragonzord and wreaks havoc on Angel Grove. The rangers are then presented with an ultimatum: surrender the Power Coins, or the parents will stay Rita's prisoners. The rangers choose to surrender the coins, but Goldar double-crosses them and takes the coins and keeps the parents. Now, only the defunct Green Power Coin is left. The rangers summon Tommy and Zordon re-energizes his Power Coin. Green Ranger leaves to fight Goldar for the Power Coins and the Dragon Dagger, and succeeds. He controls the Dragonzord in a fight against Goldar and Scorpina. Then, he tries to grab the box containing the Power Coins, and penetrates the forcefield surrounding them. He is teleported back to the Command Center, and the rangers get their coins back, at the expense of Tommy, who has collapsed. Dramomonster makes the other rangers attack Pink Ranger, who cannot hold on. As it turns out, Tommy has absorbed the energy from the forcefield that surrounded the Power Coins, so he now has his powers again. He rescues Pink Ranger, and they defeat the Dramomonster. Tommy rejoins the team, but it is unknown how long his powers will last.

Interesting Facts

  • Doomsday Parts 1-2 adapted the last four episodes of Zyuranger. After that, no more Zyuranger footage existed. However, Saban managed to shoot new scenes, in the same fashion as Sentai, so it seemed that the fight scenes were in fact shown in Zyuranger. In this way, Saban managed to keep Power Rangers going for a lot more episodes before switching to Dairanger footage.

  • If you're a Power Rangers fan, then you've heard the jokes about Trini's 'mysterious transformation'. Quite ironically, the yellow Zyuranger, TigerRanger, is a boy named 'Boi'.

  • Dai Satan (pronounced sah-TAHN, despite what common sense might say), the most powerful entity of evil, was altered into a third-rate, no-good, ignored guest star named Lokar. For some reason this is funny to me.

  • The Thunder Slingers were never given a name on Power Rangers. Because of their one close-up shot on Power Rangers, in which the name 'Zyuranger' is very visible, they have unofficially earned the name 'Zyuranger Slingers'. The term 'Zyuranger' is also visible (at times) on the Power Bow and the Power Morpher.

  • To the best of my knowledge, Zyuranger marked only the third time that mecha based on animal forms were utilized. The first was the Land Lion in Liveman. The second time was in Jetman, where the planes took on the shapes of different birds. This tradition would continue with Dairanger, Kakuranger, and Ohranger. While Carranger and Megaranger had no animal-based mecha, Gingaman now sports Gin Sei Juu, which are patterned after their own animal "spirit". In addition, Zyuranger was the first show to have living, thinking creatures as mecha. Before this show, all the mecha were truly that - mecha.

  • While I don't know for sure, I am rather certain that Zyuranger actually recycled the cockpits from Jetman, the previous show. All it takes is one look at the Jetman cockpit to be convinced of this.
