A Canadian's Opinion: A Review of Dawson's Creek
-Geoff Roberts-
As a Canadian we are used to seeing very gritty dramas. For years
it's been a staple of our TV viewing. Many of these dramas have been
critically acclaimed such as Road To Avonlea, ENG, Cold Squad and Due
South. What do all of them have in common with the recent addition of
the
American, Dawson's Creek? Put simply they have a high level of writing
and
sophistication to them. All of them are uniquely special and in this
world
of tawdry and trashy television it's a welcome addition.
I turned on my television late Sunday night to find a wonderful
surprise.
Like a child opening a very great Christmas present I was shocked at
what
I found! A very good drama with excellent acting and writing. Dawson's
Creek for me as a student of acting and directing was exactly what I was
looking for. It was bang on as the performances were terrific and very
brilliant. Really not a clunker in the cast, unless of course you count
Joshua Jackson who seemed to struggle during the first episode with
getting comfortable with his role--but alas that all falls to the weigh
side when he really gets going in emotionally charged scenes.
Even more surprising was the performances given by Katie Holmes
(Ice Storm) and Michelle Williams. Both possess a creative energy and
aura
that is unsurpassed in most actors their age. They bring a certain level
of emotional creativity to the role. Each has a wonderful charisma and
can
change acting styles easily. Katie especially is this way as one minute
she can appear very innocent and full of shyness. The next she can be a
michevious little s--t when she plots to get Dawson away from Jen. As
for
good ole Dawson himself. James Van Der Beek is a good actor but judging
from the first episode he seems not to have a lot of energy creatively
and
lacks chemistry with Katie Holmes the girl who in the show he is
supposedly to have loved. You just really don't feel that they've known
each other for 15 years do you? But over the last little while he has
proven himself as an actor in very emotionally charged scenes.
As for the writing it's brilliant but with everything there comes a
catch. The story about the young boy, Pacey and the teacher just doesn't
work for me. For one thing can anybody be that naive to go after
something
they knew wasn't right. Most kids wouldn't and besides in most areas
where
we live this teacher would be a criminal. Instead she looks more and
more
in the episodes to be a person who is lonely rather than someone who is
a
predator.
Dawson's Creek is a great drama that deserves all the applause it can
get. Here's hoping word of mouth in Canada will spread.
