Victor: Ahhh! Mac, I'm shot.
Li Ann: Mac. Mac. I think my leg is broken.

Li Ann: My god.
Mac: What?
Li Ann: Adanine Azzuro's in town.
Mac: Really?
Victor: Who's Adanine Azzuro?
Mac: Are you kidding?
Li Ann: She apprenticed the late Versace.
Mac: Then, bam, moves off to Norway, starts her own line. You know her spring collection
     started this whole Norwegian look. Now she only works in furs.
Li Ann: Did the police catch the clowns yet?
Mac: Yeah, right -- little too busy investigating their own.
Victor: What's that supposed to mean?
Li Ann: I was reading that.
Mac: Not any more. You gotta get past the sports page just once in a while, Vic.
Victor: Andy.
Li Ann: You know him?
Victor: Once upon a time.
Mac: I thought only I hung with criminals.
Victor: Shut up, Mac.
Director: Sit down, Vic. It's show and tell time. Meet Chantelle.
Mac: Wish I could.
Director: Well, be careful what you wish for, Mr. Ramsay, because the gods just might grant it
         to you -- Chantelle is closely identified with that fashion movement known as the
         Norwegian look. In fact, Chantelle is going to be the star of the Azzuro show. And
         your mission, Mac -- and I just got a hunch you'll be happy to accept it -- is to
         shadow her 24 hours a day.
Mac: Sure. Why?
Director: Well, by signing such a major endorsement deal for fur, she's garnered more death
         threats than fan mail.
Mac: People sure are testy about the fur thing. Animals would skin humans if the shoe changed
     hooves.
Li Ann: Or paws.
Mac: Ah, whatever.
Li Ann: You think the clowns are linked to the death threats.
Director: Well, they've certainly got their pantaloons in a knot about people who wear fur.
         Oh, and, Mac, I want you to keep Chantelle at your apartment.
Mac: Oh, ho, ho, Christmas is coming a little early this year.
Director: Well, don't get too excited. Her boyfriend knows everything that goes on around here.
Mac: At the agency?
Director: Oh, he's a very powerful guy.
Li Ann: How powerful is he?
Director: Well, if you lay a hand on her, we'll probably end up calling you Stumpy.
Li Ann: What am I supposed to do?
Director: Nothing physical. How's the knee?
Li Ann: Crutches for a week.
Director: All right, could you hobble over to the fashion show? I've reserved a special
         handicapped suite for you at the Century Court hotel.
Li Ann: I can live with that.
Director: And, Victor... Victor, I've got something a little less physical for you, too, since
         you're recovering from being... shot by a clown.
Victor: It's just stitches. It's no big deal.
Director: Oh, I know, but I'm sure there are psychological scars. I mean, I know I'd have them
         if I'd been shot by a clown.
Mac: [ snickering ]
Victor: So, what do I do?
Director: This is a photo of Chantelle at a recent fashion show.
Victor: Oh, great, Mac gets a model, and I get a picture of a model.
Director: The model doesn't concern me. Run a background check on everybody else in the photo.
Victor: There's 100 people in this picture.
Director: Any one of them could be our clowns. Blow up the photo and, uh, find out what they
         look like in clown make-up.
Victor: What do you know about this cop case?
Director: You're not a cop any more, Victor. This should not concern you.
Li Ann: Vic, I know what your cop buddies did. And whatever happens to them, they deserve it.
Mac: What do you think she meant by "Stumpy"?
Li Ann: Waaa! [makes chopping motion]

[ coughing ]
O'Grady: Hey, Victor.
Victor: Hi.
O'Grady: I thought you were-- Jack with rocks, right?
Victor: Right.
O'Grady: Like an elephant. Coffin nail?
Victor: No, I quit.
O'Grady: Poor Andy, uh?
Victor: Bad business.
O'Grady: To old times.

[flashback]
Victor: You see the look on that guy's face, man, when he ran away from the car. It's like he
        didn't even know we were cops. [Guy walks away.] Nice talking to you.
[ laughing ]
Stan: Hey, look, all I'm saying is you live with cops, you die with cops.
Victor: Not exactly comforting.
Stan: We're the best you got. So, what do you think, Vic? Good squad? Good as I promised?
Victor: Yeah, nah, it's... I wouldn't mind getting in on things more. You know what I mean?
Stan: You made a great name for yourself in Vice. Things are a little different in narcotics.
      You gotta work your way up.
Victor: I know, I know. I just want to thank you.
Stan: Hey, like, this since the academy -- you're a good cop. I'm happy to have you.
Victor: Isn't that that dealer? What's his name, Chas? What's McDowell doing talking to pond
        scum likethat?
Stan: Don't worry about it.
Victor: The guy's a major dealer. He sells to kids. He should be behind bars, not in one.
Stan: Vic, don't worry about it. Joe's boss. He knows what he's doing.
Joe: I got a toast here. Rowrrr. Listen up. To the sorriest bunch of S.O.B.'s I've ever had the
     misfortune of working with. Good bust today.
Victor: Oh. Hey, what are you doing talking to that dealer over there?
Joe: It's none of your business. Hey, come on, sweetheart.[grabs the waitress]
Waitress: Ahhh! [Victor pulls them apart]
Victor: Come on, come on, come on, come on. Sorry, he's had a little too much.

[present time]
Li Ann: You all right?
Mac: Oh, yeah... it's like, why didn't the Director let that girl go with you? She's testing
     me. She wants to see if I'll bite. She's, like, dangling the carrot. Rowrr!
Li Ann: You have a very sophisticated view of women.
Mac: I don't want anyone calling me Stumpy, Li Ann.
Li Ann: That's true.
[ knocking. Li Ann opens the door. ]
Li Ann: Hi, you must be Chantelle.
Chantelle: To my friends. You can call me "Miss Endemio."
Li Ann: You can call me "out of here." Before I go, let me introduce you two crazy kids -- this
        is Chantelle. Chantelle, this is... Stumpy. Nice fur. [walks out]
Chantelle: Stumpy?
Mac: It's an old family name.

[flashback]
[ banging. Victor is beating up Chas. ]
Victor: Get up.
Stan: Ok, that's enough.
Victor: You kidding? I could do this for days. I'll miss my gym class.
Chas: I told you, I don't know.
Victor: And I told you, I want the heroin.
Stan: Vic, you're out of line here.
Victor: Where, where is it?
Stan: Ease up already.
Chas: Who does this guy think he is?
Victor: I'm a cop. Where is the heroin?
Chas: Why are you asking me? I told your boss.
Victor: You told McDowell?
Chas: Ha, no, Police Chief Wigam. Of course I told McDowell. Why? Didn't he tell you?

Stan: Don't. Hi, Vic. Long time no see.

Victor: What, are you going to shoot me?
Stan: They arrested Andy.
Victor: Yeah. You next?
Stan: When did you get out of jail? Let's try this. How did you get out of jail?
Victor: You going to do it or play 20 questions?
Stan: I got to know if you've been talking, Vic. 'Cause if anybody comes sniffing around, you
      know nothing, right?
Victor: So I'm the one who ends up getting screwed.
Stan: Hey, Vic, I didn't screw you. It was McDowell's deal, not mine. I'm just a soldier. But
      I'll tell you this, one friend to another, you got to keep your mouth shut about this,
      ok? Like you should have done in the first place.

[flashback]

Victor: You know what I can't figure? So where does that leave us?
Stan: Huh?
Victor: He's got a whole load of heroin; he's not telling anybody.
Stan: look, he knows who's holding the stuff, but he's not bent. They didn't want me to tell
      you, but uh, you're walking right in the middle of it, Vic. There's supposed to be a big
      deal going down, like a half a ton or something. Joe wants to sit tight until the deal
     goes down. This isn't a line, all right? You want to think it is, that's fine. But lesson
     one about being a cop is trusting your partner. Right?

[present time]
Victor: it's too bad we never got to lesson two.
Stan: What's that?
Victor: Watch your back. Don't you know that if I knew that you guys were bent, I would have transferred out. I wouldn't
          have ratted out the team. Stan.
Stan: Watch your back.
 

Mac: [ groaning ]
Chantelle: I've had enough.
Mac: What are you doing?
Chantelle: Going out.
Mac: Ah, no, you're not.
Chantelle: This is boring.
Mac: I know, but it's my job; I must do it -- stay.
Chantelle: Then give me a reason to stay. [kisses Mac]
[flashback]
Li Ann: Waaa! [makes chopping motion]
[present time. Mac pushes Chantelle away.]
Chantelle: What are you doing?
Mac: I'm not doing anything. Why?
Chantelle: He wouldn't actually do that, you know.
Mac: Who, what?
Chantelle: My boyfriend, he wouldn't actually stump you. He just talks like that.
Mac: Ok, I'm just going to make sure, ok? Thanks.
Chantelle: Can I have some water?
Mac: Get me some, too.
Chantelle: So, look... are we going to go out or what? [puts sleeping powder in bottle.]
Mac: Someone's trying to kill you...no!
Chantelle: If they get me, they get me.
Mac: Not if I can help it. Hit me. [Chantelle passes bottle to Mac]
Chatnelle: Enjoy.

Clown #1: How can they call this fashion?
Clown #2: All these poor dead animals.
Clown #1: Don't worry. They'll pay.
Clown #2: So... Chantelle at the hotel? Hey, that kind of rhymes, uh?
Clown #1: No, it doesn't. It's just a homonym.
Clown #2: It's not a homonym -- a homonym for "Chantelle" is "Chantelle."
Clown #1: Are you really going to skin her?
Clown #2: Like she was a sable.
Clown #1: Don't say that. Don't even joke about it.
Clown #2: Relax, relax, relax. We're going to make her feel the pain of the mink.
Clown #1: The pain of the slain.
Clown #2: Ah, now that's a rhyme.
Clown #1: The pain of the slain... the pain of the slain...

Chantelle: Sleep tight, sweetie. [chains Mac to the bed and leaves.]

[flashback]
Stan: I'm telling you, Vic, if you do this, you're working outside the squad. They're not going to know.
Victor: The guy's got drugs, Stan. I gotta go after him.
Stan: I know you do. I got you covered, all right? Hey, Vic, it's your big chance.
Victor: Yeah.
Stan: Vic, watch your back.
Victor: Yeah. [walks into building]
[ cat meowing. A black cat crosses his path]
[ cat meowing. Up the stairs, the black cat crosses hispath again.]
Victor: Shhh. Stan, Stan, what's your 20? Come on, Stan.
[ revolver clicking ]
Victor: Ok. All right. It's ok, easy.
Chas: Hey, it's the cop that missed gym class.
Drug Dealer: Should have minded your own business, rookie. [beats Victor up.]
[ laughing ]
Victor: My back, my back. [kicks out with foot.] Freeze, police. [ gunshots ] Drop it! Drop it.

Stan: Hey, Bobby, the way you've been carrying on this weekend, I figured you'd be taking the day off.
Victor: You set me up!
Stan: What are you talking about?
Officer: Get your hands off him.
Victor: Don't touch me. It's because I knew, right? That's why you did it.
Stan: I don't know what you're talking about.
Victor: Where was my backup? I called you.
Stan: I was on channel 2.
Victor: We always use 1, you know it.
Stan: You're so wrong.
Victor: You wanted those bastards to kill me.
Stan: Stop talking crap.
William: Detective Mansfield, William Burns, Internal Affairs. Can I have a word, please? Is this your locker? Is this your
           locker?
Victor: Yes, yes.
William: Will you open it up, please? Will you open it up, please? [Victor opens locker, William finds heroine in it.]
Victor: It's...that's not mine.
William: Is this your locker?
Victor: That is not mine!
William: Can I have your gun and badge?
Victor: What is going on here?
William: Can I have your badge, please? Two dead dealers and a key of smack in your locker. You tell me. Can I have the
             badge, please?
Victor: This is a setup.
William: Let's go, go, come on, now.
Victor: Get your hands off me. Ahhh! I didn't do anything!

[Director walks in. Sees Mac tied up on the bed.]
Director: [ sighing ] Excellent work.
Mac: Yeah, just getting a little rest. Whew!
Director: This is not good. In fact, this is very, very bad. [unlocks Mac.]
Mac: Why do I get the feeling maybe you've done this before?
Director: Mac, stop obsessing about my personal life. You've got to find Chantelle. Unless, of course, you like being called
             Stumpy.
Mac: I don't know why you think you can come into my apartment and threaten me just any time that you want.
Director: Mac, nothing you own is yours. Everything you own belongs to us. Whether it's your clothes or your life, the agency
             owns all of you.
Mac: You never really get tired of saying that, do you?
Director: No, no, I don't.

[flashback]
[ buzzing ]
Director: Wakey, wakey.
Victor: You my lawyer?
Director: I'm your salvation.
Victor: Leave me alone.
Director: One question, Victor Mansfield. You want to get out of here?
Victor: No, I was thinking maybe I'd stay here forever, you know. Settle down, find a boyfriend.
Director: I'll ask you again. You want out or not?
Victor: No, beat it.
Director: Ok.
Victor: Wait. You could get me out of here?
Director: If you behave. Now, here's the part where I tell you what the catch is. You were never a policeman. You are not
             now a policeman, and you will never be a policeman again.
Victor: All I ever wanted to be was a cop. It's all I can be.
Director: Yeah, except it hasn't turned out so well, has it? So, suppose I offer you a new career.
Victor: What are you, a vocations councellor?
Director: I'm your last chance. Your only ticket out of here.
Victor: You can spring me?
Director: I can offer you a new life, in law enforcement, working for me.
Victor: And I'd be free?
Director: No, you'd be working for me. There's a difference. So, what's your answer? Yes? No? Yes?
Victor: Wait... don't I get any time to think?
Director: I wouldn't want to set a precedent.
Victor: How bad could it be, huh?
Director: Let's not go there. So, this nice man will give you all the details. And a two-month training course.
Dobrinsky: How you doing, Ace?
Victor: Did I make the right move?
Dobrinsky: I don't know. How good's the food in here?
 

Stan: I don't think Victor's been doing the talking.
Joe: Why do you say that?
Stan: Gave me his word.
Joe: Stan... I.A. found a key of heroin in Victor's locker -- a key I put there. He went up for 20, and
       now he's out and walking around. Now, why do you think that is? I'll tell you why it is: he's ratting us out.
Stan: Why would he talk now?
Joe: Maybe he's having a hard time sitting down. All I know is, Andy's been busted, Victor's got a serious grudge, and a big
       mouth. I want it shut.
Stan: Look, Joe, he was my buddy. I don't want to kill him. For what? We did two million on that deal, with squat to show.
Joe: Squat? How did you pay your mortgage? Oh, yeah, I remember. The China White Trust Company. Face facts. There's
       one man, and one man only, who can link us to the heroin... Victor Mansfield.
Stan: Well, I'm not going to whack him unless I know for sure.
Joe: You got 24 hours to get that way.
Stan: Hey, Joe. We used to be cops.
Joe: Yeah...and I used to play point on the powerplay. Pretty good, too. But everything changes.

Director: See the way it works, Vic? I call you... not vice versa. [practises punches with Dobrinsky]
Victor: I want to know what's going on with this heroin case.
Director: It's not your business.
Victor: I lost a chance at the only life I ever wanted, that is my business.
Director: I gave you a second chance, now leave it alone.
Victor: I left it alone -- for five years, and they know that I'm out and they think I'm ratting on them.
Director: Well, that must be an uncomfortable position. [accidentally punches Dobrinsky in the face ] Sorry.
Dobrinsky: No, you're not.
Victor: You can't help me?
Director: No. What do you want?
Victor: I want to know what's going on. I want to know who's fingering them. And I need to know if Stan Shea's one of the
          dirty ones.
Director: Vic, do your job, ok? And maybe I'll tell you.
[Victor leaves]
Director: So, what do you think?
Dobrinsky: I think you're telegraphing your jab. Start that uppercut lower. Keep your right hand higher.
Director: I was asking you whether you think I should tell him or not. Should I be a good girl, or a bad girl?
Dobrinsky: Why not go against type for a change?
Director: Fine -- now, why don't you tell me what you...mean...by...that?

Clown #1: Mad.
Clown #2: The pain of the slain. Indeed.

Misty: You've got to be really careful.
Chantelle: I know, but they're not serious.
Mac: It's me, Stumpy. [drags Chantelle away]
Misty: [takes gun out] All right, motherhumper, let her go.
Mac: Excuse me?
Misty: I'll blow those fat lips right off your face,now, let her go.
Mac: Are you with the agency?
Misty: Yeah, I'm with the Eldon Reddick agency.
Chantelle: She's just my friend.
Misty: Who are you with?
Mac: Actually, I'm between agents right now.
Misty: So, you're pissed off because your career's stalled? That's no reason to kill Chantelle. Step away from her.
Mac: You want to help me out here?
Chantelle: Why should I?
Mac: Because I don't like having guns pointed at me and I may have to shoot her. [aims gun at Misty]
Chantelle: It's ok, Misty. He's my bodyguard.
Misty: Oh... you mean like, like Kevin Costner? You're sexy fine, for a bodyguard.
Mac: Pretty smoky with that pistol. Where is it kept?
Chantelle: All right, all right. I saw him first. So, are we going or what?
Mac: Yeah, get in that car, before I blow those seven figure lips off.
Chantelle: You going to carry my bags?
Misty: Bye, Kevin.

William: Hello, Mansfield. I thought I'd put you away.
Victor: You thought a lot of things... none of them were right.
William: I know a bent cop when I see one, and I seeone.
Victor: You wouldn't know the truth if it smacked you in the head.
William: Mansfield. I don't know how you got out of prison, but I'm going to get you, you and your buddies, you just wait.
Stan: Snitch.
[ tires squealing  Car hits Victor.]
Victor: Ahh... [gets up] Did anybody see a plate? Anybody get a plate!

Li Ann: I'm really worried about Vic.
Mac: Join the club. I've been worried about him for years.
Li Ann: Yeah, but this stuff with his old cop buddies... I mean, it really affects him.
Mac: Look, I'm not in the habit of praising Vic, right? I mean, you know that, but... he's strong. He can handle it.
Li Ann: Yeah, you're strong, I'm strong, but it doesn't help us to deal with our past.
Mac: What does this have to do with the Tangs?
Li Ann: Well, I mean, it's the same for him. It's who he was, how he got here. I just wish there was something we could do to
            help him.
Mac: Yeah, Li Ann, if it's anything like the Tangs, then you know as well as I do, there's nothing anybody can do. He's got to
         sort it out himself.
Li Ann: I know.

[ knocking ]
[Victor opens door and throws the Director on the floor.]
Director: Jeez, Victor, you should have told me you like the rough stuff. I would have dressed appropriately.
Victor: What are you doing here?
Director: I've decided to be a good girl and go against my instincts. I'm going to tell you who's giving evidence against your old
              friends.
Victor: You could do me a big favour and just tell my friends.
Director: Back in '91, when you were arrested, one of the dealers got away.
Victor: Yeah, but he wouldn't--
Director: Yeah, sure he would. Praise the lord, he's been born again.
Victor: You're kidding.
Director: No, apparently, he's found God... in the form of a TV preacher with some hair helmet. Anyway, seems that his
             Creator has directed him to give evidence.
Victor: Can that be made known?
Director: He's been guaranteed complete anonymity. Now, the authorities are not smiling openly, but they're not unhappy that
              Stan Shea found you. You've become the perfect decoy.
Victor: Is Stan dirty?
Director: I didn't concern myself with the finer points.
Victor: And the agency can't do anything?
Director: It's our policy not to get involved with the local police business.
Victor: Even if I get killed?
Director: Look, Vic, I'm not out of sympathy with you. But this is, after all, the kind of thing you've been trained for, right? But,
              uh, just sleep with the light on for a while, ok?

[Two clowns in mime costume come out of elevator.]
Clown #1: You know, Mutt, mime is my favourite costume.
Clown #2: Shh.
[cut to scene inside apartment. Chantelle walks out towards Mac.]
Mac: Oh, my... ha, ha...took you long enough. [Chantelle starts kissing Mac]
Mac: Not going to happen, not going to happen. Look, I'm protecting you. That's it, ok?
Chantelle: Don't worry, I've got the protection covered.
[ scratching ]
Mac: [notices sound] Shh.
Chantelle: Not my fault I have a male attitude--
Mac: Shh. [turns down lights and investigates the place. Suddenly turns on music and startles the clowns]
[ music ] [Mac and The Clowns fight.]
[ kung fu movie music ] [The Fight changes to Kung FuStyle]
[ playing Oh! Canada ] [Everybody freezes in respectto the national anthem.]
[ Toreador song from Carmen ] [Fighting resumes.]

Joe: Oh, oh... so, it's him.
Stan: It's him -- I saw him talking with Burns from I.A.
Joe: There's a lesson here, isn't there, Stan? Never doubt your commanding officer. You hear they busted Kenny today?
Stan: Let's bolt.
Joe: Keep your pants on. Doesn't matter who Victor rats out if he's not around to testify. Do him tonight.
 

[ pounding ]
Stan: Vic, you got to let me in. You got to.
Victor: Stan, no!
Stan: They're after me, man. I'm begging you, please! Come on, man!
Victor: What do you want?
Stan: They think you're the snitch. They sent me to kill you. I told them no.
Victor: Is this where I'm supposed to thank you?
Stan: Huh? We're going down, man, the whole squad. Me and you, we can go to the cops.
Victor: I don't need to.
Stan: This was Joe's idea. It was always Joe's idea.
Victor: Is that why you ratted me out, huh!
Stan: There was nothing I could do, Victor! Me and you, we can clear our names.
Victor: Maybe I don't need to. Maybe that's why I'm out of jail.
Stan: Well, then you got to speak for me, we're friends.
Victor: Ha, ha... we were friends. What happened to you,Stan? You were a good cop.
Stan: I could have blown your head off the first time I was in here... but I didn't. That should count for something.
Victor: Yeah, it does...it does. Just not enough. Are you sure you want to come clean?
Stan: Yeah, I do.  [Victor lowers gun aimed at Stan.Stan kicks Victor to the floor and aims gun at him.]
Stan: That was always the problem with you, Victor. Just a sucker for a sad story.

Mac: You going to take them seriously now?
Chantelle: As much as I can. So, uh...we have a bit of time now.
Director: [walks in] Oh, no, you don't. You and Li Ann must go to Victor's right away. Some of his old cop friends are
             planning a little reunion. It's time they met some of his new friends.
Li Ann: Victor's not working alone any more.

Victor: Ahh...you a junkie now?
Stan: No.
Victor: Just a dealer, then?
Stan: Shut up, all right. You should have stayed away from Chas. You should have followed Joe's orders -- he was your C.O.
Victor: Show me your badge.
Stan: What?
Victor: You heard me. Show me your damn badge. How much you get out of this, Stan? Enough to sell out your badge?
Stan: Maybe we could do that thing I said before. You and me, we could go to the cops. You'd tell them I wasn't involved --
         you'd do that, wouldn't you?
Victor: Yeah...sure.
Stan: Good.
[ gunshot ]
Joe: Didn't think he had the cojones for it. Pick him up, Mansfield.
Victor: Do it yourself.
Joe: I'd never get the blood stains out. You know what this jacket cost? Pick him up...now.

Victor: Ohh.. [Joe beats him up.] [ groaning ]
Joe: O'Grady... get me a drink. Should have stayed out of this one from the get-go, Victor. Never told Chas about that
       smack.
Victor: I was a cop. I was doing my job.
Joe: Mr. True Blue.
Victor: How's it feel, huh? You living off junk?
Joe: Better than 40 grand a year.
Victor: Too bad it's over.
Joe: Ha, ha, it ain't over, Vic.
[ cocking pistol ]
Joe: One bullet in the head and there's no case.
Victor: If I was the leak, but I'm not.
Joe: Don't be pathetic.
Mac: [walks in with Li Ann] Ha, ha, I've only known you for five minutes, you're my best friend. Bartender! A drink. Oh...oh.
         I'm sorry. You want to go somewhere else?
Joe: Turn around and walk out of here.

Joe: [aims gun at Victor's head] Who the hell are you?
Li Ann: His friends.
Joe: You came to say goodbye. Well, goodbye. [Victor jabs Joe in the stomach and starts hitting him and kicking him.]
Victor: [spots O'Grady trying to escape] O'Grady... don't. There was a time that I would have... I would have died for these
          guys.
Mac: Yeah, like a minute ago.
Victor: My friend Stan is in the trunk of the Impala outside. Think you could take O'Grady with you while you're at it?
Li Ann: What are you going to do?
Victor: I'm just going to hang out-- I'm... I'm just going to hang out for a minute. Thank you.

[ laughing ] [Murphy enters arm in arm with Chantelle]
Mac: Murphy? That's your boyfriend?
Murphy: No, not at all. I was, um-- merely...escorting the young lady to, uh... you, uh, won't tell Mr. Camier, will you?
Mac: Oh, yeah, I will.
Director: All right, Murphy, leave the young woman outside. This is between you and me.
