He stays the night and is promised that he will be taken where he can contact Voyager. He becomes friends with several of the Vori's, and is dressed in their "colors" so that he will not attract the attention of the "Nemesis", the Kradins, whom the Vori's are at war with.
He learns of the Kradin's inhumanity to the local people and is forced to defend himself when attacked by the Kradin. He escapes to a nearby village after the rest of the Vori squad is killed, the villages take him in and tend his wounds. He is befriended by 11 year old Karia and her aged grandfather, Penno.
Chakotay leaves the village in search of headquarters, only to return when he see fighter vessels heading towards the village. Upon his arrival he witnesses the villagers being beaten and driven away to labor camps. He is made a prisoner, staked to the ground and left to die. Brone finds him and releases him.
