Synopsis (without Spoilers)

A wealthy newcomer, Kelley [Chris Klein], and a local townie, Jasper [Josh Hartnett] meet randomly, as they get into a car race that results in the destruction of a local diner. The two are then forced to pay off their debts by working together at the restaurant. Things get complicated when they they both fall for the same girl, a local girl from the "wrong side of the tracks," Samantha [Leelee Sobieski].

Kelley is forced to decide between a future of Ivy Leagues and wealth, mapped out by his father, and one that he never expected, with Samantha. (Oh, by the way, Samantha happens to have a terminal illness, which just complicates things further. ^_^)

Reviews(with Spoilers)
Coming into this movie, I was expecting a lot. There had been a lot of publicity about it, especially in magazines. It sounded like a good movie, with lots of potential. However, during the movie, I found myself expecting upcoming scenes, and unaffected by what was supposed to be a "touching" moment.

This movie had a lot of potential, but somehow did not play out correctly. The actors were all sincere; I think the main problem was the story though. It was one that is told best in the classic romance stories, like Romeo and Juliet, or Casablanca. To try to imitate these stories is just a waste of time, and that was what Here on Earth basically was. There was some sort of point the story was trying to get across (something about freedom in the midst of society's pressures), however it was sadly lost amongst other unnecessary and unsuccessful attempts to invoke interest.

All in all, the movie was a disappointment. As I mentioned before, the actors played up their parts as well as they could. Chris Klein and Josh Hartnett were sensitive and believable, as was Leelee Sobieski. If you like any of these actors, Here on Earth is standable, since their performances were excellent as expected. However spectacular the actor though, he/she cannot save a bad storyline. Even though I still try to recommend it with my some regards ("...it wasn't bad..."), I still must say that it wasn't a success.

Grade: 3 out of 10 cowspots
