The Compromise

The Countess was going over one of the many lists she had written
of things to do for the wedding. The guest list looked more like a
book. Mila had tried to explain that she wanted a small, simple wedding,
but Valaira wouldn't hear of it. The list now had more than a thousand
names. Her phone rang and she answered.
COUNTESS: Yes, hello?
MARGARET: Hello Valaira, it's Margaret.
COUNTESS: Muffy, how nice of you to call.
MARGARET: I wouldn't actually say this is a social call. Would you
mind if I came over? There is something I need to talk to you about.
COUNTESS: It sounds serious?
MARGARET: It could be.

Margaret and Valaira were having tea on the lanai of the
Rosnovsky mansion.
COUNTESS: So, what is so dire?
MARGARET: It's about your daughter's wedding.
COUNTESS: It is definitely going to be a social event of the decade.
MARGARET: That's just it. Mila doesn't want that.
COUNTESS: Of course she does.
MARGARET: No Val. She doesn't. She was almost in tears at Sydney's
last night.
COUNTESS: I don't understand.
Margaret took a sip of her tea.
MARGARET: If you continue to plan this wedding the way you want it, your
daughter won't be there.
COUNTESS: That's ridiculous. Where else would she be? It's her wedding
day.
MARGARET: She'll still get married, but she and Grant will do it in Las
Vegas without you.
Valaira stood and began to pace.
COUNTESS: I just want the best for my Mila.
MARGARET: I know you do, but this is her wedding. Let her have what
she wants. Afterwards, once things have settled, throw a party and
invite whomever you wish.
COUNTESS: If she plans it, what do I do?
MARGARET: You'll help her. But you do what she wants, not what you
want.
Valaira sat back down.
COUNTESS: I'm not sure if I can do that.
MARGARET: If you don't, you're going to lose your daughter again.

The next morning, Mila was trying to sleep in, but was awakened
by a knock on the door. Mila grabbed Grant's black t-shirt that was
lying on the foot of the bed and put it on. When she opened the door,
she was surprised to see her mother.
MILA: Momma? What are you doing here?
Valaira looked at her daughter and shook her head.
COUNTESS: I apologize for coming here this early, but I didn't sleep
well last night.
Mila looked concerned.
MILA: Are you okay?
She pulled her mother into the apartment and closed the door.
COUNTESS: I'm fine my darling angel. I was up all night trying to
figure out a way to apologize to you.
MILA: Why? What did you do?
The countess walked over to the couch and sat down.
COUNTESS: I didn't listen to you. You want a small wedding with family
and close friends and I was planning an event bigger than any royal
wedding.
MILA: You were a little
COUNTESS: Out of control?
MILA: Yes.
Mila put her head on her mother's shoulder.
COUNTESS: Well, no more. I fired Diane. I told her that you decided
to go in another direction.
MILA: Did she cry?
COUNTESS: Yes.
MILA: Good. I didn't like her.
Valaira kissed the top of her head.
COUNTESS: You plan whatever you want and send me the bills.
MILA: Momma, I still want your help. I haven't picked out a design for
my dress yet.
COUNTESS: Well, what would you say about a trip to New York? Next week
is a huge bridal show.
MILA: I think that I love you Momma.
COUNTESS: I love you too baby.
