Everybody Wants To Rule the World Chapter Five Written By: LadySwan "Augh! Where am I?" JT groaned, as he woked up groggily. He looked around at his surroundings, but nothing looked familiar, except for Neil who was sitting in a corner. "Good morning JT, or should I say it's a not so good morning." Neil replied in an depressed voice. And then JT remembered where they were and why they were there. They were captured by the bad guys, the guys who were invloved with Barek, and it was all because he and Neil had messed up big time with illegal stuff that they were after. "Why're you up so early?" JT asked, he looked out the tiny window. They could barely see the sun. "I couldn't sleep." Neil told him, his head hung low. "I was up all night, wondering if I'd ever see my family again. The ones I love." The ones I love. Neil's words echoed in JT's mind. Glory. : : : : : : : : "That was so amazing, Trevor!" Mila laughed in a flirty tone. She grinned at the tall and handsome Senior. She hung from his left arm, as they walked out the school grounds heading towards the Rosnovsky mansion. Trevor grinned arrogantly. "I know. I was pretty amazed myself at how strong my arm had gotten to throw the football that far." "I don't think it's so hard to believe," Mila said, batting her eyelashes. And then they laughed again. Mila was barely listening to Trevor's 'amazing' stories of himself, she was concentrating more on how well they looked together. Mila was so excited. Trevor Jones, a Senior, and also the captain of the football team was walking her home! As they walked down the streets, Mila could see a few girls she saw in school, though she did not know them by name, Mila saw as they watched her enviously. Mila wasn't a flirty girl by nature, and even though she wasn't THAT interested in the guys she had been flirting with lately, when she had first taken a step into Swans Crossing High last Monday, she knew everything was going to be different. Over the summer, she and Garrett had gone through some tough times, but they had stuck to each other through all that. But when Mila first entered Swans Crossing High, without Garrett, it wasn't like summer. There were so much more people. There was peer pressure, and social climbing. In the summer, Mila had the core group. Now, she still had them, plus the cheerleaders, and all the guys who drooled over her. Mila knew she wouldn't fit in, unless she, like every other girl in the popular crowd, flirted. Sydney wasn't around much for her to tell her these things, so Mila had to rely on her cheerleader friends. Going back to the core group, Mila began to wonder why things had changed so largely since summer. JT and Neil were missing, Garrett was in France, Callie and Jimmy were so absorbed in finding JT and Neil, Mila rarely saw them. Sandy was gone from the band, and Mila began to get the feeling Sandy disliked her. Glory was almost always with Sandy, so Mila couldn't just talk to Glory whenever she needed to. Saja, he and Sandy were also getting pretty close, so Mila crossed him off her list. Nancy, Mila couldn't even remember the last time she had seen Nancy. They only had one class together and it was only on a Friday. Mila had skipped cheerleading practice a few times, and ate lunch a few times with some guys she had met. Sydney had been pretty busy lately. Sometimes she and Callie had a meeting for the school newspaper, and had to run off suddenly. Sydney seemed to be so busy, Mila wondered why she was so dedicated to the newspaper. And then Owen- 'Oh no!' Mila thought to herself. I was supposed to meet him at his house for practice! Mila glanced frantically at her watch. And she was already five minutes late! As they stepped up the front steps of the Rosnovsky mansion, Trevor took a deep breath. He had been going on and on about him and his amazing football stories. "Thanks for walking me home, Trevor." Mila said shyly. "Why don't I come in? You can give me the grand tour." He suggested coyly. Mila thought fast. "I'd love to, but you see, I just remembered that Mama and I were supposed to go out to dinner in Newport. And you know, I still have to get ready, and you know how long it takes to get to Newport and all, and..." Mila trailed off, realizing she was blabbering. Trevor just grinned. "That's ok. See you around." He leaned down and kissed her on the lips. Mila's heart raced. She couldn't believe Trevor was actually kissing her. The other girls would be green! She smiled at him. "Bye!" Mila watched as Trevor walked away. And then she turned around and skipped inside the mansion. Meanwhile, outside the Rosnovsky property, passing the house slowly on the road was a red Mercedes. Sydney, who had instructed Ralph to drive slowly after seeing Mila with Trevor, had seen the kiss that took place between them. "I can't believe it," Sydney said shocked. "Ms. Sydney, could we go a bit faster now?" Ralph asked from the front seat. Sydney snapped out of it. "Yes, of course, Ralph. To the house." she instructed him. She leaned back down in her seat and remebered what she had seen just outside the door to the Rosnovsky mansion. "He's going to be so crushed." Sydney said, shaking her head. : : : : : : : : "You know, I don't even know why we're here." Glory said, beginning to sound cranky, as she and Sandy searched the grounds of the Walker Estate. "Because, you were worried about JT and had a feeling he might be here." Sandy said patiently. They had been searching the grounds for an hour or so, and obviously they hadn't found either of the two boys, but they had hoped to find a clue as to where they could be, because this had been the original hideout of the Baldies. "Maybe we should just give up." Glory sighed, almost about to break into tears. Sandy came to her side. "We'll stop searching here, today, but we are not giving up, Glory Booth. We will be strong and we will find JT and Neil." she told her friend firmly. Glory looked up at Sandy and smiled. "Thanks Sandy." "What are friends for?" Together, they headed back to their homes, completely unaware that a single Baldie watched them from the bushes. He shook his head grimly and said something into a little black box in a foreign language and then quietly left. : : : : : : : : Sydney was sitting in front of her desk again, a pad and a pen in front of her, thinking about what to write to Garrett. She didn't want to hurt his feelings, so the first thing she wrote in her letter was a positive response to his letter. 'Thanks for your letter, you wouldn't believe how weird things are around here,' Sydney wrote, ending the first part of the letter. She paused and bit the tip of her pen. What should she write about next? Mila or the birth certificate? She could mix in the bed news in the middle, or save it for last. Either way Garrett would get angry and hurt. Sydney thought about it nervously for a few minutes, until she finally continued writting. 'I received my real birth certificate yesterday," she wrote. 'I had Callie search for it a while back, when... you remember. I'm glad I know that I am Sydney Rutledge, I just wish I knew why you lied. I know I was partly to blame for the whole mess that happened over the summer, but why did you still lie? When you tore it up, you didn't tell me the truth, Garrett. I'm not anymore mad at you, Garrett, just hurt.' Sydney stared at the writing on the paper. She briefly thought about crumpling up the paper, knowing that Garrett would get angry at what she wrote, even though she hadn't added yet the part about Mila. No, Sydney finally decided, he has to know how I feel. She continued writing about her feelings, and then she finally ended that section with, 'I just need to understand, Garrett, that's all.' She paused again, and took a deep breath. Now she had to write about Mila. But maybe she could just leave it out, and let Garrett find out for himself. No, he'd just get mad at Sydney for lying to him. 'I know this is going to hurt, and I don't want to hurt you, but earlier today, I was riding past the Rosnovsky mansion, and I saw her with Trevor Jones, and he kissed her. I'm sorry Garrett. I know about that promise you made to each other. I just didn't want to let you find out some other way. Ever since Mila became a cheerleader, she's been flirting with a lot of guys. I haven't even talked to her in awhile because of all this work with the newspaper. I'm really sorry, Garrett, just please don't get mad. Remember I'm always here if you need me, to talk to or anything.' With a shaky hand, she signed her signature. She carefully folded up the letter and sealed it in an envelope. She got up from her desk, and sat down in her window seat, the letter in hand, and stared out the window at the Booth house. "I'm so sorry, Garrett." : : : : : : : : Cornelia was sitting down in one of the couches in the Booth living room in the dark. The curtains were closed, but she felt she didn't have the strength to get up and open them. The door opened, and Grant Booth entered, arriving home from work. He was surprised to see his wife just sitting in the living room alone. "Cornelia, what are you doing here alone in the dark?" He walked over and opened the curtains. "Grant, could you please call Glory upstairs in her room, I have something I want to tell you both." Cornelia said, her voice solemn. Confused, Grant nodded slowly. "Ok..." He set aside his briefcase and walked over to the stairs. "Glory! Could you please come down here?" A few seconds later, Glory came trotting down the stairs. "What's up?" she asked in a somewhat tired voice. "Sit down, both of you." Cornelia told her husband and daughter, pointing to the couch opposite hers. Uncertainly, they both sat down, exchanging confused looks. "I suppose your both wondering what this is all about. Well, I had a talk with my doctor today..." As Cornelia paused, Grant and Glory looked at each other worriedly. What was this all about? Cornelia took a deep breath. "Grant, Glory, I have a very bad kidney disease. The doctor says I can only get better if I find a good kidney for me, which is rare. In the meantime, well, I'm very very sick." Glory gasped, as Grant stood up on his feet and rushed to her side to embrace her. As Cornelia sobbed onto Grant's shoulders, Glory buried her head in her hands. Why was everything going wrong all of a sudden? Why her? : : : : : : : : Callie waited on her bike by the park for Jimmy to arrive. They were supposed to meet there to discuss what to do about JT and Neil, now that they knew about Barek's involvement. Finally, she could hear Jimmy's motor, and soon enough, he came on his bike in plain view. He stopped shortly next to her. "Are you ok?" she asked him, after he removed his helmet. Jimmy looked like he hadn't gotten a wink all night long. Callie knew how much he had admired Barek since he reminded Jimmy of his older brother. "Yeah. I just didn't get much sleep last night." It wasn't only Jimmy's appearance that made him look different, it was also his facial expression. He had been suspicious of Barek for a while, but he never knew that Barek could kiddnap one of their friends. Jimmy felt almost responsible. By now, the usual crowd had gathered in the park and childrens laughter and shrieks could be heard loudly. "Common, let's go over to the Tool N' Die. We'll get more privacy there." Callie said. They put on their helmets and started their engines and headed over to the Tool N' Die. : : : : : : : : Owen sat behind his drums in his basement, impatiently waiting for Mila to arrive. He glanced down at his watch. She was an hour late. Earlier when he had caught her in the hall, she had promised to be there on time, but it was already five o'clock and she still wasn't there. He decided to play a couple of beats, just to pass time. But as he hit the drums, he could only remember how disappointed he was with Mila, he beat the drums with all his might. The past week had been horrible. Besides school, not mentioning how rough it had been for him, gross teachers and a stupid schedule, his friends, JT and Neil gone, bullies still picking on him in gym class, there were also non-school problems Owen had to deal with. Sandy had left the band last Sunday, the concert was this Monday, and he and Mila had to come up with some new songs just in case Sandy used hers at the concert. And as for Mila, his dream girl had been a nightmare lately. Only recently, now that Sandy was gone did Owen realize Mila didn't exactly have the voice that Sandy did. And Owen had figured, when Garrett left, maybe Mila would notice him, but instead, like any other socialite in Swans Crossing, Mila had begun to play the field. He had seen her numerous times in school, all times with a different guy. And these guys were also upperclassmen, and the guys who bullied Owen from time to time. And it didn't end just there. Owen knew that with the concert on Monday, and Sandy gone, they would have to work extra hard to get what they wanted, but Mila seemed to be skipping a lot of practices, or coming late. She didn't seem to even be minding Owen that much either. Just then, Mila came bounding down the stairs breathless. She looked gorgeous as usual. It made Owen feel a little less mad at her. "Hi. Sorry I'm late." "That's ok." Owen said, smiling a little. "I can only stay for thirty minutes. I have a date tonight." Mila explained. "Thirty minutes? But that's nothing!" Owen practically exploded. "We have to work some more on the other songs for the concert. It is this Monday." he reminded her, beginning to sound impatient. "I know it is." Mila replied, starting to sound impatient herself. "Why do we need new songs? Why don't we just use Sandy's?" "Beacause their Sandy's!" Owen said loudly, stuttering in a way, partly because he couldn't believe he was yelling at Mila. "Look Owen, I'm really really busy. I'm sorry but I'm not a composer, I'm a singer. I'm not Sandy." Owen was outraged. He couldn't believe that this was Mila saying this. It was like she had become everything he didn't like in a girl. "You got that right." he muttered to himself, a little too loudly. Mila stared at him in shock. She fumed a bit and then flounced out the room in rage. Owen banged his head against the drum softly and groaned. This was a disaster! : : : : : : : : Nancy sat alone during cheerleading practice. She looked around the field where her fellow cheerleaders sat. Mila had said something about meeting Trevor and band practice with Owen, and Glory said she was feeling too down about JT. Am I the only who cares about cheerleading here? Nancy asked herself silently, wanting to scream. She looked over to a group of cheerleaders. They were gossiping and giggling. When they saw Nancy looking towards them, they glared at her and turned away. Nancy had never felt this dejected. She felt like there were 10 Sydney's turning her down. Why did I ever try-out for this stupid sport? She asked herself furiously. : : : : : : : : Sandy sat in her room, trying to answer her homework. It was her Music homework, so it should have been a snap for Sandy. But unfortunately, her mind was on other things. Glory had begun to seem so withdraw without JT. And it was the fourth day he had been missing. The police were searching high and low, but still hadn't found anything. Sandy was trying to be a good friend, but helping her get through these tough times, help her try looking, but that wasn't the whole reason Sandy was helping her. Sandy's world seemed to be spinning a lot lately. From time to time, Sandy would look back and wonder why she had quit the band. She couldn't face either Owen or Mila, and so far, she had rarely seen any of them. Luckily, she only had one class with Mila, and that was Biology. She had two classes with Owen though, English and unfortunately Music. But luckily, she also shared both of them with Saja. She wished everything could go back to normal like the way things were before. Before everything started going wrong. But things couldn't change. And then she went back to him. Saja. Her feelings for him had begun to change a lot. She had begun to notice he was more than just a friend. And there was that little chance that he could like her too. It was unlike anything Sandy had ever felt before. But then she was still confused. Did she really like him? Or was she still secretly still in love with Owen? Owen was the first and only guy she had ever really liked. But then he had never thought about her that much in a romantical sense. And then when he started liking Mila, well, was Sandy turning to Saja just because? Sandy moaned and then turned to her calendar on her desk. October 3rd was circled in a big red circle. She remembered why she had encircled it and groaned again. October 3rd was the day of the concert! And Sandy was still supposed to be singing! When Sandy had told Sydney that she had left the band, Sydney had still insisted that she sing, even if separately from Owen and Mila. Sandy had overheard that Owen and Mila were trying to come up with new songs because they couldn't use Sandy's. Sandy smiled. At least they knew they were her songs. But what could she sing? Some of her songs were also Owen's. And she also had to have musical accompanionment. Sandy groaned. Everything was a disaster! If only Saja was there to help her like he had been doing so the past few days. I wonder if he's thinking about me the way I'm thinking about him, Sandy mused. : : : : : : : : Saja was walking home, when he passed by the road leading to Sandy's street. I wonder if she's thinking about me the way I'm thinking about her, he wondered. Lately, Saja had beun to wonder about his relationship with Sandy. Their friendship had begun to grow more than just friendship, but Saja wondered if he was finally over Callie. He had had the longest crush on her, there never seemed to be any girls in Swans Crossing that was crushworthy enough for him, until Callie came along that is. But he knew that she and Jimmy were together, and that they were meant for each other. But now that Sandy was in his life, did he really like her, or was he just using her as a cushion to get over his crush on Callie? Saja shook his head. He knew he wasn't the type to use people, even to get over someone. But still, was he finally over Callie? What if he and Sandy did have a relationship, and all he could think about was Callie? That would leave her heartbroken. He didn't want to hurt Sandy. Saja sighed as he finally reached his house. Wherever this thing between him and Sandy was leading to, he hoped everything would be ok. : : : : : : : : "Jimmy, this is so weird! I always knew Barek was strange, but I didn't think he would actually kiddnap JT and Neil!" Callie exclaimed, worriedly pacing around the Tool N' Die. "Well, actually, we overheard him talking to the people who kiddnapped them. Barek didn't actually kiddnap JT and Neil." Callie shot him a look. "You know what I mean. He's involved with this whole Mamba Jamba thing, he's part of the group whose after JT and Neil!" "I know, Callie, just calm down, let's think this through." Jimmy told her. She stopped pacing and leaned against the counter. "I just can't believe Barek would do something this horrible," Jimmy said, about his ex-role model. "Sometimes things can't be helped." a deep male voice said. Callie and Jimmy turned around startled. It was Barek. He took a step closer to them. "Hello Callie, hello Young James." : : : : : : : : Sydney headed back to school in frustration. She couldn't believe she had forgotten to submit her ideas on the articles for the first edition of the Swans Crossing High Newsletter. Mrs. Dalton ran a tight ship, and if she said everyone had to subit their ideas today, everyone had to. No exceptions, or they would be stuck being assigned to crappy assignments on the team. Ralph parked by the front, as Sydney rushed inside. Hopefully, maybe Mrs. Dalton was still there in the SCH newsroom, about to lock up so that Sydney could still give it to her. If not, there was always the mailbox, but there was also a chance that she wouldn't get it on time. Sydney rushed to the office, surprised to find the door open. She stepped inside. "Mrs. Dalton?" "Mrs. Dalton had gone home already." a muffled voice said from behind the shelves. The person stepped into view. It was David. Sydney froze. "Um, well, could you give this to her for me, I kind of forgot to give it her earlier." she said, handing David the piece of paper. "Will do." he grinned. "Isn't it a bit late for you to be here in school?" "I actually, I already went home, but I just remembered about this, and well, you know Mrs. Dalton, she'll scare the heck out of anyone." "I know." Sydney could see the dimple in David's left cheek. He looked absolutely gorgeous. "So, how come you're here so late?" Sydney asked, trying to make conversation. She flashed him her best smile. "I had to fix a couple of things here." He took a seat down in one of the chairs. "Being editor-in-chief is a lot of hard work." "Well, I'm sure they picked the right person for the job." she told him. David beamed proudly. "I'm glad they picked me for the job." He stood up and took a step closer to Sydney. "I'm even more glad that Mrs. Dalton picked you, too." Sydney blushed. "Thanks." They paused. Hesitantly, Sydney turned towards the door. "Well, I guess I'd better get going..." "Sydney, wait!" "Yeah?" "I know you might think I'm being a little bit too forward, but how would you like to go on a date with me? Let's say this Friday?" Sydney grinned for ear to ear. "I'd love to." David grinned his adorable grin. "Great! See you then!" "Bye!" Sydney waved as she left the room and closed the door behind her. She rushed outside to the car where Ralph was waiting. As Ralph started to drive home, Syndey leaned back in her seat and said, "I think I'm in love." : : : : : : : : "Will we ever get out of here?" JT asked Neil in frustration. He looked over to him best friend. Neil had become so withdrawn, ever since they had been captured. JT sighed. Angrily, he turned towards the wooden door and kicked it. "Let us out!" he shouted hoarsely. He and Neil were rarely given meals, and JT's mouth watered at the thought of even the horrible Mila Floats during her surprise party in the summer. JT tried rattling the door. He could only hear the laugher of the Baldies. He kicked the door one last time. But it was a bit too hard. JT hurt his toe. "Ow!" he complained. He hopped over to Neil. "Common, buddy, help me out here." "It's no use, JT." Neil said in a sort of trance. "We're doomed. They'll get what they want from us and then they'll kill us. We'll never see our friends again." That last sentence was all JT needed to gather up his strength. "Don't talk like that Neil! You've been watching too many movies." he tried joking. Neil only looked at him and then turned away. "Common Buckyball, remember, we're in this together. You're not alone, and neither am I." Neil actually smiled faintly, hearing their promise to each other a while back. "I'm glad we're in this together." They hugged each other and smiled. As long as they were together, nothing would take them apart.
