Mr. and Mrs. Robbins are waiting anxiously for the doctor to tell them
news about their daughter. "Is Nancy going to be okay," Mr. Robbins asks
worriedly.

The doctor sighs, "Your daughter is suffering from alcohol poisoning.
You lucked out though, she's going to live. In the past year I have seen
three different people die from the amount of alcohol Nancy drank last
night. I recommend you enroll Nancy is some type of Detox immediately.
She's going on a downward spiral and you need to help her. We want to
keep her in the hospital for a few days and than she will be released.
Hopefully, to proper help. Good luck, you guys are going to need it." He
walks away solemnly.

"I'm going to call Dr. Atwater, and see if she knows of any centers we
can get Nancy in," Mrs. Robbins says reaching for the tiny address book
she keeps in her purse. "And, a few of her friends too. Nancy might need
their support right now."

JT knocks on the Rosnovsky door nervously. Mila opens it quickly with a
smile but greets the visitor with a sneer, "JT, what brings you here?"

"Your mother didn't tell you!? She invited me to talk, I thought you
would have known."

"Actually, I wasn't aware of this meeting. Mama," Mila yells out.

The Countess walks into the foyer, "JT, your early. You might have
potential after all. Well don't just stand in the doorway, come in, come
in," she ushers JT in. "I have coffee and, tea for you Mila, waiting for
us in the sitting room."

Mila glares at her mother, "Right behind you."

Callie walks into the Tool and Die finding Chase and Jimmy working
quietly while the radio sitting on one of the working benches is blaring
out a No Doubt song. Callie walks over to the radio and turns it down.

Jimmy turns around in surprise, "What," he notices Callie, "Oh, hey."

Chase waves from his position on the floor, "Hi Callie."

Jimmy eyes Callie's clothes, instead of wearing her overalls she is
wearing a tank top and jean shorts, "Why aren't you dressed, you look
like your going to the beach instead of a day in the shop."

"Cause, I am going to the beach. Jimmy, I decided that it wouldn't be in
either of our best interests for me to continue working here. I figured
since Chase is here now, you won't really need me."

Jimmy wipes the sweat of his brow, "No, youre not quitting. I'm not
letting you do that. Your as good as a worker as I am. We are swamped as
it is, I need you this summer."

Callie shakes her head, "No, I made my decision. I'm going to get a job
interning with Dr. Atwater this summer. She kinda created one with me in
mind so I didn't think it would be right for me to turn her down."

"Listen, Callie. If this is about last night, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have
kissed you."

Callie looks down, 'the kiss I haven't been able to get out of my mind,
that incredible kiss' she sighs, "It's okay. Well, I better go. If you do
end up in a jam call me but I can't work here regularly anymore. So I
guess I'll see ya around."

"Youre letting me down Callie. At least give me two weeks notice."

Callie shrugs, "Fine, but I can't full time. I won't be able to come in
till late afternoon cause I told Dr. Atwater I would start helping her in
the morning starting tomorrow."

"Great, thanks. Well I'll see you around."

Callie nods, "Yeah, well I'm off to the pool. Bye Chase."

Sydney walks through the Hospital corridor quietly. She has always hated
hospitals since her father died. Ever since then, she has tried to avoid
ever entering them. 'I don't even know why I'm here, I cant believe I'm
here for Nancy,' she grumbles quietly. Mrs. Robbins had called her about
a half an hour ago and she couldn't bear to say no. Obviously Nancy
hadn't informed her parents that she had managed to stab practically all
her friends in the back and lost all of the in the process, 'But if I'm
not Nancy's friend why am I really here?' To see her suffer a little
voice deep in her says or you really care and want to help.'

Sydney reaches Nancy's room and knocks quietly, "What a voice," barks
out.

Sydney rolls her eyes, "Well, this is going to be real fun." She opens
the door quickly and walks in finding Nancy sitting in her bed staring at
the blank television.

Nancy narrows her eyes at her ex-best friend, "What are you doing here?"

"Hi, to you too," I can handle this, I can get through to her, "Your mom
called me, told me you could use some moral support."

"Support for you, when have you ever lent support to anyone but
yourself."

"Oh, Nancy. Knock the chip off your shoulder already," Sydney says
angrily and sits down at the end of her bed, "We need to talk. And now
is the perfect time."

"I have nothing to say to you."

"Fine, but I have plenty for you to hear. You don't have to talk if you
don't want but you are going to listen."

Nancy smirks at her, "Oooh, this should be thrilling."

"Look at you Nancy. Your in a hospital bed half way to Detox. You did
this to yourself yet I in many ways blame myself. I remember when we
started becoming really partiers. The summer after our junior year. We
went on that camping trip with Sophia and her friends. We felt so
honored that she invited us to hang out with her and her college friends.
I remember that night so carefully. Which is funny considering I got so
drunk I was practically puking stuff out from freshman year. After that
we knew that drinking was bad and did pretty nasty things to our bodies
but every time we went to a party and a drink was offered we always
accepted. It was such a thrill to break a law like that and never ever
get caught. Around that time was the first time Garrett and I slept
together too. After that it was like I couldn't breath without having him
around me so I guess I got so caught up with him that when we went to
parties I never noticed that when I was still nursing my first drink you
were already on your third. Or when I was spending time with Garrett you
were throwing up or making out with some random guy. I should have
noticed that even than you had a problem but the time I did notice it was
too late. You were hooked and turned your back on me as I did you. I'm so
sorry Nancy, I didn't keep our promise. Sisters, don't let each other slip
down hills like that. I'm so sorry" she looks at Nancy for the first time
since she started talking and notices tears starting to fall from here
eyes.

JT sits nervously in the Rosnovsky sitting room drumming his fingers
against their coffee table. The Countess takes a sip of her coffee and
than begins to speak, "Well JT, Mila looks like we have some decisions to
make. Number one, your relationship. Frankly it would be extremely
embarrassing to my family if Mila has this child out of wedlock."

"Mother," Mila gasps, "It's the 90's. It's perfectly accepted to not be
married and have a child nowadays. Besides, I'm not ready to get married,
and certainly not to someone who I don't love," she sends a shooting
glare towards JT's direction.

"And your ready to have a child. Mila, children are a much bigger
responsibility than marriage is. "

JT clears his throat, "I agree with Mila, Mrs. Rosnovsky. I don't think
it would be in our child's best interest if we got married."

Mila turns towards JT, "Did you just say 'our' child?"

"Yeah."

"So, you actually accept this child is yours and agree to take active
participation in it's life."

"Yes, I do. Now, I do."

Mila smiles in relief, "Thank you JT. Knowing that makes things so much
easier."

"Never the less," The Countess interrupts, "how is this child supposed to
have a stable home environment if it's mother lives in Swans Crossing
and father lives in New York City."

"Maybe I can go back to New York," Mila says quietly. "Raise my baby
there. Get an apartment and a part time job. My trust fund is released to
me in September. I'll have enough money to set up a nice home and give me
a steady income."

"More than steady," JT mumbles. Everyone knew that Mila was going to
become a millionaire by the time she was 21 but she was never ever one to
brag about. In fact in the whole time JT had known Mila she had never
once mentioned how much money she really had.

"I don't think that's going to work, Mila. You will raise the baby here.
You are going to need my influence. You have no clue what to do when it
comes to infants."

"It's my child, mother. Besides I have 9 months to learn. I can take
classes at the college on parenting. I love New York, and if I live
there the baby will have more of a chance of having a father in it's
life."

"Well, discuss this matter later."

"No, we don't discuss anything. You don't make my decisions. You can
offer me advice but I always put in the final word," Mila says angrily
shocked at the words that just came out of her mouth.

"Fine," The Countess stands up, "If you think you and JT can handle this
by yourself, handle it. I won't say a word, not a single word. Raise this
baby with a pack of wolves, see if I care. It's your mistake to make."

PART 17:

Nancy lies in her hospital bed and hugs her pillow tightly as Sydney
stares at her with a look of compassion in her eyes. This was the first
time she had seen Nancy show any type of emotion over their lost
friendship.

"You were my best friend since pre-school. I idolized you," Nancy says
softly, "I wanted to be like you. You had everything I wanted and it
seemed like I could never do anything better than you could. You were
always able to one up me. When we were in the fifth grade I had my first
date with Jeremy Winters. We went to a movie and he gave me a good night
kiss on the cheek. You had your first date with Lance O'Brian. You went
out to dinner, and ice-skating and he gave you good night kiss on the
lips. As usual you did better than I did. Every year in high school you
were voted president of the class while I was voted treasurer or
something crummy like homeroom rep. You got to be homecoming queen and
prom queen while I was always voted to be a princess. I could never live
up to you. Until we started partying. I could party better than you. I
always had more fun. And I relished in that fact."

"I always knew you admired me. That's why I loved having you around. It
made me feel important and better than everyone else. You kept my
confidence up. I loved that, but in many ways it was wrong. Because it
held you down. You were never able to become your own person because you
were always trying to be a clone of me. Even though I loved the fact that
you admired me I also resented it because in the back of my mind I was
afraid that one day you would succeed at your goal and finally outdo me."

"You were," Nancy questions with surprise lingering in her voice.

"Yeah, I was. I guess that's one of the reasons why I turned to Callie.
She was her own person, she didn't want to be me. Our friendship wasn't
built on competition."

"I always resented Callie, you know. She always got everything I wanted.
She got Jimmy and she replaced me as your best friend. For that, I
disliked her with every bone in my body."

Sydney brushes her hair out of her face, "Nancy, do you know that you
need help?"

Nancy nods, "Yes, I know."

"Well when you come back, I hope you and I can be friends again. Real
friends though, not how it was before where we were more like competitors
than people that really cared about each other." Sydney holds out her
pinky finger, "Promise."

Nancy holds out her pinky, "Definitely."

Sydney smiles, "I have something else I would like to ask you. Would you
be one of my bridesmaids."

"What," Nancy asks with confusion, "Your getting married."

"Yes," Sydney squeals, "Your the first person I've told. Garrett asked me
to marry him last night and well were going to get married. So will you
do it?"

"If you really want me too."

"I do, don't you remember how when we were little and we planned our
weddings. I took my white lave table cloth and used it as veil and
dressed up in my white "church" dress."

Nancy laughs, "And than we had the mock wedding reception and you spilled
grape juice all over it and you were so worried because your mother had
told you not to use your nice clothes for dress up. "

"So you took your birthday money and bought me a new dress so that I
wouldn't get in trouble," Sydney finishes for her.

"Things were so much simpler when we were younger," Nancy remarks. "So
your really going to marry him. Have you told your parents?"

"The Booths and my mother and I are all having dinner tonight. We are
going to make the announcement than."

"Good Luck."

Sydney smiles gratefully, "Thanks, cause Garrett and I are both going to
need it."

Callie spots Neil at the pool and walks over to him, "Hey buddy," she
takes a seat on the pool chair next to him.

Neil smiles, "Hey, Cal. What's up. Shouldn't you be at work?"

Callie grins sheepishly, "I kinda quit. Didn't your mom tell you I'm
interning at her office this summer."

"Oh yeah. She did mention something about it, but I didn't know you were
gonna quit the

"I know, but I'm on my summer vacation. I'd like some time to just
relax."

"And some time away from Jimmy. It must be hard to have to work side by
side with him day in and day out," Neil says knowingly.

"You got it. Since when have you become so knowledgeable about
relationships of the male/female variety."

Neil blushes, "I'm kinda seeing someone."

"You are, how come you never mentioned her before? Are you holding out on
me?"

Neil smiles, "Well her name is Jolene. She's from Atlanta and simply
brilliant. More so than me, if you can believe it."

Callie laughs, "So tell me more. How old is she? How long have you known
her? Give me details."

"We were lab partners in my organic chemistry class first semester and
she lives down the hall from me in our dorm."

"Cute, Neil. Sounds promising. So will I ever get to meet this brilliant
Jolene?"

Neil nods, "Want to escape this burb this weekend and come with me to
visit her."

Callie smiles, "Sounds good to me, I could use an escape."

"Great, I already know you two are going to get along wonderfully. "

Chase picks up the phone at the Tool and Die dials Mila's number quickly.
"Hello," her voice comes through the receiver.

"Hey Beautiful," rolls off of Chase's tongue.

"Who is this?"

"It's me Chase, from last night."

"I remember, why are you calling me? I had a great time but I am still
sticking to what I said last night. I can't go out with you?"

"I know, I heard you last night but I think I can change your mind."

"Oh you do, what makes you so certain."

"Just give me a chance, Mila. Have dinner with me tonight. Just dinner.
I'll pick you up at 7."

Mila sighs, "And if my decision still stay's the same after dinner you
will accept it."

"If you still feel the same way, I'll deal with it."

"Fine, I'll see you at 7."

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Owen trudges behind his dad slowly as they walk out of the main dining
room at the Country Club. 'What a useless waste of time, that meal was. I
should have never come back. All dad ever does is tell me in so many
words what a loser I have become.'

Callie and Neil are still chatting by the pool when Callie notices Owen
walks slowly past them, "Isn't that Owen?" Callie motions to the skinny
figure in front of them.

Neil squints his eyes, "I think so,....Hey Owen," he yells loudly.

Owen turns around and sees Callie and Neil, "Great," he mutters, as he
makes his way over to the two of them, "Hi guys."

Callie waves, "Hi Owen, when did you get back into town."

"Ahh, last night."

Neil nods, "Cool, so how have you been?"

Owen shrugs, "Same, old, same old. Listen, I gotta go my dad is waiting
for me. I guess I'll see you around."

"Bye," Callie says quietly as Owen walks off, "That was weird. He looks
sick or something."

"Or something. Cal, he's strung out."

"Owen, no way."

"That would explain why he dropped out of school, why he never e-mails
anymore."

"I wonder is Sandy knows, if anyone could help him it would be her."

Neil flashes on last night, as Sandy's voice runs through his head 'I
was in a minor accident, their pain pills,' "Or maybe Sandy's part of
the problem."

"What does that mean?"

Neil shrugs, "Ahh, nothing. You know what your probably right, he's
probably just' sick."

Callie eyes Neil, 'What is he keeping from me? He knows something I
don't.' "Well, I hope so."....... 'Miss. Swan you and I are going to
have to do Lunch one of these days,' she thinks, ' Somethings going on,
and I'm going to find out what it is'
